Sri Lanka spinners leave Bangladesh on verge of crushing defeat
Spinners Dhananjaya de Silva and Prabath Jayasurya rounded off another dominant day for Sri Lanka yesterday, taking two wickets each to leave them on the brink of a crushing innings victory over Bangladesh in the second Test. By close of play on the third day at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, the visitors had slumped to 115-6 in their second innings, still 96 runs away from making Sri Lanka bat again. Bangladesh started their second innings with a daunting deficit of 211 after Kusal Mendis's forthright 84 had taken the Sri Lanka first innings to 458 all out earlier in the day. All seven batters so far in the Bangladesh second innings made it into double figures but only Mushfiqur Rahim made it beyond 20, making 26 before being beaten all ends up by Jayasuriya. With only four wickets in hand, it will be a tough ask of the Bangladesh lower order to see off the Sri Lanka spinners, who have been gaining plenty of turn, from wrapping up the Test and the two-match series. The first Test ended in a draw. Sri Lanka batter Kamindu Mendis said that the 'wicket is spinning now from both ends and its not easy for the batters'. 'We will look to wrap this up quickly,' he said after the day's play. Earlier, leading from the front, skipper De Silva dealt twin blows with his off-spin in the evening session yesterday. He had Mominul Haque (15) caught at first slip before trapping his opposite number Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) leg before. Left-arm spinner Jayasuriya, under pressure to keep his spot after a lean patch, also responded in style with a probing spell. He struck with the new ball, removing Shadman Islam (12) caught behind, and then bowled Mushfiqur. The early part of the day belonged to Kusal Mendis who hammered a rapid 84 off 87 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, when it looked as though the Sri Lanka first innings was faltering.

Prabath Jayasuriya Scalps 5, Sri Lanka Clinch Series Victory Over Bangladesh
Sri Lanka wrapped up the second Test and the series by orchestrating a resounding victory by an innings and 78 runs and a 1-0 series win over Bangladesh, claiming some valuable points in the World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle on Saturday. Sri Lanka needed just 28 minutes of the morning session of the fourth day to wrap up the entire series and secure their ninth-innings victory over Bangladesh. Left-arm ball tweaker Prabath Jayasuriya did the bulk of the damage with the spin traps and returned with figures of 5/56, his 12th five-wicket haul in Test format. Jayasuriya weaved his magic just three deliveries into his first over of the fourth day. Litton Das tried to negate the threat with forward defence but edged it to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis (14) behind the stumps. He stung Bangladesh again in his next over by having Nayeem Hasan stumped on 5(8). He completed his five-wicket haul by pouching a return catch to his right from Taijul Islam. Tharindu Ratnayake got into the thick of the action and trapped Ebadot Hossain in front of the stumps in the next over to pull the curtain down on Bangladesh's innings in just 34 deliveries into the morning session. Jayasuriya spun his best against Bangladesh and found his lost mojo after going wicketless in the first innings and striking once in Galle. In the second innings, a total of nine wickets fell to spin, with Tharindu and captain Dhananjaya de Silva sharing two apiece apart from Jayasuriya's five-for. Earlier in the Test, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat, just as they had done in the series opener in Galle. However, they failed to replicate their previous success and turned out to be pale shadows of their former self. They finished with 247 on the board, and in reply, Sri Lanka notched 458 on the board, courtesy of Pathum Nissanka's flamboyant 158(254), Dinesh Chandimal's resilient 93(153) and Kusal's quick-fire 84(87). Bangladesh attempted to conjure an inspired performance but fell short in their efforts. Jayasuriya tore through Bangladesh's batting order and forced them to pack on 133 in 44.2 overs, sealing a 1-0 series win for the hosts. Prabath Jayasuriya spins Sri Lanka to innings victory over Bangladesh in 2nd Test
Sri Lanka completed a massive win by an innings and 78 runs over Bangladesh in the 2nd and the final Test of the two-match series on Saturday, June 28 at Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo. Prabath Jayasuriya's 12th five-wicket haul helped the hosts win the series by 1-0 as Bangladesh capitulated for 133 in the second Dhananjaya de Silva-led side could smell victory late on Day 3 as they left Bangladesh reeling at 115/6 at stumps after Tharindu Ratnayake got Mehidy Hasan Miraz (11 off 16) lbw in the last over of the day. It didn't take long for Jayasuriya to get into the act on Day 4 as he added to his overnight tally of two wickets by getting Litton Das (14) caught behind the stumps by wicketkeeper Kusal left-arm spinner struck again in the next over as he outfoxed Nayeem Hasan, who was made to drag his foot outside the batting crease and Mendis wasted no time in dislodging the bails to pile on the misery on Bangladesh. There was no stopping Jayasuriya as he further got rid of Taijul Islam in his third over the day and completed his five-wicket haul. Ratnayake (2/19) hit the final nail in the coffin by dismissing Ebadot Hossain lbw for 6 (7) as Bangladesh got all out for 133 in 44.2 De Silva (2/13) and Asitha Fernando (1/22) were also amongst the wickets as Sri Lanka began the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle 2025-27 with a series win. Pathum Nissanka was adjudged Player of the Match for his magnificent innings of 158 in the first innings, laced with 19 fours. He was also adjudged Player of the Series, for finishing as the highest run scorer of the two-match rubber with 369 runs from three innings at an average of 123 with two centuries to his earlier scored 187 in the first innings of the drawn first Test in Galle. Meanwhile, after losing the series, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from his position. After Bangladesh posted 247 in their first innings, opener Pathum Nissanka scored 158 in a player-of-the-match performance, aided by Dinesh Chandimal (93) and Kusal Mendis (84) as Sri Lanka secured a commanding 211-run lead with a total of 458. Anamul Haque (19) tried to give Bangladesh a fast start in the second innings but fell to Asitha Fernando (1-22), while his opening partner Shadam Islam (12) mistimed a cover drive and got caught just three balls later as Jayasuriya (5-56) took his first wicket of the match. De Silva (2-13) trapped fellow skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, who scored twin centuries in the first test, with a leg before wicket dismissal to leave the visitors reeling at 70-4. "Very disappointing after how we finished the first Test, the way this one went," Shanto said. "We had opportunities but... always took easy options and made mistakes while batting." Mushfiqur Rahim (26), Bangladesh's other centurion in the previous match, was the next to fall as he was bowled by Jayasuriya, kicking off a collapse where Bangladesh lost their last five wickets in less than 11 overs.
