Shedeur Sanders has already shown his true character with the Cleveland Browns and it had nothing to do with football
Shedeur Sanders has already shown his true character with the Cleveland Browns and it had nothing to do with football originally appeared on A to Z Sports. The Cleveland Browns have entered their second week of training camp, and today marks the first time the team will put on pads to start the week. Much of the early camp conversation has centered around the quarterback competition. News recently broke that Kenny Pickett is dealing with an injury, which opens the door for more reps to be distributed among Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders. Speaking of Sanders, he made a strong impression this past week — and it had nothing to do with football. Browns linebacker Jerome Baker was in the middle of a press conference when Sanders approached the podium for his scheduled media availability. Naturally, given Sanders' popularity, many members of the media began to shift their attention toward him. However, the rookie quarterback refused to begin his session until Baker had finished, even though he wasn't obligated to wait. 'It's a respect thing. You know, I know a lot of people want the content. I know I'm a producer, so. Nah, I never want to make anybody feel any type of way about anything,' Sanders said. 'So, it was important that he gets everything he needs to say out, and everybody captures what he has — and then now I'm here.' This moment stood out, especially considering that Sanders faced character questions during the pre-draft process. His decision to wait until Baker was done speaking is the kind of gesture that can earn the respect of veterans in the locker room. Cleveland's rookie quarterback may see increased opportunities this week, possibly even with the starters. If he approaches those reps with the same level of professionalism he displayed during Baker's press conference, it could go a long way toward building trust within the organization. Cleveland Browns training camp Day 3: Live updates, injuries, news from 1st open practice
BEREA — The fans will get their first look at the 2025 Cleveland Browns on July 25. After two days of full-squad training camp practices, the Browns will have their first one open to the fans. The team is scheduled to take the field at 2 p.m. The open practice is one of eight the Browns will have in training camp. It's the first of back-to-back days with open practices as well. Follow along here for news, notes and comments to emerge from Day 3 of Cleveland Browns training camp. Jerome Baker recalls first Browns jersey: Johnny Manziel Linebacker Jerome Baker is getting a chance to return to his hometown to play. The Browns signed the Cleveland native and Benedictine High School and Ohio State product in March. The 28-year-old Baker was asked Friday if he had a favorite player while he was growing up in Cleveland. "I'm not gonna say I have a favorite," Baker said. "It's funny. So when Johnny Manziel was here, he was probably the first jersey I ever bought and I had, so shout out to him." Manziel, the former Heisman Trophy winner and first-round draft pick who flamed out after two seasons, would've arrived in Cleveland as Baker was going into his senior year at Benedictine. At that time, Manziel Mania was sweeping the Browns' fanbase. Of course, Baker is much like most Browns fans of the current era. He owns the jersey of a failed quarterback "Yeah. I wouldn't say failed," Baker said. "I would just say it just didn't work out. Yeah, I definitely still got that jersey." Wide receiver Cedric Tillman leaves practice with injury Wide receiver Cedric Tillman was shaken up on the final play of a modified seven-on-seven red-zone period. After an incomplete pass thrown to him near the goal post, he remained down for a bit with trainers looking at his lower left leg. Tillman eventually walked off the field with a member of the training staff and went to the locker room. There was no official word immediately after practice on the nature of the injury. Kevin Stefanski recognizes Lorain community after shooting of police officers Browns coach Kevin Stefanski took a moment at the start of his pre-practice availability Friday to express his feelings on the ambush of three Lorain police officers — Officers Phillip Wagner, Peter Gale and Brent Payne — which took place on July 23. Wagner died from his wounds on July 24. "I just want to acknowledge the people in Lorain, in our community that are hurting," Stefanski said. "Some senseless violence against our police officers. Officer Phillip Wagner, who lost his life in this. Two officers were injured, Officer Peter Gale, Brent Payne. We are thinking about the community in Lorain. We're thinking about everybody in law enforcement that keeps us safe. It's tough, tough news and I know they're going through it and I just want them to know we're thinking of them as they go through this. They're certainly in our thoughts and prayers. I just want to make sure that we acknowledge that before we get started." Running back Jerome Ford 'close' to return to practice Running back Jerome Ford remains sidelined with a "minor" injury. Coach Kevin Stefanski said the running back wasn't not going to practice on July 25, but was "progressing" and was "close" to a return. Ford was seen working with a training on the field a couple of hours before practice. Michael Woods II not back at practice after injury Browns wide receiver Michael Woods II missed the second training camp practice due to a hand injury. However, coach Kevin Stefanski said the 2022 sixth-round pick was possibly going to be back on the field for day 3 on July 25. Turns out, Woods missed his second practice in a row. He was one of three to not be on the field, along with guard Tevan Jenkins and cornerback Tony Brown II. Cleveland Browns sign wide receiver Winston Wright The Browns added another young body to the wide receiver room prior to their third training camp practice. They signed rookie Winston Wright to a contract. Wright, 5-foot-10, 192 pounds, played the last two seasons at East Carolina. He spent time at West Virginia (2019-21), Florida State (2022-23) and East Carolina (2023-24). His college career spanned 49 career games. He recorded 187 receptions for 1,930 yards and 18 touchdowns. Veteran LB Jordan Hicks announces his retirement Veteran linebacker Jordan Hicks announced his retirement after 10 years in the NFL on Instagram on July 25. Hicks, 33, had not been at the Browns' first two days of training camp for reasons that had been listed as "personal." 'After 23 years of playing football, I'm officially retiring from the NFL," Hicks said on Instagram. "Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly it showed me who I am outside the game. "I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what I accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it. To my teammates, coaches, fans, and most importantly my family.. thank you for your unwavering support throughout this journey. I'm looking forward to this next season of life and all that it brings."I walk away with peace knowing I gave football all I had, and that the best is yet to come. Forever Grateful,Jordan Hicks" The West Chester, Ohio, native who played at Lakota West High School and the University of Texas was originally drafted in the third round of the 2015 draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Browns, with whom he signed a two-year deal in 2024, were his fourth team, along with the Eagles (2015-18), Arizona Cardinals (2019-21) and Minnesota Vikings (2022-23). Hicks' retirement, coupled with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah being ruled out for the season due to the neck injury he suffered last season, leaves the Browns' linebacking room extremely thin in experience. They signed Cleveland native and eight-year pro Jerome Baker in March, who joins seven-year pro Devin Bush as the only linebackers on the roster with more than two seasons of experience. Browns' Shedeur Sanders ‘keeping the focus where it needs to be' while awaiting an opportunity
On the practice field, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders is doing more waiting than throwing — at least in competitive team-drill situations. It's been sort of the same on the periphery, too. When Sanders was escorted from the locker room to the team's training camp interview tent Friday morning, he chose to wait on linebacker Jerome Baker to finish his group interview rather than take to the empty podium opposite the veteran. Advertisement As arguably — but probably inarguably — the most popular fourth-string quarterback in early training camp history, Sanders seems comfortable with his new and at least semi-awkward place in Cleveland's remade and evolving quarterback situation. 'I had to wait until Jerome finished up back there,' Sanders told reporters. 'For sure, it's a respect thing. I know a lot of people want the content. I know I'm a producer, so I never want to make anybody feel any type of way about anything. So it was important that he gets everything he needs to say out, and everybody captures what he has. And now, I'm here.' In April, the Browns selected Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel late in the third round. That extended Sanders' surprisingly lengthy wait until Day 3 of the draft, when the Browns traded up 22 spots in the fifth round to select the former Colorado quarterback and add a fourth competitor to the league's least certain quarterback situation. Sometime in the next several weeks, there will, at the very least, be a temporary winner. The Browns have an extra first-round pick in next year's draft. And in what might be a transition year on several fronts, there are no guarantees with any of the four quarterbacks currently on the practice field. As was the case in the spring, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett are splitting most of the starter's reps. Gabriel is currently ahead of Sanders both when the Browns split into two fields to maximize reps and when the team is running through its early-practice drills. On each of the first two days, Sanders had to throw to an equipment manager during early drills because all of the team's available receivers had already taken their turns. Dating back to the spring, Sanders is the only one of the four who hasn't taken at least some reps with the team's No. 1 offense. He said he doesn't 'feel down or left out' about that because 'it's out of my control,' and he said that he's mostly focused on 'trying to maximize from a mental standpoint' as he waits his turn on the practice field and studies his craft in the meeting room. Advertisement Sanders got four plays Thursday to end the team's red zone 11-on-11 situation. An errant snap killed the first play, and an offside rusher blew up the second. The defense recorded a sack on the third, and another shaky snap preceded a handoff on the fourth. Life at the bottom of the depth chart can be anything but glamorous. 'I would say (I'm) just learning every day,' Sanders said. 'Of course, I'm learning different things. I know the opportunity will come, and whenever it comes, I want to be able to know the ins and outs and know the full everything. So I don't want to really make too many mistakes when it's my time.' Through two days of practice, all four Cleveland quarterbacks have taken nine reps in 7-on-7 settings. Sanders has taken 12 reps (seven called passes) in 11-on-11 settings, and three of those came in an opportunity period after the conclusion of full practice Thursday. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski wants to get the fullest and fairest evaluation of his quarterbacks, so he's been adding competitive periods to the practice schedule since the start of rookie minicamp in May. 'We're trying to maximize every minute we have with these young men and get them ready,' Stefanski said. 'I think Shedeur does a nice job of keeping the main thing the main thing. He's worked very hard in the building, in the meeting room, in the weight room. He's working hard and keeping his head down. 'Attention that comes with all this is great … but Shedeur does a great job of keeping the focus where it needs to be.' Now, the Browns are beginning the final phase of their quarterback competition while also preparing for the season ahead. Stefanski has scheduled joint practice sessions ahead of preseason games in Carolina and Philadelphia, and Friday marked the team's first camp practice open to fans. For the next four-plus weeks, every on-field part of the competition will be documented and, in some form, broadcast. Advertisement Sanders has long been comfortable with the spotlight. Since reporting to camp last week, though, he said he's been 'cut off from the world' with the exception of some phone calls with his former Colorado teammates. He's been busy with meetings, the playbook, film and trying to be as prepared as possible for his reps — whether they come one snap or four snaps at a time. 'When I get out there, I'm not thinking about (anything) external,' Sanders said. 'I'm thinking about more in the organization, thinking about getting the play calls, executing my job, doing what I've got to do.'

Jordan Hicks retires, leaving Browns with more concerns at linebacker
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns situation at linebacker became a bigger concern on Friday after Jordan Hicks announced his retirement. Hicks missed the first two days of training camp with what the team called a personal matter. The 33-year-old Hicks posted his retirement announcement on Instagram after 10 years in the league. 'Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly it showed me who I am outside the game,' Hicks said in his post. 'I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what l accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it.' Hicks played 12 games last season and was third on the team with 78 tackles. The Browns were already down one middle linebacker going into camp with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah out for the season with a neck injury. Hicks was a third-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015. He also played for Arizona and Minnesota before signing as an unrestricted free agent with Cleveland last year. 'I'm truly just happy for him, just to leave on your own terms, do it the way you want to do it. Just having a great career,' linebacker Jerome Baker said. Rookie Carson Schwesinger, the 33rd overall pick in April's draft, could move into Hick's starting spot. Nathaniel Watson was Hicks' backup at the end of last season. 'When you lose a player due to injury or retirement or whatever, there's opportunities that come up for younger players and in this day and age, young players play early at these positions," coach Kevin Stefanski said before the start of Friday's practice. "They may be counted on and that's why we're working so hard. That's why we're trying to be efficient with everything we do, maximize every rep and minute that we have with these young men to get them ready to play.' Devin Bush, one of the other starters at linebacker, could miss part of the season if he is suspended by the league for violations of the personal conduct policy. Bush was charged with simple assault and harassment after being arrested in May outside of Pittsburgh. ___ AP NFL:
