Alyssa Thomas made a free throw with a second remaining to give the Phoenix Mercury a 78-77 victory over the Golden State Valkyries on Monday night. Janelle Salaun hit a 3-pointer with 10.3 left to get the Valkyries to 76-75 and tied it at 77 on a baseline jumper with 6.8 to go. Golden State Valkyries Make Unexpected Roster Move on Monday

Golden State Valkyries Make Unexpected Roster Move on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In a roster shake‑up that surprised many WNBA fans, the Golden State Valkyries announced on Monday that veteran guard Julie Vanloo has been waived. Advertisement The news comes just one day after Vanloo secured a gold medal with Belgium at EuroBasket Women 2025. Vanloo arrived in San Francisco last fall as part of the expansion draft and quickly became known for her playmaking and leadership. In nine appearances (including two starts), she averaged 4.6 points, 4.1 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. Unfortunately, the Valkyries chose to bring back forwards Janelle Salaun and Cecilia Zandalasini, who were also away participating in the FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Now, the 32-year-old point guard is back on the market. Prior to joining the Valkyries via the WNBA's expansion draft in December 2024, Vanloo had spent a season with the Washington Mystics and more than a decade playing overseas. Advertisement Last season with the Mystics, she averaged 7.4 points, 4.3 assists and 1.6 rebounds across 40 games (34 starts). The Golden State Valkyries waived guard Julie Vanloo (35).Kyle Terada-Imagn Images On Sunday, Vanloo helped Belgium clinch its second consecutive EuroBasket Women title with a dramatic 67-65 win over Spain. There, she was named to the tournament's all‑second team for her steady guard work behind stars Julie Allemand and TISSOT MVP Emma Meesseman. In addition to Vanloo's departure, the Valkyries also cut ties with Chloe Bibby, Bree Hall and Aerial Powers. As the Valkyries prepare to take on the top-ranked Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, all eyes will be on how the revamped roster gels moving forward. Angel Reese's Former Teammate With 0 Minutes Played This Season Makes Career Move

The Golden State Valkyries made a couple of important roster announcements on Sunday ahead of what is expected to be a tough stretch for them. The Valkyries have already lost a number of their players ahead of the EuroBasket tournament this month. Janelle Salaun, Julie Vanloo, Cecilia Zandalasini and Temi Fagbenle have temporarily parted ways with the team to represent their respective countries in the international tournament. This only means that Golden State, which currently holds a 5-5 record in its inaugural season, will need to bring in a few warm bodies to fill the void. The team announced on Sunday that one of the players they have decided to bring in is former Maryland star Chloe Bibby, who played two seasons alongside Angel Reese with the Terrapins. "Roster Update: The Golden State Valkyries have signed forward @chloelbibby. Bibby will join the team immediately and be available against Dallas on Tuesday," the team posted on X. Bibby has been given a tremendous opportunity to show what she's worth now that she's signed a deal with the Valkyries. The 27-year-old penned a training camp contract with Golden State earlier this year, but she was ultimately waived during the final roster cuts. Bibby has not played a single minute in the WNBA. She signed a training camp contract with the Minnesota Lynx in 2022 after going undrafted, but she also failed to make the final cut. The 6-foot-2 forward could now finally make her WNBA debut, potentially as early as Tuesday's game against the Dallas Wings. Bibby played two seasons for Maryland between 2020 and 2022, averaging 12.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. Playing alongside Reese before the Chicago Sky star made the move to LSU, Bibby helped lead the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2021 and 2022. Storm make first visit to short-handed Valkyries

The Golden State Valkyries are expected to be without three key players when they host the Seattle Storm on Saturday night in the continuation of the Commissioner's Cup in San Francisco. Among those expected to be away from the team at FIBA EuroBasket 2025 for potentially more than two weeks is Janelle Salaun of France. Salaun contributed 21 points for Golden State in an 89-81 overtime road victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday. The win improved the Valkyries' record in Commissioner's Cup play to 2-2 with two games remaining in conference play. Julie Vanloo, who made her second start against the Sparks, will play for Belgium in the EuroBasket tournament, while Cecilia Zandalasini, who had 18 points in the Valkyries' most recent home game a 95-68 thrashing of the Las Vegas Aces will represent Italy. FIBA EuroBasket 2025, critical for European national teams attempting to qualify for the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup, concludes June 29. "We have a plan. You have to be ready," said Valkyries coach Natalie Nakase, whose team added veteran free agent Aerial Powers to fill one of the roster vacancies. "Obviously we want them to go with their heart. We're supporting if they want to go to Eurobasket; we're supporting if they want to stay." The Valkyries' roster also includes England native Temi Fagbenle and Carla Leite of France. Leite is expected to remain with Golden State, while Fagbenle is on England's roster, but neither she nor the Valkyries have announced her intentions. The Storm seem to have survived the exporting of WNBA talent, with Gabby Williams and Dominique Malonga, a pair of French standouts, electing to stay with the club. Seattle gained the upper hand in the Western Conference standings of the Commissioner's Cup at 3-1 with a 94-84 home win over the previously unbeaten Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday. The win was the third in a row for Seattle . The Storm and Lynx currently are tied for the West's top spot in the Cup standings, with Seattle owning the tiebreaker edge. Each team has two games remaining, with the conference's top club earning a spot in the Cup finals on July 1. Seattle's visit to San Francisco will be its first in the Valkyries' inaugural season. It serves as a homecoming of sorts for former Stanford star Nneka Ogwumike, who had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double in the win over Minnesota. The 14-year WNBA veteran, a Texas native, recognizes her decision to attend Stanford was life changing. "I'm from Houston, so I'm Southern, I'm officially a West Coast girl," Ogwumike said. "I've been in the Bay , I've been in L.A. , and now I'm in the PNW . The West Coast just feels good for me." Field Level Media

Janelle Salaun had 21 points and eight rebounds, Kayla Thornton made a 3-pointer with 37.9 seconds left in overtime, and the Golden State Valkyries beat the Los Angeles Sparks 89-81 on Monday night. The Monday night victory puts them at a 2-2 record in the Commissioner's Cup. Veronica Burton made her first field goal of the game in overtime and Thornton added a basket on Golden State's next possession for an 82-79 lead. Salaun scored on the Valkyries' third straight possession, following an offensive rebound, to make it 84-81 with 2:03 left. Golden State dominated the rebounding 49-34, including 17-6 on the offensive end. Los Angeles missed 8 of 9 field goals in overtime. Thornton finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Temi Fagbenle added 14 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and four blocks for Golden State (4-5). Carla Leite scored 15 points and Monique Billings added 10. The Valkyries went 20 for 23 at the free-throw line. Kelsey Plum had 24 points, four 3-pointers and seven assists for Los Angeles (3-7). Dearica Hamby added 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Plum reached 1,000 career assists in the fourth quarter. Plum made a step-back 3-pointer with 37.8 left in regulation to give Los Angeles a 78-76 lead. But Golden State had two chances at the other end after an offensive rebound and Leite made a driving layup at 25.1 to tie it. Plum was short on a contested shot in the lane just before the regulation buzzer. The teams were a combined 11 for 57 (19%) from 3-point range. Golden State will face the Seattle Storm on June 14 for another Commissioner's Cup game. ___ AP WNBA:
