Dawn Staley shares wisdom and belief in Jalen Hurts

USA Today2 days ago
Dawn Staley recently took some time to remind Jalen Hurts of his greatness.
You wouldn't believe how many texts and emails have been exchanged that mention Dawn Staley, her Philadelphia connection, and the belief that she, as a women's basketball coach, could succeed in a male-dominated industry. Fear not, Nick Sirianni's job as Philadelphia Eagles head coach is safe, but don't be shocked if you hear rumors about the NBA's interest in Coach Staley.
Be honest with yourselves. How many of you believe Dawn would do a worse job than Doc Rivers did at times, or Nick Nurse is doing now? Okay, maybe that's unfair on Nurse's front. There's only so much a man can do when placed in a tunnel with no light at the end. Here's the point.
There is talent in the coaching ranks in women's basketball. Some of the best in the business could make some noise coaching men's athletics, and Dawn is respected enough that she would make anyone listen.
Put a pin in that. We'll revisit later and focus more on why we've gathered today. Did you hear the advice she offered to Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts?
Dawn Staley is Philly born and bred. She's also a die-hard Eagles fan who has befriended Jalen Hurts through their mutual friend, South Carolina Gamecocks and Eagles legend Duce Staley. They have shown public support for each other, and recently, Coach Staley reiterated that support.
Dawn hung out for an episode of Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce. As you might expect, a discussion about the Eagles entered the conversation, one where Coach offered some solid advice for Hurts.
"I know sometimes when you play for a team that's in Philly, and you're the quarterback, and you're the star, it really is a lonely place... He's QB1. We lose, the city goes crazy, so I know it's a lonely place. Sometimes, I text him, 'Hey, don't get too high with the highs or low.' He doesn't... He doesn't now. He's the coolest cat that I know, but sometimes you need to hear that you're the only one who is going to feel the pressure of everybody else, because other people in other positions can just kind of go under the radar, so to speak."
Hurts' run with the Eagles has seen it all: ups and downs, praise and criticism, a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss, and an exhilarating Super Bowl win. Hurts and Staley share a special bond, and she occasionally shoots the quarterback a phone call for support.
"When it's the quarterback, and we know you've got the potential to take us to Super Bowls and win Super Bowls, you really feel the pressure. So, I'm just like 'Hang in there. (I'm) thinking about you. It's Philly, so ride the wave.
And, we rode the wave with him all the way to the Super Bowl, where it wasn't even a question about whether or not we were going to win."
Wow! It's easy to see why she has won three NCAA Division I Tournament championships. We reiterate. We have zero issues with her being the next head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, as long as the leadership there doesn't get in her way and disrupt things.

Are Eagles Learning From Past Post-Super Bowl Mistakes?

Are Eagles Learning From Past Post-Super Bowl Mistakes? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After winning Super Bowl LIX last year, the Philadelphia Eagles are trying to repeat as champions. Sound familiar? Advertisement They have been in this situation before. To accomplish their goal of a repeat championship, there are multiple lessons to learn from the last time they were at this point. When the Eagles first won the Super Bowl in 2017-18, they did - to their credit - most everything they could to get back the following year. That meant giving contract extensions to some of their older stars, such as Nigel Bradham and Alshon Jeffery. It only took a short time to see those well-intentioned moves crumble. Philadelphia was one of the league leaders maybe in injuries due to its older roster at the time, which led to the team collapsing into a regime change just three years following its Super Bowl win. Advertisement What is arguably more remarkable is that the Eagles were able to shrug off that season's failings and build another Super Bowl winner. As they prepare for another title defense, has general manager Howie Roseman and the organization learned from the mistakes they made before? Early returns should tell wondering Eagles fans that they have. Instead of re-signing several of their older stars, Philadelphia has said goodbye to many prominent leaders. Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Brandon Graham are just a few veterans who departed from the organization this offseason. By parting with some of its more critical veterans, Philadelphia is choosing to focus on the growth of its young roster. The Eagles have the 10th-youngest roster in the game. … and that alone is evidence of the team's learning from its past mistakes. Advertisement Time will tell if they can maintain their dominance in 2025 and beyond. … but the change in policy is notable and laudable. What Penn State players are in Matt Miller's mid-summer 2026 mock draft?

Penn State has historically been one of the top college football programs, sending talent off through the NFL draft. The early indications for the 2026 NFL draft suggest the Nittany Lions will be prominent in the draft next spring as well, and a couple of players are projected to be first-round draft picks. ESPN's Matt Miller includes two Penn State players in his first mock draft for 2026 this far out. The first Penn State player off the board, according to Miller would be cornerback A.J. Harris, perhaps a slightly surprising pick off the Nittany Lions' roster. But Harris has the kind of skills NFL teams are searching for in defensive backs, and a good year in the secondary could give Harris a good first-round boost at the right time. Miller has Harris projected to go to the Washington Commanders with the 25th overall pick in the 2026 draft. Penn State has developed a nice reputation for players in the defensive secondary in recent years, and that may have been one of the reasons Harris opted to transfer to Penn State from the SEC when he did. Expect more hype for Harris moving forward. The next Penn State player off the board is one more mock drafts seem to have a little bit higher. That would be quarterback Drew Allar, who some have projected as one for the top quarterbacks off the board. Miller is a tad less optimistic about that being the case with a few passers going ahead of Allar, but a 27th overall pick by the Los Angeles Rams seems like a decent landing spot for Allar. Could Allar end up being the heir apparent to Super Bowl-winning quarterback Matthew Stafford? That seems like a good situation for Allar to be in if that ends up being the case. We will be watching the mock draft progress now until the 2026 draft to see where Allar and Harris (and others) end up being projected by some of the biggest names in the NFL draft community. There is a long way to go, so there could be many changes along the way. You can check out Miller's full mid-summer mock draft for 2026 via ESPN.

Eagles Have Obvious 'Red Flag' Worthy of Major Concern

Eagles Have Obvious 'Red Flag' Worthy of Major Concern originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles have lost several key players on the defensive side of the ball this offseason. Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and Josh Sweat are just some veterans who have departed from the defending Super Bowl champions. Advertisement Now, it's true … Philadelphia still employs plenty of stars on its defense to mitigate those losses. Jalen Carter, Zack Baun, and Quinyon Mitchell are all All-Pro or Pro Bowl-caliber players who should keep the top-ranked 2024 unit among the best in the league in 2025. But that doesn't mean there aren't red flags worthy of concern. CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin shared a column this week that highlighted just how difficult it could be for the Eagles to keep their dominant ways. "Vic Fangio was the perfect man to oversee the Eagles' defense in 2024, bringing discipline and tenacity back to a unit that had become practically lifeless," Benjamin said. "Now he'll be charged with defending the Birds' crown while likely overseeing new starters at every level of the lineup. Advertisement "Fangio may need veteran Band-Aids like Azeez Ojulari and Adoree' Jackson to help keep the ship afloat early on. It's just the cost of fielding a championship roster." Coaching certainly matters, as Benjamin said. Fangio's ability to get the most out of his young players should help the Eagles field a strong defense for a second straight year. The lack of veteran leadership, though, could cause a problem. Philadelphia projects to possibly have the youngest defense in the league this year, which - as a positive, because youth can be good - is why they were OK with moving on from some of their aging stars this offseason for cap reasons. Advertisement But … Time will tell if that mindset was the right way to go, or if the red flags that come with getting younger can hurt the champs in 2025.
