Gulf states committed to building drug-free societies: Al-Budaiwi
RIYADH, June 26: Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jassim Al-Budaiwi, reaffirmed on Thursday the unwavering commitment of GCC member states to combating drug abuse and trafficking, emphasizing their dedication to safeguarding Gulf communities and reinforcing the safety and security of the region's citizens. His remarks came during a ceremony marking both the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking and the Gulf Anti-Drug Week. The event, held at the GCC General Secretariat headquarters in Riyadh, was attended by senior officials from the interior ministries and other relevant authorities of GCC countries. Al-Budaiwi highlighted that the occasion underscores the collective resolve of the Gulf states to continue united efforts to protect societies from the dangers of narcotics, in line with directives issued by GCC leaders. These directives consider the preservation of societal security a shared national responsibility that necessitates cooperation on security, legislative, and awareness-raising fronts. He further explained that the Gulf Anti-Drug Strategy for 2025–2028 provides a comprehensive framework to guide the region's efforts. The strategy focuses on reducing both the supply and demand of drugs, eliminating sources of trafficking, promoting alternative development, strengthening legislation, combating money laundering, and enhancing joint monitoring and capacity-building. It aims to ensure an integrated approach encompassing prevention, treatment, and security measures. Al-Budaiwi stressed that the fight against drugs is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action and sustainable cooperation between governments, communities, and individuals. He noted that the GCC Secretariat is actively working to implement the strategy and support initiatives that contribute to building drug-free societies. He underscored the pivotal role of families and communities as the first line of defense through education and sustained care. Educational institutions, religious bodies, media organizations, and civil society also play a crucial part in fostering awareness and creating a safe and healthy social environment. Moreover, Al-Budaiwi highlighted the importance of reintegrating recovering addicts into society by providing psychological and social support. He pointed out that GCC countries have established specialized hospitals and rehabilitation centers aimed at treatment, empowerment, and breaking the stigma surrounding addiction. In conclusion, Al-Budaiwi expressed his appreciation for the ongoing collaboration with ministries and agencies across the Gulf, including the ministries of interior, health, education, justice, and social affairs. He also acknowledged the vital roles of customs authorities, coast guards, national committees, and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in the joint effort to combat drug abuse.

Kuwait welcomes the UN resolution on strengthening cooperation with the GCC
KUWAIT CITY, June 19: The State of Kuwait on Wednesday welcomed the adoption of a historic United Nations General Assembly resolution aimed at enhancing cooperation between the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The resolution, titled 'Cooperation between the United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council', was submitted by Kuwait—currently holding the presidency of the GCC — on behalf of all member states through its Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. It was adopted by consensus among UN member states, marking the first such resolution to formalize cooperation between the two entities. In a statement, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the resolution reflects the depth of historical cooperation between the UN and the GCC, aligning with Article 52 of the UN Charter, which encourages partnerships with regional organizations to support international peace and security. The Ministry affirmed that the resolution aims to institutionalize the relationship between the secretariats of the UN and GCC by initiating annual high-level strategic meetings, enhancing joint capabilities in conflict prevention, mediation, early warning, and crisis management, and coordinating responses to emerging security challenges. Kuwait expressed pride in presenting what it described as a 'historic resolution' on behalf of fellow GCC member states and reaffirmed its commitment to advancing multilateral cooperation and building effective global partnerships. The Ministry highlighted Kuwait's dedication to contributing constructively to both regional and international peace and stability. Meanwhile, GCC Secretary General Jassim Al-Budaiwi also praised the adoption of the resolution, underscoring its importance as a new milestone in regional and global cooperation. He lauded Kuwait's diplomatic efforts, particularly through its UN mission, and emphasized that the resolution sets the foundation for a stronger strategic partnership between the GCC and the UN. Al-Budaiwi noted that this resolution paves the way for collaborative initiatives and expanded joint efforts, aligning with the GCC's commitment to openness and constructive engagement with international institutions. He concluded by emphasizing that the move reflects the spirit of Gulf integration and demonstrates the council's proactive approach to working with global partners in addressing regional and international challenges.

GCC on High Alert as Israel-Iran Conflict Threatens Regional Stability
KUWAIT CITY, June 16: As direct hostilities between Israel and Iran escalate into what observers are describing as a phase of near-total military devastation, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) convened an emergency meeting to address the widening regional crisis and reinforce calls for an immediate ceasefire. Now entering its fourth day, the unprecedented confrontation between the two arch-rivals has seen strikes deep within both countries' territories, raising fears of a broader conflict with severe global repercussions. Amid growing international pressure to end the violence, Kuwait has ramped up its diplomatic engagement, with Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Yahya—current chair of the GCC Ministerial Council—presiding over the Council's 48th extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers. The meeting, held to assess regional and global developments, focused on enhancing joint Gulf action and intensifying diplomatic efforts to safeguard regional security and stability. In a strongly worded statement, the GCC Ministerial Council condemned Israel's military attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing them as a flagrant violation of Iranian sovereignty, international law, and the United Nations Charter. The Council emphasized the urgent need to return to diplomatic dialogue and called for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further regional destabilization. Particular concern was voiced over the risk of targeting nuclear facilities, a move that could have catastrophic consequences for both human safety and environmental security. The Council urged the United Nations Security Council and the broader international community to intervene decisively, halt the conflict, and facilitate the resumption of stalled U.S.-Iran nuclear negotiations—efforts currently being mediated by the Sultanate of Oman. Reaffirming its commitment to maritime security, the GCC also highlighted the critical need to protect shipping lanes and commercial vessels across the region. The Council warned against continued attacks on oil infrastructure and trade routes, noting the potential impact on global energy markets and regional economies. GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al-Budaiwi echoed calls for restraint, warning that continued military escalation could push the region into a full-blown war with unpredictable and uncontrollable consequences. He urged all involved parties to refrain from further military actions and to prioritize diplomatic solutions. In anticipation of possible fallout, Al-Budaiwi also announced the activation of the GCC Emergency Management Center, tasked with monitoring environmental and radiation safety. 'So far, all technical indicators remain within safe limits and there is no immediate cause for concern,' he said, adding that the region remains on full alert to ensure maximum readiness for any developments.

Single GCC Tourist Visa by the End of This Year
KUWAIT CITY, Jun 3: The longstanding Iraq-Kuwait border dispute returned to the spotlight during a meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers, as the Council reiterated calls for Iraq to resolve key pending issues and respect international agreements. GCC Secretary-General Jassim Al-Budaiwi expressed optimism that a unified Gulf visa system could be finalized before the end of the year. However, much of the diplomatic focus centered on Iraq, with Kuwait's Foreign Minister and current chairman of the GCC Ministerial Council, Abdullah Al-Yahya, calling for tangible progress from Baghdad on the unresolved files of prisoners, missing persons, and seized Kuwaiti property. Speaking to the press following the ministerial session, Al-Yahya underscored the need for continued UN Security Council oversight, including the appointment of a senior coordinator to carry forward efforts following the expiration of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). 'The Council reaffirmed Iraq's obligation to respect Kuwait's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and maritime borders under international resolutions,' Al-Yahya said. He noted the Council's firm rejection of any violation of Kuwaiti territory, including land, islands, highlands, and maritime areas. He further emphasized Kuwait's commitment to the outcomes of the 47th extraordinary meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council, held on May 6, particularly concerning maritime border demarcation beyond Marker 162. Al-Yahya urged Iraq to honor existing agreements on maritime navigation in the strategically vital Khor Abdullah waterway. Kuwaiti-Syrian Relations Also in Focus In a separate diplomatic development, Foreign Minister Al-Yahya confirmed that recent talks between Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah covered a wide range of bilateral and regional issues. The Amir reaffirmed Kuwait's support for Syria's sovereignty and territorial unity, Al-Yahya noted, adding that President Al-Shara met with members of the Syrian expatriate community and private sector representatives during his visit. Looking ahead, the foreign minister said additional meetings are expected between Syrian and Kuwaiti counterparts, both at the governmental and civil society levels. Regarding the potential reopening of Kuwait's embassy in Damascus, Al-Yahya stated that the process is underway, though the timeline is tied to Kuwait's internal administrative procedures and not related to any political considerations with Syria. He confirmed that the matter is progressing and expected to be finalized soon.
