Everton and Jarrad Branthwaite close to agreement over new contract
Everton and defender Jarrad Branthwaite are close to an agreement over a new contract. Manchester United saw £35million and £45m plus add-ons offers for the England international rejected last summer and he has continued to stay on the radar of top clubs. The 23-year-old's current terms run until 2027 with the club holding the option of a further year but, while nothing is yet signed, discussions have progressed well with an agreement over a fresh long-term deal now seen as close. Advertisement Where there was an acceptance last summer they would have to sell if the right offer came in, The Athletic reported earlier this month that the club, under new owners The Friedkin Group, had informed interested suitors 12 months on that he was not for sale. David Moyes has been steadfast in his commitment to keeping Branthwaite on Merseyside and in April insisted the club 'hold all the cards' in the situation. 'Good players will always be linked with moves away, especially good young players,' the Everton manager said. 'But you have to remember Jarrad's got a three-year contract left, he's got two years and a year's option so if anything Everton hold all the cards regarding that player. 'But I have to also say over the journey I've had over many years at Everton we've had to sell different players from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott. 'Apart from being a football manager, especially at certain clubs you have to sell on the journey to try and build as well. But I wouldn't think that Jarrad one of the players I would want to lose, that's for sure.' Branthwaite has made 86 appearances for the club since joining from Carlisle United in January 2020, including 33 in all competitions this past season. He made his senior England debut last summer before missing out on selection for the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024. That appearance, against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is his sole outing to date. Everton have been well protected when it comes to Branthwaite. He has two years remaining on his contract, plus a club option for a third. But his situation is atypical. He signed his last deal in the autumn of 2023, just as he was cementing a regular first-team berth. The Carlisle United academy graduate is a key player now, but not one of Everton's top earners. In that sense, there is a disconnect. Advertisement The club have made it clear of their desire not only to retain his services this summer, but by retaining him on new terms. This has become a key issue for new owners The Friedkin Group, manager David Moyes and CEO Angus Kinnear. It is notable, for example, that they have taken steps to tie Branthwaite down at a time when others, such as vice-captain James Tarkowski, midfielder James Garner and left-back Vitalii Mykolenko are soon to go into the final 12 months of their deals. They want to build around Branthwaite and would see his retention in the face of interest as a show of intent. ()

Everton have just opened talks on their most significant deal of the summer
Agreeing a new deal with Jarrad Branthwaite would be one of the most significant acts of Everton's summer. The club faces a rebuilding project the scale of which has rarely been seen in the Premier League era. Advertisement As it stands, just 14 senior players will be under contract come July 1 ahead of a landmark first season at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. Yet for all the incomings that are required, protecting a player who is already at Finch Farm would be a real statement of intent. READ MORE: Everton open Jarrad Branthwaite talks amid summer transfer interest READ MORE: Everton have ambitious plan as The Friedkin Group make intentions clear Among the many items on the Blues' 'to-do' list, Everton entered the summer braced for interest in Branthwaite . His breakthrough campaign in 2023/24 alerted a host of clubs to his potential and led to two speculative bids from Manchester United. Advertisement Twelve months ago, as INEOS appeared keen to make the defender the first piece of their own regeneration project, it was possible to believe they might make good on their hopes of turning the club around. Instead, they submitted two spurious bids that fell well short of Everton's valuation of Branthwaite and moved on, descending into chaos. When they appeared at Goodison Park in the spring their squad had centre backs that had cost them more than £200m - yet it was the £1m signing from Carlisle who stood out on that pitch as a sorry opponent laboured before a late comeback. This season has been tougher for Branthwaite as injury dogged his opening months and the upheaval at Everton threatened to push the club into a fourth consecutive relegation fight. Advertisement Yet he grew into the campaign and, under David Moyes, became part of a defensive unit that was among the most effective in the top flight. That unit, particularly the axis of Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford, is what Moyes wants to build his new squad around . Amid uncertainty almost everywhere else on the pitch, those three provide stability and genuine, proven quality - something the Blues boss hopes to replicate elsewhere on the pitch. If Everton can protect their defensive base then creating a side that can make genuine progress next season is a reality. Central to that is Branthwaite, who has the potential to be a talismanic figure for years to come but is again being courted by Champions League clubs. Advertisement He is understood to be content on Merseyside and appreciative of the opportunities the club have provided him thus far, though Thomas Tuchel's approach to his England squad - favouring those who are playing in Europe - is problematic as he attempts to fight his way into the World Cup squad next summer. Everton cannot enter new talks ignorant of his potential or his ambition, and if they are to ensure he is not tempted by serious bids from elsewhere then any offer will have to reflect his status as being pivotal to the club's plans.

Everton transfers and contracts: What we're hearing on Branthwaite, Gueye and Barry
There is an early sense of deja vu about Everton's summer window. Once again, defender Jarrad Branthwaite is dominating the headlines. A year ago, Manchester United tried to take advantage of the Merseyside club's fraught financial position, submitting two bids for Branthwaite considerably below Everton's asking price of around £75million. Advertisement Speculation over a potential move has persisted this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur the most strongly linked. But Everton have taken a more bullish approach over Branthwaite. Where there was an acceptance last summer that they would have to sell if the right offer came in, The Athletic reported this month that the club had informed interested suitors of their desire to keep hold of the England international. From there, the logical direction of travel was always going to involve discussions over a new deal. Everton are well protected when it comes to the 22-year-old. The club have now informed him of their desire not only to retain his services this summer, but offer new terms. Discussions have taken place but remain at an exploratory stage. This has become a key issue for new owners The Friedkin Group, manager David Moyes and CEO Angus Kinnear. It is notable, for example, that they have taken initial tentative steps to tie Branthwaite down at a time when others, such as vice-captain James Tarkowski, midfielder James Garner and left-back Vitalii Mykolenko are soon to go into the final 12 months of their deals. They want to build around Branthwaite and would see his retention in the face of interest as a show of intent. Equally, they will not want to be seen to climb down from their position. Their hand would be further strengthened should they manage to agree fresh terms, but even then, it would be a surprise if interest did not persist. What comes next will be fascinating and tell us much about whether TFG is able to turn positive intent into something more tangible. Everton have made their first signing of the summer by triggering loanee Carlos Alcaraz's €15m purchase option. He will join officially at the end of the month. Yet most of the intrigue, out of necessity, has involved those soon to be out of contract. Club captain Seamus Coleman, midfield stalwart Idrissa Gueye, striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Michael Keane all see their deals expire at the end of the month. Advertisement An offer has been made to Coleman, while talks have continued with Gueye. Everton have been reluctant to offer the Senegal international a multi-year contract, with an initial one-year extension containing the option for an additional 12 months the direction of travel. Gueye is one of the high earners and will be 36 in September, even if he has shown little sign of slowing down. There has been confidence at Everton over a new deal, but it is still to be agreed or signed. With a squad rebuild to come, they will hope to avoid another headache in midfield. Largely through new head of trading Nick Hammond and manager Moyes, Everton have remained in contact with the representatives of Keane and Calvert-Lewin. New deals for either have not been completely ruled out, but Keane has interest from clubs in England's top two leagues as well as MLS. He is expected to want a multi-year deal. Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity to protect relationships, suggest that the most likely outcome with Calvert-Lewin remains a departure. Talks up to now have not yielded much progress, with the club keen to remain disciplined in their negotiating position. The 28-year-old is likely to want a long-term deal on lucrative terms. The uncertainty there, together with Armando Broja's return to Chelsea, has increased the prospect of Everton dipping into the market for a striker. The Athletic was first to report interest in Villarreal's Thierno Barry this month and the 22-year-old remains a key target. Everton's pursuit of Barry is complicated by his participation at the Under-21 European Championship with France, plus a lofty release clause set at €40m. The club would prefer to negotiate with Villarreal rather than trigger that clause. Moyes continues to play an active role in the recruitment process and has taken in Club World Cup games from his Miami base. Advertisement Everton continue to assess targets and sound out their availability, but due to the overhaul behind the scenes and lingering profit and sustainability rule considerations, this was always likely to be a window in which the bulk of the business came later. The problem for Everton is that they have so much to do and little time to waste. The window is unlikely to remain quiet for long.

Everton respond as Liverpool include Jarrad Branthwaite on two-man wishlist
Liverpool are the latest club to be credited with an interest in Jarrad Branthwaite but Everton have made a move to try and lock the England defender down with a new deal Everton have opened talks with Jarrad Branthwaite over a potential contract extension amid fresh transfer interest in the defender, whose suitors now include Liverpool. Branthwaite, 22, has established himself as one of the Premier League 's top young defenders and was the subject of a £50million bid from Manchester United last summer. And after another stellar season for the Toffees, Branthwaite is once again attracting interest. It emerged earlier this week that Tottenham have set their sights on the former Carlisle United man as they seek to refresh their squad under Thomas Frank. And they are not alone in courting Branthwaite with Liverpool - Everton's bitter rivals - also among the talented defender's suitors. Everton, though, have no interest in cashing in on Branthwaite this summer and have already started to speak with the player's representatives in a bid to lock him down with a new contract. The Echo report that retaining Branthwaite's services for the 25-26 campaign is a priority for Everton, who finished last season with a flourish following the return of David Moyes. The Scot is determined to 'build his defence' around Branthwaite, who still has two years left to run on his current deal. But interest from elsewhere in the Premier League could complicate matters for Everton. While Liverpool are admirers of Branthwaite, it seems they are poised to step up their interest Marc Guehi, the Crystal Palace defender who was also courted heavily by top clubs last summer. Join the debate! Where do you think Branthwaite will be playing next season? Let us know here The 24-year-old England star was the subject of two failed transfer bids from Newcastle 12 months ago but is now in the final year of his deal, meaning Palace's bargaining power is not as strong as it once was. Guehi has been earmarked as a potential replacement for Jarell Quansah, who is in talks over a move to Bayer Leverkusen. A deal - which would be separate to the agreement which will see Florian Wirtz become a Liverpool player this weekend - could happen with the Bundesliga outfit ready to pay around £34m. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Milos Kerkez, who would join from Bournemouth, while they are also said to be on the lookout for a new striker with Darwin Nunez expected to move on in the transfer window.
