Friends star to lead cast of TV show based on 'best autobiography ever written'

A 'heartbreaking' and 'hilarious' memoir by a Nickelodeon child star is about to be turned into an Apple TV series - and a Friends legend will star. I'm Glad My Mom Died, released in 2022, was penned by Jennette McCurdy who shot to fame in 2007's iCarly after a number of smaller roles. She later starred in spin-off show Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande. The book quickly rose up the charts following its release with McCurdy praised for her candid and witty writing. The autobiography goes into great detail about the young star's abuse at the hands of her mother and the trauma she endured in her pursuit of an acting career. "I feel I didn't have the tools, language, or support necessary to speak up for myself back then, so this book is a way for me to not only honor that experience and give voice to my former self, but hopefully to encourage young people to speak up for themselves in environments where they may be conditioned to just 'play ball' and 'be a good sport'." Now a 10-part series inspired by the memoir has been announced by Apple TV. Described as a dramedy, the series will star The Morning Show and Friends legend Jennifer Aniston in an as-yet undisclosed role. Aniston is also co-producing the project, while McCurdy will write, produce and showrun. Fans have flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the announcement, with one penning: "Jennette's book was so heartbreaking and brutally honest but essential reading. Fingers crossed this show does the book justice." A second fan shared: "This is going to be a lot to watch but I'm happy for Jennette if this is what she truly wants to do." Meanwhile a third added: "I don't like that it's 'inspired by' and not 'based on'. I hope they don't mess up the story." Avid readers have given the autobiography a near-perfect score on book review site Goodreads, and the title was even crowned 'Readers' Favourite Memoir & Autobiography' in the 2022 Goodreads Choice Awards, alongside its status as a New York Times bestseller. A release date is yet to be announced for I'm Glad My Mom Died

Jennette McCurdy Memoir Series Casts Jennifer Aniston

This just in: Jennette McCurdy's 2022 memoir, titled I'm Glad My Mom Died, is getting an onscreen adaptation of sorts. Apple TV+ revealed this week that Apple Studios is producing a new 10-episode series inspired by Jennette's book, which was released in 2022. The upcoming series has been described as a 'dramedy' that 'will centre on the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress in a hit kids' show, and her narcissistic mother,' who is set to be played by none other than Jennifer Aniston. In case you need a quick refresher, Jennette's memoir, which bagged the top spot on the New York Times bestseller list upon its release, was incredibly shocking and heartbreaking. Jennette shot to fame as a child actor, starring in popular Nickelodeon series iCarly and Sam and Cat. Her book chronicled her experience in the spotlight at such a young age, detailing her experience with addiction and disordered eating, as well as — as the title suggests — her complicated past relationship with her late mother, Debra McCurdy. You can find a more detailed breakdown of Jennette's memoir here, and we'll keep you posted as more details on the new series unfold.

This Friends actor is set to star in I'm Glad My Mom Died – read the book behind the series

Adults of a certain generation will instantly recognise Jennette McCurdy. The child star played Cat in the Nickelodeon show iCarly and appeared alongside Ariana Grande in Sam & Cat. But it was her 2022 memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died, which revealed a darker side to her fame. In the boldly titled book, she recounts her dysfunctional childhood of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of her narcissistic mother. Expertly balancing humour and heartache, the memoir lasted more than 80 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and garnered critical acclaim. Unsurprisingly, the rights to the book were snapped up by Apple TV. Now, it's been announced that Jennifer Aniston is set to star in the 10-episode series inspired by McCurdy's memoir. While other details are thin on the ground, Apple TV describes the upcoming show as a 'heartbreaking and hilarious recounting of Jennette McCurdy's struggles as a former child actor while dealing with her overbearing, domineering mother. 'The dramedy will centre on the codependent relationship between an 18-year-old actress in a hit kids' show, and her narcissistic mother who relishes in her identity as 'a starlet's mother.'' The adaptation will likely stay true to its source material, with McCurdy signed on as co-writer, executive producer and showrunner alongside Ari Katcher. Excitingly, Aniston and Bad Sisters' Sharon Horgan are also listed as executive producers. With the rest of the cast yet to be announced, it could be years until the TV adaptation arrives on our screens. In the meantime, here's everything you need to know about McCurdy's memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died. Part exposé on the perils of child fame and part reckoning with the relationship with her mother, I'm Glad My Mom Died secured a spot in my review of the best memoirs and autobiographies. The provocative opening of the book sees McCurdy at her mother Debra's hospital bedside. She's got cancer and is in a coma - in a bid to wake her, McCurdy whispers, 'Mommy, I am... so skinny right now.' What follows is the Nickelodeon star recounting her dysfunctional childhood with her cruel and narcissistic mother, who failed at her own acting career. Despite her comic roles on screen, behind the scenes, McCurdy was depressed and anxious, suffering from disordered eating and alcohol abuse in her teens. In the book, McCurdy reveals how her mother forced her to diet and wouldn't let her shower alone until she was 18 years old. It wasn't until her mother died in 2013 that she understood the abuse she had suffered. This could be a depressingly sad memoir in anyone else's hands, but McCurdy's skill for storytelling and dark humour balances the bleakness of her story. Ultimately, it's about abuse masquerading as love. McCurdy's narration of the audiobook adds further depth to her story – it's well worth a listen.

'Friends' Actress Tapped for Explosive Memoir Series, Fans Expect a 'Stellar Performance' Given Uncanny Real-Life Parallel

'Friends' Actress Tapped for Explosive Memoir Series, Fans Expect a 'Stellar Performance' Given Uncanny Real-Life Parallel originally appeared on Parade. Hollywood icon will star in Apple TV+'s upcoming series adaptation of Jennette McCurdy's explosive memoir, I'm Glad My Mom Died. The casting announcement has sent ripples through the entertainment world and social media, with fans immediately drawing parallels between Aniston's own well-documented relationship with her late mother and the series' deeply personal subject matter. McCurdy's memoir, which candidly details her tumultuous life as a child star on Nickelodeon's iCarly and her fraught, often abusive relationship with her mother, has captivated millions since its release. The book's raw honesty and challenging themes quickly made it a bestseller. Now, with Aniston stepping into a lead role, anticipation for the series has reached a fever pitch, particularly among those who have read McCurdy's powerful account. Reactions on Reddit highlight both the book's impact and the perceived suitability of Aniston for the project. "No one else would be allowed to make her story into a movie," one user commented, acknowledging McCurdy's involvement in the adaptation. They added, "And personally I'm not surprised, it's riveting and sad and there are lots of tragic biopics that get made. Movies like this do well." The raw emotional depth of the source material resonated deeply, with another fan sharing, "oof, this one's going to be a tough watch. reading it was hard enough. i'm firmly seated though!" Many online echoed the sentiment that Aniston's personal history makes her uniquely qualified for the role. "I have actually read the book Aniston's mom wrote about their relationship and all I can say is that Jennifer knows first hand what it's like to grow up with a mother who is a narcissist. I think she will do it justice," a Redditor wrote, referencing Nancy Dow's memoir about her relationship with Jennifer. Another added, "With Jen's own relationship with her mom….this is gonna be a stellar performance." The consensus among many is that Aniston's lived experience with a "tumultuous relationship with her emotionally abusive mother, that ended in no contact," will allow her to deliver a "fantastic" and nuanced performance. Fans also recalled Aniston's previous roles, noting her capacity to portray complex mother figures. "She was a great narcissistic mom in Dumplin, she really sold it and sold the redemption arch of the story. I'm actually excited to see her in this!" one comment highlighted. While some initially "did not picture her as the mother," many now believe she "can do it well." The series promises to be a powerful and potentially heart-wrenching viewing experience. "This book was an absolutely brutal read. I hope Jeanette makes bank," a fan expressed, reflecting the intense emotional journey the story presents. The casting of Aniston, a beloved figure with a deep understanding of the themes involved, suggests an adaptation poised for critical acclaim. "Best tactical move Jen has made in years," one user proclaimed, adding, "I'd just engrave the Emmy already," signaling high expectations for her performance and potential awards recognition.
