Sri Lanka spinners leave Bangladesh on verge of crushing defeat
Spinners Dhananjaya de Silva and Prabath Jayasurya rounded off another dominant day for Sri Lanka yesterday, taking two wickets each to leave them on the brink of a crushing innings victory over Bangladesh in the second Test.
By close of play on the third day at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, the visitors had slumped to 115-6 in their second innings, still 96 runs away from making Sri Lanka bat again.
Bangladesh started their second innings with a daunting deficit of 211 after Kusal Mendis's forthright 84 had taken the Sri Lanka first innings to 458 all out earlier in the day.
All seven batters so far in the Bangladesh second innings made it into double figures but only Mushfiqur Rahim made it beyond 20, making 26 before being beaten all ends up by Jayasuriya.
With only four wickets in hand, it will be a tough ask of the Bangladesh lower order to see off the Sri Lanka spinners, who have been gaining plenty of turn, from wrapping up the Test and the two-match series. The first Test ended in a draw.
Sri Lanka batter Kamindu Mendis said that the 'wicket is spinning now from both ends and its not easy for the batters'.
'We will look to wrap this up quickly,' he said after the day's play. Earlier, leading from the front, skipper De Silva dealt twin blows with his off-spin in the evening session yesterday. He had Mominul Haque (15) caught at first slip before trapping his opposite number Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) leg before.
Left-arm spinner Jayasuriya, under pressure to keep his spot after a lean patch, also responded in style with a probing spell. He struck with the new ball, removing Shadman Islam (12) caught behind, and then bowled Mushfiqur.
The early part of the day belonged to Kusal Mendis who hammered a rapid 84 off 87 balls, with eight fours and two sixes, when it looked as though the Sri Lanka first innings was faltering.

England bowler Cook to make Test debut against Zimbabwe
Sam Cook will make his England debut in this week's Test against Zimbabwe, while fellow fast bowler Josh Tongue features for the first time in two years. Cook's place in the England team at Trent Bridge on Thursday is a reward for a sustained spell as one of county cricket's most consistent wicket-takers with Essex. The 27-year-old's 227 County Championship wickets are the most by any seamer over the last five years. Cook's 321 first-class wickets have come at an average of only 19.85.

Rising star Rew called up to England squad for Zimbabwe Test
Somerset young gun James Rew was drafted into the England squad yesterday for the upcoming one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Nottingham starting on May 22. The 21-year-old, one of the most promising batsmen in the English game, replaces Jordan Cox, who suffered an abdominal injury while scoring a century in Essex's County Championship defeat by Somerset on Sunday. Cox, 24, appeared to be in England's squad for the fourday Test as a spare batter, but the injury is the latest unlucky setback in his career. He was set to make his Test debut last November in New Zealand but broke a thumb in practice before the series opener. This is the first senior England call-up for Rew, the youngest Englishman to score 10 firstclass hundreds since batting great Denis Compton. Rew has an outstanding domestic record, with his 45 firstclass appearances seeing him score more than 2,600 runs at an average of 43.35. In this season's First Division of the County Championship alone, Rew is currently averaging 54.21 with the bat, including a highest score of 152. The left-hander, who keeps wicket, also made a match-winning 116 against Essex. Rew toured Australia with the second-string England Lions during the northern hemisphere winter and was a member of the England team that reached the ICC Under-19 World Cup final in 2022.
