Everton and Jarrad Branthwaite close to agreement over new contract

New York Times21 hours ago

Everton and defender Jarrad Branthwaite are close to an agreement over a new contract.
Manchester United saw £35million and £45m plus add-ons offers for the England international rejected last summer and he has continued to stay on the radar of top clubs.
The 23-year-old's current terms run until 2027 with the club holding the option of a further year but, while nothing is yet signed, discussions have progressed well with an agreement over a fresh long-term deal now seen as close.

Where there was an acceptance last summer they would have to sell if the right offer came in, The Athletic reported earlier this month that the club, under new owners The Friedkin Group, had informed interested suitors 12 months on that he was not for sale.
David Moyes has been steadfast in his commitment to keeping Branthwaite on Merseyside and in April insisted the club 'hold all the cards' in the situation.
'Good players will always be linked with moves away, especially good young players,' the Everton manager said. 'But you have to remember Jarrad's got a three-year contract left, he's got two years and a year's option so if anything Everton hold all the cards regarding that player.
'But I have to also say over the journey I've had over many years at Everton we've had to sell different players from Wayne Rooney to Mikel Arteta to Joleon Lescott.
'Apart from being a football manager, especially at certain clubs you have to sell on the journey to try and build as well. But I wouldn't think that Jarrad one of the players I would want to lose, that's for sure.'
Branthwaite has made 86 appearances for the club since joining from Carlisle United in January 2020, including 33 in all competitions this past season.
He made his senior England debut last summer before missing out on selection for the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024. That appearance, against Bosnia and Herzegovina, is his sole outing to date.
Everton have been well protected when it comes to Branthwaite. He has two years remaining on his contract, plus a club option for a third. But his situation is atypical.
He signed his last deal in the autumn of 2023, just as he was cementing a regular first-team berth. The Carlisle United academy graduate is a key player now, but not one of Everton's top earners. In that sense, there is a disconnect.

The club have made it clear of their desire not only to retain his services this summer, but by retaining him on new terms.
This has become a key issue for new owners The Friedkin Group, manager David Moyes and CEO Angus Kinnear.
It is notable, for example, that they have taken steps to tie Branthwaite down at a time when others, such as vice-captain James Tarkowski, midfielder James Garner and left-back Vitalii Mykolenko are soon to go into the final 12 months of their deals. They want to build around Branthwaite and would see his retention in the face of interest as a show of intent.

Guardiola suggests more Man City exits are likely this summer

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested players will leave the club this summer. City have already added four signings this summer in Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Advertisement It also followed a busy January, in which they also added four new players. And Guardiola has suggested that some players will have to move on in order to trim down their squad. 'I would love to have the players that we have right now all season,' he said. 'I love it. I don't have any complaint about the players, how they behave. 'The problem is that they will be unhappy during the season. They will be sad. They will be disappointed. I don't want that. For me it's not a problem, I have more selection but I don't like to have six or seven players or five players at home just in case there's no injuries. Advertisement 'I don't want a big squad for them, not for me, for them. So that's why we have to see what happens.' City take on United Arab Emirates side Al Ain in their second group game at the Club World Cup, but Guardiola insists that even if they win this competition, it still does not make up for their disappointing season. 'What I am disappointed with most is the Champions League, that we were not really good when there were more and more games to qualify,' he said. 'We had, I don't know, 40 or 50% of the squad injured. So it was tough to handle it. It's not going to change whether we win this competition or we arrive in the last stages.' Advertisement Guardiola also suggested he could manager in South America before he retires. He said: 'Why not? So many, many good things in all history happened in football. 'Many, many good things come from South America, from Brazil, from especially Brazil, Argentina, from Colombia, Uruguay. I would say all the countries, many good things in football, the greatest players come from there. 'I admire how they defend, see Boca Juniors, how every single ball is like, wow, the end of the world, it's a different style, different way to play it's really, really good.'

Sunderland to smash club record transfer to sign Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra

Sunderland AFC have reached an agreement with Ligue 1 side Strasbourg to sign their highly-coveted midfielder and captain Habib Diarra (21), according to a report from Foot Mercato. The Black Cats, who have been promoted to the Premier League after defeating Sheffield United in the promotion play-offs final, are set to smash their club record transfer to sign Diarra. The outlet understands that Sunderland's transfer fee rises to €35m, taking into account add-ons, outbidding Leeds' previous offer. Sunderland AFC were in the market for a midfielder after parting ways with Jobe Bellingham, who followed in his older brother's footsteps in signing for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund. As for Diarra, he was allowed to leave Liam Rosenior's Alsatians, should a suitable bid go their way. Selling Diarra for €35 million would also constitute a record for the Ligue 1 side. Advertisement Foot Mercato understands that Diarra has also given his green light to sign for the Premier League side. Premier League clubs had taken notice of Diarra when the midfielder scored for Senegal in a friendly against England on June 10, and the Tyneside outfit has now won the race for his signing.
