Clash over Ambedkar songs at Dalit wedding procession in Mathura; 2 hurt
Agra: A violent clash involving stone-pelting and physical assault broke out on Saturday evening in Mathura during the wedding procession of two Dalit grooms, allegedly over DJ music featuring songs dedicated to BR Ambedkar and those "glorifying" the Jatav community. Police said the incident occurred between 6:30 and 7:30 pm in Dahrua village under Jamunapar police station limits. According to the FIR filed by Devendra Kumar, cousin of the grooms Ram Kumar (22) and Saurabh Kumar (23), "In the wedding procession, the DJ was playing songs praising the Jatav community. Some members of the Thakur community objected to the songs and started pelting stones and hurling abuses." The objection quickly escalated into a physical altercation, in which two people sustained minor injuries. Local police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Jamunapar SHO Ajay Kishore said, "An FIR has been filed in connection with the matter under BNS sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (assault or criminal force), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 125 (endangering life or personal safety of others), and relevant provisions of the SC/ST Act against three people." DSP Sandeep Singh of Mathura's Sadar area added, "I am investigating this case. Prima facie, we have found that the issue was with the DJ playing the songs, not with the people in the wedding procession. Two people have been detained for questioning and the probe is ongoing."

Faridabad Dalit youth assault: Family cries foul after hospital discharges him without further treatment
The family of a Faridabad Dalit youth who was allegedly brutally assaulted and forcefully tonsured last month has claimed that he was discharged from a private hospital despite having serious injuries, including a fracture and internal bleeding, without surgery or additional treatment. 'They asked us to arrange two bottles of blood, which we did. And now, without any surgery, operation or further treatment, they discharged him, saying there is no approval (to bear the costs of treatment). How can this be?' asked Suraj, the cousin of Sahil, 18, who had to return home Thursday evening while still nursing a fracture, internal bleeding, and injury to the soft tissue in the occipital part of the brain, as documented in the discharge summary. After Suraj, 32, lodged a complaint last month, the Faridabad police arrested the 19-year-old prime accused and apprehended two of his minor accomplices. On June 26, Sahil was shifted from the Badshah Khan civil hospital to a private hospital. Faridabad district Chief Medical Officer Dr Jayant Ahuja said this was done with the family's approval for better treatment. 'The deputy commissioner and the CMO helped facilitate the transfer. But now, he has been released while still wounded and hurt,' Suraj said. The discharge summary, accessed by The Indian Express, also notes an episode of vomiting with blood, swelling across the body, high creatinine levels, anaemia and chronic kidney disease. 'He needs more intensive treatment. His ribs are also damaged. I think this might be a way to get the attempt to murder charge in the FIR dropped (by the accused with connivance of authorities),' Suraj added. When contacted, the private hospital said the teen was admitted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and was discharged after a dialysis was carried out by the nephrology department. After Sahil had returned home limping after the assault, the family alleged the accused had hurled casteist slurs at Sahil. In his complaint, Suraj alleged the four accused 'kept the teenager hostage in a room… cut his hair, eyebrows, moustache and beard, turned him upside down and beat him with sticks and an iron rod'. The police, however, earlier said there is no caste angle. The FIR, though, invokes the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, among other charges. Sahil's family is from the Jatav caste. The medico-legal report found the teen had sustained 12 wounds, 10 of which were blunt force impact ones needing orthopaedic assessment, and two 'simple' ones caused by a sharp object.

Apna Dal (S) expands base for 2027 UP Polls
The Apna Dal (Soneylal) party led by Anupriya Patel , is filling its organisational ranks with backward castes besides Kurmis, Dalits and Muslims and also giving tickets to them, as the party looks to increase its base both geographically and socially in Uttar Pradesh which is facing assembly elections in 2027. Even though it is a BJP ally , Apna Dal (S) has been giving tickets to Muslims with Anupriya stating categorically time and again that her party is different from the BJP. Eyeing to improve its tally in the 2027 assembly polls and to emerge as a pan-Uttar Pradesh force, the Apna Dal (S) is readying its social engineering strategy among the socially backward castes. The party, which is usually identified with the Kurmis in Eastern UP, has now appointed a Jatav (Dalit) as its UP unit chief and a Muslim as its youth wing head. The party has also appointed two Muslims, a Pasi (SC) and a Sahu (SC) also in its organisational team for UP. In her interactions with the top BJP leadership at the Centre and also in Uttar Pradesh, Anupriya has always highlighted issues related to the OBCs and SCs, whether it be appointment of teachers in the state or other issues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Birla Evara 3 and 4 BHK from ₹ 1.75 Crore* Birla Estates Learn More Undo Social justice has been a major theme of the party's ideology, party leaders said as evident in the fact that out of its 13 MLAs, five are Dalits, one a Muslim, one an OBC and one from the general caste.

In pursuit of UP poll leverage, how BJP ally Apna Dal (S) is playing the long game
Looking to expand beyond its core Kurmi base and strengthen its organisation, the Apna Dal (Soneylal) party has been making key appointments for the past month in Uttar Pradesh. On May 29, the party led by Union Minister Anupriya Patel appointed Dalit leader R P Gautam, who hails from the Jatav community, as its state president, and on June 16, it tapped Prayagraj-based youth leader Ammad Hassan to lead its youth wing. In addition to this, the party recently also appointed coordinators for each of the 403 Assembly seats in UP. Sources said the new appointments were an attempt to showcase the party's strength in the run-up to founder Sone Lal Patel's birth anniversary on July 2 and set the ball rolling for the panchayat polls in 2026. Anupriya Patel and state Cabinet Minister Ashish Patel, her husband, have been conducting monthly party meetings in Lucknow to take stock of the organisational overhaul. Anupriya has also started publicly pushing for a separate Union Ministry for OBCs and highlighted the party's strategy to reach out to various OBC communities to create a broader vote bank. Sources said the efforts were all in preparation for the 2027 polls, and the BJP ally wants to be in a position to go solo if needed and have greater bargaining power. 'We are moving strategically and trying to strengthen our party and its base. In the next few days, you will see more announcements. We are the only party in the state to have a Jatav Dalit state chief. We might not be in a position to take policy decisions directly for the Dalits and OBCs. But we are making attempts to influence policy decisions,' said a senior party leader. He also said the party's outreach efforts were visible in the issues they were backing 'We are supporting the demand for a caste-based Census, pushing for OBC reservation in central schools and NEET examinations … Our leader Anupriya Patel ji is pushing with a fresh demand for a separate OBC Ministry,' the leader said. Newly appointed state president Gautam told The Indian Express that efforts were on to expand the party and strengthen it at the grassroots. 'Our pitch will be centred on social justice and upliftment of the deprived sections,' he said. After Anupriya took over the party in 2009, Apna Dal (S) saw its best performance in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, when it won 12 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Apna Dal (S) contested two seats. Patel retained her Mirzapur Lok Sabha constituency by more than 37,000 votes, but the party lost Robertsganj. In a bid to course correct, and to be on surer footing, the party dissolved all of its units and started building its organisation from scratch after the polls. On April 14, the birth anniversary of B R Ambedkar, the Apna Dal (S) launched a statewide membership drive. The panchayat polls, which are due early next year, will be the first test for the party after the revamp. Even though the panchayat polls in UP are not contested on party lines, political parties directly or indirectly extend their support to candidates. This time, the party has decided to extend support to candidates in a more official and structured manner, according to insiders.

3 injured in attack on Dalit wedding procession in U.P.'s Amroha; caste abuse alleged
At least three people were injured on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) after a wedding procession by members of a Dalit community was pelted with stones and hit with rods and sticks in Rahdra village in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. Two daughters of Rampal, a local belonging to the Jatav (Dalit) community, were getting married. Of the two wedding processions on Monday, the first was from Hasanpur, and the other, from Moradabad, arrived later. The baraat (wedding procession) of Sonam Kumari, the older daughter, arrived from Moradabad. The incident took place during the second procession. 'On June 2, a wedding procession was being carried out around 5.30 p.m. Around 15-20 people from the same village, belonging to the Yadav community, forcefully entered the wedding procession and stopped us from dancing. When we opposed it, all the above people used casteist words and attacked us with sticks, rods, knives, and sharp-edged weapons to kill us. I, too, received an open injury on my head and many other small injuries,' Kanhaiya, the complainant, and a resident of Rahdra, said. He said many in the procession received knife injuries. 'The Yadavs said, 'how can people from our [Dalit] community take out wedding processions'?' Mr. Kanhaiya, who belongs to the Jatav community, alleged. Charges have been filed under Sections 191(2) (rioting), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 109 (attempt to murder), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police have also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015). The case was registered at the Gajrala police station. A video purported to be of the chaotic scene has surfaced on social media. Police said they had to resort to mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order. In view of the heightened tensions, a police force has been deployed to maintain law and order. A senior police officer said that the incident had occurred because the road was narrow, loud music was playing in the background, and the people in the wedding procession could not provide space for the Yadav vehicles to pass. 'This led to an argument, which later turned into an altercation,' the officer said.
