Welshpool High School put in special measures by Estyn
Welshpool High School has been put in special measures after its most recent inspection by Estyn. Powys County Council confirmed that senior education officers are working with staff after 'Estyn inspectors were of the opinion that special measures are required for the school'. In their report Estyn inspectors criticised standards at Welshpool High School and said that 'the quality of teaching is too variable'. Inspectors said: 'In half of lessons, shortcomings in teaching result in pupils not making the progress they are capable of. 'Teachers in these lessons often lack high expectations, provide insufficiently challenging activities, and fail to adapt their teaching to support pupils with weaker skills. 'Teachers, in general, do not provide enough opportunities for pupils to develop their Welsh language skills. 'Additionally, written feedback in a minority of cases lacks precision and does not effectively support improvement.' Estyn also raised concerns about the standard of leadership at the school, how it relates to teaching standards and support for lower income families. The report added: 'Despite leaders' commitment to raising the achievement of all pupils, over time leadership has had insufficient impact on important aspects such as the quality of teaching and skills development. 'Whilst whole-school attendance is slowly improving, the attendance of pupils eligible for free school meals in particular, is of concern. 'Senior leaders support the headteacher, but their work is not monitored or evaluated well enough. 'Furthermore, leadership responsibility is not evenly distributed and too often overlaps leading to unclear lines of accountability.' Cllr Pete Roberts, Powys County Council's cabinet member for a learning Powys, said: "Today I share the disappointment that everyone associated with Welshpool High School is experiencing. "This Estyn inspection report provides a clear and honest assessment of the challenges the school is facing and offers vital guidance on the steps needed to bring about meaningful improvement. "We are committed to working closely with the school's senior leadership team to address these challenges. Together, we will focus on the recommendations outlined by Estyn, building on the school's existing strengths while tackling the areas that require urgent attention. "This marks the beginning of a determined improvement journey for the school and its community." Jeff Johnson, Chair of Governors at Welshpool High School, accepted the finding of the report and said: "While being disappointed by some of the content of the Estyn report we recognise this as an opportunity to continue our journey down a road of improvement.

Hearst buys parent company of Dallas Morning News, expanding Texas footprint
Hearst announced Thursday that it was expanding its presence in Texas with the acquisition of DallasNews Corp., the parent company of the Dallas Morning News. Shareholders at the publicly traded DallasNews will receive $14 per share, valuing the deal at nearly $75 million, the Dallas Morning News reported. The Dallas Morning News will join the company's Hearst Newspapers division, the company said, which publishes 28 dailies and 50 weeklies, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Houston Chronicle and Times Union in Albany, N.Y. The Dallas Morning News, one of the largest newspapers in Texas, has served the Dallas-Fort Worth area for 140 years and won nine Pulitzer Prizes. The acquisition also includes Medium Giant, a marketing firm also owned by DallasNews. The marketing firm will ' complement Hearst Newspapers' agency level services,' the company said in a statement. 'Hearst Newspapers is committed to supporting The Dallas Morning News' continued success through smart investments in their digital strategy, compelling journalism and expanded audience reach,' Jeff Johnson, president of Hearst Newspapers, said in a statement. The acquisition was expected to close in the next few months, Hearst said. Hearst was also reportedly a bidder for the Santa Rosa Press Democrat this spring but that publication, and six others in the North Bay, was purchased by Alden Capital, an investment firm that has been criticized for reducing the number of journalists in its newsrooms.

Quantum Fiber experts answer developer and builder questions about deploying high-speed internet
Reliable and high-speed internet connectivity is a crucial aspect of modern living. For single-family home community developers and builders, understanding the benefits and requirements of fiber internet can help enhance property values and meet the demands of tech-savvy homeowners. We asked the Quantum Fiber Connected Communities team of experts to share what questions they frequently answer about fiber technology and working with an internet service provider (ISP). What are builders and developers responsible for in the installation of fiber services? Jeff Johnson, director of sales, West region: Every build is slightly different but we will have a detailed statement of work that will map out the installation. Fiber internet companies have streamlined the process to minimize the workload for builders and developers, and typically there is very little cost involved. However, developers will still need to help ensure a smooth installation by including their ISP in early design and preconstruction planning meetings and clearly communicating any changes to the construction plans. The goal is for residents to enjoy fast, reliable fiber internet service from the day they move in, and proper coordination and communication are key to making that happen. Are there any upfront costs for fiber agreements? Sarah Jordan, director of sales, East region: There are typically options where there's no upfront capital, depending on the type of agreement that you enter into with an ISP. It could be a shared marketing agreement, an exclusive marketing agreement, or a bulk agreement. There are also options where you can put your own capital down and amortize the rest of it over the course of the contract. So, the answer depends on what's best for your community, but fiber can often be more cost-effective than you may think. Is fiber an eco-friendly and sustainable technology? Tony St. Pierre, marketing director: Fiber is one of the fastest internet technologies on the market and its long lifespan and future-ready capabilities make it a sustainable connectivity solution. The Quantum Fiber network is passive, meaning it limits our use of electricity to maintain our network. Our instant internet solution does not require a truck roll for customers to get activated, which limits carbon emissions. As residents increasingly prefer sustainable options, fiber can set eco-friendly communities apart from the competition. How does fiber internet impact property value? Dan O'Connell, vice president of consumer sales: It's important to know that a fiber infrastructure helps generate long-term value and can help make properties more competitively attractive. This requires an ISP partner with industry intelligence, foresight, and adaptability to design a network that meets current and future needs. According to a 2023 consumer study by Fiber Broadband Association (FBA) and RVA LLC Market Research and Consulting, fiber-optic internet is the preferred connectivity technology for nearly two-thirds of surveyed internet users, and not having fiber internet can negatively impact property value. The study showed that on average, U.S. consumers would require a 4.9% reduction in price for a non-fiber-connected single-family home. Why is fiber a good fit for master-planned communities? Melonie Hooper, operations director: The benefits of fiber broadband go far and wide. Consider how residents rely on a fast internet connection for remote work and home entertainment. By the end of 2025, the number of connected devices is expected to reach 75 billion, which will open a new world of modern living. Without a robust connection, these devices can suffer from interruptions and latency issues. A fiber-optic network can easily handle Internet of Things (IoT) devices — including home automation systems, security systems, smart appliances, and more. As the demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, incorporating fiber internet into single-family home developments can offer numerous benefits. By staying informed and understanding the advantages of fiber technology, developers and builders can make smart decisions that will benefit their communities and residents for years to come. Resources for Tampa Bay seniors, others needing hurricane evacuation help
Among the Tampa Bay locals who were killed during last year's historic hurricane season, many shared a tragic trait in common: They were over 60 years old. Most lived in mandatory evacuation zones but didn't leave. Some also had mobility issues, such as needing walkers to get around. Jeff Johnson, the state director for AARP Florida, which advocates for people over the age of 50, said that in addition to physical hurdles, older adults also may have a harder time, emotionally, leaving their homes and not knowing what it'll look like when they come back. After living somewhere for decades, possibly filled with items that represent friends and family who have passed away, the process can be difficult. But it's important to heed mandatory evacuation calls. Johnson noted that even if residents think they're safe from storm surge on an upper floor of a condo high-rise, they need to consider what it would be like to live there without any power or water for days, including if the elevators go out in tall buildings. Some people of all ages might need help evacuating, too, because they lack transportation or the financial means to book a hotel room. For people who need help evacuating ahead of a hurricane, there are resources available. Residents who rely on medication, oxygen or power can add their names to the state's special needs registry before a hurricane looms. That registry, run by the Florida Department of Health in coordination with county governments, is at Pinellas County: County officials encourage residents with medical needs, who lack transportation, or need help walking or getting out of bed to register for the county's special needs program. Residents can ask their home health care provider about registering or do so online at You can also request a form by calling Pinellas County Emergency Management at 727-464-3800. Hillsborough County: Special needs residents should register at the state health department website above, according to county officials. The Hillsborough County Hurricane Evacuation Assessment Tool at includes real-time shelter locations, evacuation zones and HART bus evacuation routes. For assistance, the county's main information line is 813-272-5900. Residents can also call the storm information line when emergency staff are activated: 833-427-8676. Pasco County: Residents with special needs can find information on registering, plus a short video on how to register, at Kevin Guthrie, the director of Florida's Division of Emergency Management, said residents can also call 800-729-3413 with questions on evacuation orders or for assistance getting out. Times staff writer Justin Garcia and Times/Herald staff writer Romy Ellenbogen contributed to this report. A version of this story was previously published in the Tampa Bay Times.
