LSU fan gifts home-run ball to Jared Jones' father during College World Series game
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The father of LSU first baseman Jared Jones received a special gift from an LSU fan during the Tigers' matchup with the UCLA Bruins on Monday, June 16. LSU fan Dillion Bird gave the home run ball from the bat of Jared Jones to Jones' father, Mr. George, soon after it was hit in the first inning of the game. At the end of the video, Dillion also connected with Jared's mom. Advertisement Jones' blast put the Tigers ahead 4-3, paving the way for the Tigers to defeat the Bruins on Tuesday, June 17, by a score of 9-5 after a weather delay postponed the game on Monday. The moment was captured in a now-viral video by Bird's mother. Dillion said he and his family made the trip to the game together. Dillion said Jones' home run did not make it into the stands. He said, 'Without looking, UCLA's AJ Salgado threw it over his shoulder back into the stands, and it landed right in my lap.' The LSU fan said he immediately started screaming the Tigers' chant, and then his thoughts turned to giving the ball to Mr. George. Advertisement Dillion was seated in Section 134 at the time, and after the inning was over, he went to look for Jones' dad. The LSU fan said Jared's dad thanked him and hugged him tightly. Dillion said he 'was aware before the home run was hit that Jared's parents had never gotten a home run ball back since he went off to college.' Rocco's Jello Shot Challenge: LSU stays in top spot He said that was what made the moment so special. 'Playing ball growing up, I know how much it meant to my parents to get my home-run balls back,' said Dillion. He is thankful that the Lord put the right people in the right place so Jared's dad could get his son's home-run ball. Advertisement Dillion was at the game to support his long-time friend, LSU outfielder Jake Brown. He said they were on the same travel ball team and have played together since they were seven years old. 'Being able to support him on this big of a stage and watching him have success means the world to me and our community back home,' Dillion said. Dillion was born and raised in Louisiana and lived in Baton Rouge for two years while playing baseball at the Baton Rouge Community College. He is now playing for the Lake Charles Gumbeaux Gators in the Texas Collegiate League. Playing for the Gators will keep Dillion from going to Omaha for the LSU series against Coastal Carolina, but he said, 'If I did catch another ball, I might keep that one to myself.' How many times has LSU won the College World Series?
There is perhaps not a more storied and decorated college baseball program in the country than LSU. The sixth-ranked Tigers have an opportunity to add to that history over the next few days at Charles Schwab Field as LSU opens up the best-of-three College World Series championship series on June 21 against No. 13 Coastal Carolina. LSU enters championship week in Omaha coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory against No. 3 Arkansas in the CWS semifinals on June 18. Trailing by two runs heading into the bottom of the ninth, LSU plated three runs in the inning, all of which came on Arkansas fielding mistakes. Jared Jones was the hero for the Tigers with the walk-off single into center. REQUIRED READING: LSU baseball vs Everybody? America rooting for Coastal Carolina at College World Series A series win for LSU would bring a second national championship in the last three years to its trophy case in Baton Rouge. Here's what to know about LSU's history in the CWS championship series, and more: How many times has LSU won the College World Series? LSU has won the College World Series seven times in its rich history. The Tigers first dogpiled in Omaha in 1991 when they defeated Wichita State 6-3. LSU would then win three national titles in a span of five years from 1993 through 1997, a time period that helped build LSU into an SEC and national powerhouse. Then-LSU manager Skip Bertman led the Tigers to their fifth championship in 2000, making him one of just three head coaches to win five NCAA baseball titles. The Tigers' sixth national title came under Paul Mainieri in 2009, when LSU defeated Texas two games to one. When did LSU last win the College World Series? LSU last won the College World Series in 2023, when it took two of three games against No. 2 Florida. The Tigers, a No. 5 seed that season, took Game 1 against the Gators by a score of 4-3. Florida bounced back in Game 2 and crushed LSU, 24-4. Wyatt Langford and Jac Caglianone were unstoppable for the Gators, a combined 7-for-11 at the plate with 11 RBIs, seven runs scored and three home runs. But LSU won the winner-take-all Game 3 against Florida by another lopsided score of 18-4. After falling into a 2-0 deficit after the first inning, LSU plated 10 runs across the second and fourth innings to take a 10-2 lead and never looked back. Brayden Jobert led LSU with three runs — including a home run — and three RBIs. Dylan Crews and Tre' Morgan each scored three runs. LSU recorded 24 total hits compared to Florida's five. "We got punched in the mouth yesterday," Crews said after winning the national championship. "That's the beauty of baseball. You wake up in the morning and do it all over again. We woke up today and you could see on everybody's faces that we were ready to go. Nobody in the country was going to beat us today." To make the CWS finals in 2023, LSU went 3-1 in winners' bracket play, with that lone loss coming in the first CWS semifinal vs. Wake Forest. The Tigers, who needed just a win to advance to the finals, bounced back in the "if necessary" CWS semifinal game vs. the top seeded Demon Deacons, 2-0, behind a masterful eight-inning outing from Paul Skenes and a two-run, walk-off home run from Tommy White. LSU moved into sole possession of second place with its 2023 CWS title. It had been in a tie with Texas. The only team that sits ahead of LSU on the list is USC with 12 titles, though the Tigers have won three CWS titles since the Trojans won their last championship in 1998. When will LSU baseball resume College World Series game vs. UCLA?
LSU and UCLA will wait until Tuesday to complete Game 8 of the College World Series. Just before the start of the fourth inning on Monday night, the game entered a weather delay. After hours passed, CWS and NCAA officials opted to resume the game on Tuesday. The contest will pick up at 10 a.m. CT and be on televised on ESPN2. Advertisement After three innings, LSU leads 5-3. UCLA scored three runs in the first, but LSU answered, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Brown started the comeback with an RBI single before Jared Jones launched a three-run homer. After Anthony Eyanson pitched two scoreless innings, LSU added another run with a Luis Hernandez RBI single. With Eyanson settling in, the delay came at a bad time for LSU. Now, the Tigers will be forced to adjust their pitching plans with Eyanson unavailable on Tuesday. LSU certainly wanted more than three innings from its star pitcher, but these things happen when weather gets involved. The LSU-UCLA loser will be in a tough spot. It will face a quick turnaround to play Arkansas in an elimination game later in the day. College World Series winners and losers: The best and worst from Day 5 in Omaha
Day 5 of the 2024 College World Series saw two more teams go home as the semifinal matchups were set. Louisville defeated Oregon State, 7-6, in a nailbiter as the Beavers came back from a three-run deficit in the top of the ninth only to give up the lead in the bottom of the inning. In the nightcap, Arkansas defeated UCLA, 7-3. The Bruins had previously resumed a suspended game against LSU in the morning, losing, 9-5. Advertisement In the semifinals beginning June 18, Arkansas will face LSU and Coastal Carolina will face Louisville. The Tigers and Chanticleers need only a single win, while the Razorbacks and Cardinals must win twice to advance to the championship series. Here are the winners and losers: WINNERS Home runs (finally) After the early games in Omaha saw very few home runs hit, the long ball made more of an impact on Day 5. LSU's Jared Jones hit a three-run homer that ultimately proved the game-winner in its game against UCLA (although the home run technically took place the night before, prior to the game being suspended due to rain). In the elimination game between Louisville and Oregon State, the Cardinals and Beavers hit two home runs apiece. Then, in the nightcap between Arkansas and UCLA, the Razorbacks got on the board with a two-run homer from Wehiwa Aloy. Advertisement After six total home runs in the first eight games, Day 5 featured five home runs. The SEC The SEC has had at least one team in every Men's College World Series final since 2016, and four of the last seven championship series have featured two SEC teams (not including 2022, when now-SEC member Oklahoma participated as a member of the Big 12). But the league has had a rough postseason. Despite qualifying 13 teams to the tournament, just four of those teams made a super regional, and two of those teams (Arkansas and Tennessee) played each other. Two SEC teams made it to Omaha, but because they were on the same side of the bracket, it was guaranteed that at least one non-SEC team would get a shot at a championship. Advertisement But now, the SEC is guaranteed to have a team opposite Louisville or Coastal Carolina with LSU and Arkansas in the semifinal. The league has a good shot of having its sixth straight champion. Wehiwa Aloy The SEC Player of the Year had a quiet Omaha so far. But facing a fellow star shortstop in Roch Cholowsky, Aloy had a strong outing in the elimination game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs. He hit a two-run home run to the opposite field in the first inning, showing off the power that has him ranked as a top MLB draft prospect. LOSERS Defense (again) Of 15 errors committed in the College World Series so far, eight of them were by Oregon State. That cost the Beavers dearly, as it was an error on a sacrifice bunt that set up the eventual walk-off sacrifice fly that eliminated them. Advertisement But Oregon State was only in the game at that point because of an error. In the top of the ninth inning, the Beavers were down two runs with the bases loaded and one out when Louisville shortstop Alex Alicea booted a routine double-play ball. The error allowed two runs to score. In the ninth inning of the Arkansas-UCLA game, the Razorbacks committed two errors, both of which led to runs scoring. The West Coast When the Pac-12 still existed, it had been over three decades since three of the league's teams had all made it to Omaha. In the first season after the league's dissolution, three former Pac-12 teams made it in Arizona, Oregon State and UCLA. Advertisement But none of those three teams will make it to the semifinals. Arizona was the first team eliminated, failing to win a game in Omaha. Oregon State and UCLA were both eliminated on Day 5. "A lot of good players in the West, a lot of good coaches on the West. I think it has a bright future," UCLA coach John Savage said. "Bright future is maybe not the right word, because you look at the national championships and you look at the history of Omaha and West Coast teams. But things have changed. Everybody knows things have changed in terms of the facilities and the power. And the SEC clearly had a huge day, right, with Arkansas and LSU. But at the same time, you know, I think we can certainly build off this." Gage Wood: How Arkansas baseball, Murray State reacted to Gage Wood's College World Series no-hitter Gage Wood Gage Wood was the biggest winner from Day 4 as his 19-strikeout no-hitter against Murray State made headlines. But just a day later, Wood forgot his jersey at the hotel, forcing him to wear Zach Root's windbreaker. Advertisement "We teach our kids to be honest around here," Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn quipped when Root admitted the reason for the windbreaker.
