Katie Thurston Gives Candid Look at Being in ‘Medically Induced Menopause' at 34 Amid Cancer Battle

Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston is opening up about a rarely discussed side effect of her stage IV breast cancer battle. 'What it's like to have hot flashes due to medically induced menopause,' Thurston, 34, wrote via her Instagram Stories on Sunday, July 20, sharing a screenshot of her Apple Health chart. Per a screenshot, Thurston spent eight hours and 54 minutes in bed, but she was only asleep for just over six hours. 'I have the option to add a prescription to the routine of meds I'm on, but tbh I'm just simply scared,' Thurston wrote in her caption. 'Every added pill comes with a new risk for side effects. But, I might be reaching my breaking point when it comes to quality of life.' Katie Thurston Details How Intimacy With Husband Jeff Arcuri Has Changed Since Breast Cancer Battle She continued, 'I'm always tired and uncomfortable.' Thurston was diagnosed with breast cancer in February, later discovering that the malignant tissue had spread to her liver, which elevated her diagnosis to stage IV. In order to adequately treat her specific type of cancer, doctors had to put her body into early menopause. 'Slept like s*** because I'm now in medically induced menopause, which means I get hot flashes,' she said in a social media video posted in May. 'Tonight I have to be social so I figured I would ease into that by being social with you guys during the day. In the meantime, show you kind of what a normal day looks like for me.' She added at the time, 'My lips have been chapped for what feels like two weeks straight. And so it's this game of, like, catch-up and trying to just make sure I get enough water. Which I was already bad at before medication and now it's like a true task every day to force myself to consume water. So, good morning!' Before Thurston went into menopause, she did a round of in vitro fertilization and froze embryos. 'I'm basically putting my ovaries into a temporary menopausal state (I like to say hibernation) to protect them from chemo,' Thurston said in a March Instagram update. 'It will also reduce estrogen production, which is particularly important in hormonereceptor-ER+/PR+ breast cancer as estrogen can fuel cancer growth.' A Timeline of Former Bachelorette Katie Thurston's Breast Cancer Battle: From Diagnosis to Treatment Thurston and her husband, Jeff Arcuri, also plan to use a surrogate to carry any future children down the line. Us Weekly exclusively confirmed earlier in March that the pair tied the knot. 'We were wanting to plan a wedding and there's a lot of emotions that come in with chemo and the impact and the health and we don't know what the next year looks like,' Thurston told Us. 'And one night he said, 'I want to show you that I still love you and that I'm here to stay. I'll get married to you tomorrow.' We flew our parents in from Michigan and Washington State. We got our marriage license and a friend is just gonna marry us.'

Bachelorette star Katie Thurston gets emotional as she details devastating breast cancer symptoms

Bachelorette star Katie Thurston has shared a heartbreaking update about her Stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis. She posted an Instagram Reel detailing her daily struggles living with the gruesome disease. The 34-year-old had no family history of cancer when she was diagnosed on February 13 after discovering a painful lump in her breast. In her latest video, she got emotional as she spoke about the devastating symptoms she has endured, which included memory and hair loss. 'I wanted to do weekly check-ins that are just like uncut, raw emotions of like whatever comes to my mind,' she detailed in the Reel on June 1 - National Cancer Survivors Day. In March, just one week after her wedding to comedian Jeff Arcuri, 36, Katie revealed that the cancer had spread to her liver, taking her from Stage 3 to Stage 4. During her new Reel, the former Bachelorette revealed she had just finished her second month of treatment. 'If you're asking how long treatment is, technically forever. I am optimistic about medical advancements in the future. Fingers crossed as a Stage 4 girly,' she shared. Katie, who wore a pink New York Yankees hat during the video, added: 'My hair is coming out in an unnatural amount of clumps. Working on that.' She also said her treatments have been causing her to 'lose her memory.' Katie detailed that she was going through customs after a recent vacation with her husband and struggled to remember where they had visited. '[They asked], "Where are you coming from?" And I looked at them and I was like, "I don't remember. I don't remember,"' she recalled with tears in her eyes. 'Jeff and I got in a, not an argument, but you know, a little disagreement. I was like, "This has happened before," and he's like, '"When?" I was like, "I don't know, but I know it has."' She added: 'We're able to laugh about it now. But yeah cancer is s**t.' 'Sometimes I'm like, "Stop feeling bad for yourself," but then other times I'm like, "No, you're allowed to feel bad for yourself. Cancer f**king sucks,'' she said. 'Right now I'm at the process of my treatment where I have to make big decisions on how to treat my liver.' Katie revealed that she had decided on histotripsy to treat her liver, which uses ultrasound waves to treat tumors. She added: 'Every day I'm alive, I'm a survivor. So go me, I guess.' The Bachelorette also shared that the treatment that was supposed to put her into medically-induced menopause didn't work. 'Got my period, that's not supposed to happen,' she explained. She explained that she is switching medication, but if that doesn't work, 'I might have to get my ovaries taken out. Not ideal.' Katie concluded: 'The vacation was nice. Now I'm back at it, again, in New York City, trying to live my best life as a f**king cancer patient.' 'Sorry - I'm not gonna edit that out,' she said about swearing, which she bleeped out, 'I want this just to be my truth.' Katie was a bank marketing manager when she first competed for the heart of Bachelor #25 Matt James in 2021. She scored her Bachelorette spin-off where she romanced fiancé Blake Moynes for six months and John Hersey for seven months.

US reality star Katie Thurston diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 34

Katie Thurston has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The 34-year-old reality star - who got engaged to comedian Jeff Arcuri last September - took to social media on Saturday (15.02.25) to reveal that she is suffering from the disease and her Valentine's Day plans had been thwarted as she had to make logistical arrangements for her treatment. She wrote on Instagram: "Life update: I have breast cancer. "Yesterday I saw all the couples post their Valentine's Day celebrations. I felt envious if I'm being honest. Jeff took me to Hawaii and after, we were going to travel the world before planting roots together in NYC finally. But instead, my Vday was spent coordinating a place to live as I have to go back to LA for more testing and treatment. "I used my morning to figure out insurance for NYC and laws on preexisting conditions. I scheduled appointments for another biopsy, fertility, mental health, surgery, as well as meeting with my team to discuss the overall treatment plan, which will include chemo." The former 'Bachelorette' star went through a "range of emotions" in the weeks leading up to her diagnosis, but now wants to use her platform to help raise awareness of breast cancer and is ready to "fight" the disease. She added: "I experienced a range of emotions over the past two weeks. Despair. Anger. Sadness. Denial. And then strength. Purposeful. Ready. I cried a lot. I tried to even make a video instead of this post and couldn't. "But one thing I did early on was search other stories like mine. Other young women with breast cancer. Invasive ductal carcinoma. Mastectomy. Pregnancy after breast cancer. All of their stories helped. So I intend to be the same for others. This is day one of sharing and is going to be a long one. This first step of acceptance of my reality was the hardest. But I am ready to fight this." Katie concluded her message by thanking her husband-to-be for his constant support and admitted that she has no idea how she would cope without him. She said: "And I saved the best for last. To my extraordinary husband to be @jarcuri - I don't know how I'd do this without you. The selfless love that you smother me in is beyond anything I imagined I'd be blessed with. I love you to the fullest in this lifetime and the next."
