Kaizer Chiefs to face African giants Asante Kotoko in Toyota Cup showdown

Chiefs Marketing Director Jessica Motaung says the tournament is about celebrating African talent. 'We are proud to face Asante Kotoko… We want to grow our footprint in West Africa while creating an unforgettable experience for our fans.' The two sides last met in 2001 in the Vodacom Challenge, where Chiefs won on penalties following a goalless game. Tickets to the match at Moses Mabhida Stadium start from R80 on Open Tickets.

'Chiefs can't find themselves there again': Motaung makes promise

Kaizer Chiefs' Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, says the club should never find itself outside the top 8. In the past two seasons, Amakhosi has finished 10th and 9th in the Betway Premiership. This marks the first time the Soweto giants have failed to qualify for the top 8 in two consecutive seasons. This week, Amakhosi launched the 2025 Toyota Cup, where they will play Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko. Motaung said the club was working scenes to bring in more players for next season as Kaizer Chiefs look to bounce back. 'The market is competitive, and we have to be honest and say that the market is competitive. We have always been able to get players of stature, and that is something that we are doing all the time,' Motaung told KickOff. 'I know that the guys are working very hard behind the scenes to make that happen. Ninth and tenth place is not great for us, and that is part of the difficult conversation that we had to have,' she added. 'We cannot find ourselves there again.' 'We have to be fair in that there are always challenges for players, but I'm grateful for the players who have dedicated themselves to the Chiefs from the past and present. For me, I would say at Chiefs we work as a team, and we must be honest about the fact that sometimes things work out and at times they don't,' Motaung stated. 'I think the guys on the technical side are working very hard, and they have the support of the board and the chairman and all of us, even on the marketing side,' she added. 'It is just now that we have had a period of challenges, and it is great that we have won the Nedbank Cup. 'We need to be careful in saying we didn't have good players when those players won us the Nedbank Cup. We need to be grateful for the work that has been done, but certainly we are continuing to look at getting the right players.' Motaung did mention that new players will be revealed when Kaizer Chiefs arrive in the Netherlands next month for their pre-season training. Jessica Motaung addresses Kaizer Chiefs' transfer strategy amid marquee signing pressure

Speaking at Thursday's launch of the Toyota Cup — which will see Amakhosi face Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko at Moses Mabhida Stadium on July 26 — Motaung was confronted with more pressing matters. While the exhibition match is a marketing success, the bigger issue for supporters remains the lack of elite signings to lift the footballing side. Chiefs are coming off a bittersweet campaign — they lifted the Nedbank Cup, ending a decade-long trophy drought, but still slumped to ninth place in the league, underlining the inconsistency that has plagued the club for years. GEORGE LEBESE & BIBO The current Kaizer Chiefs players are not Chiefs material. We know what Chiefs used to be. Chiefs management is just signing for emergency purposes. No proper scouting. There are only 5 players who should be there: Lilelo,Cele, Tshabalala, Dortley. I… — Constitution First 🇿🇦 (@Constitution_94) June 25, 2025 Video Player is loading. Motaung, however, insists the club remains active in the chase for 'big players' and has not shifted from that stance. 'The market is competitive, and we have to be honest and say that the market is competitive,' she said. 'We have always been able to get players of stature and that is something we are doing all the time. I know that the guys are working very hard behind the scenes to make that happen.' Criticism has often been directed at the club's inability to attract names of the calibre that defined the Chiefs of the 2000s and early 2010s. But Motaung believes that recent signings — while not headline-grabbing — have delivered results, pointing to the Nedbank Cup triumph as proof. 'We need to be careful in saying we didn't have good players when those players won us the Nedbank Cup,' she added. Jessica provides update on latest Kaizer Chiefs signings

Kaizer Chiefs' Marketing and Commercial Director, Jessica Motaung, says a lot is being done behind the scenes to ensure that new signings join the squad during pre-season. Amakhosi players have returned to training after a month-long break. The team will travel to the Netherlands for their pre-season camp, where they will play several friendly matches. Although the club has parted ways with five players, no new signings have been announced by the Kaizer Chiefs management as of yet. Ethan Chislett, who spent most of his playing career in England, is believed to have signed with the Soweto giants. Speaking during the launch of the 2025 Toyota Cup, Motaung said new players would be part of the team that jets off to the Netherlands next month. 'The team is still busy with that, we still have another week to go,' she said as per iDiski Times . 'But certainly there's a lot of work being done. I am aware of players who are currently signing, so once that is all sorted out, if they are ready to travel to the Netherlands, they will come through. 'Obviously, there may be delays with paperwork and visas. Those are some of the things we may have to deal with. 'But we're certainly trying to bring the players who can come to the Netherlands and make sure that they are together. 'But certainly, even after that, we'll be having a lot of tight sessions to make sure people haven't been part of the tour, they'll be part of the additional preparations leading up to the Toyota club and also after that.' Jessica Motaung: Nasreddine Nabi is here, but Kaizer Chiefs will make the hard decisions to get back to the top

Kaizer Chiefs marketing director Jessica Motaung asked for patience from the fans on Thursday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix JESSICA Motaung says Kaizer Chiefs are not a mid-table team, and the club have been having hard conversations with regards to finding ways to moving up to the top, where they belong. Having finished out of the top eight in the past two seasons and only ending what has been a decade-long trophy drought by winning the past campaign's Nedbank Cup, the Amakhosi have lost their shine as the country's Glamour Boys. But Motaung, the club's marketing director and daughter of chairman Kaizer, says they are intent on changing all that in the upcoming campaign. 'Ninth and 10th (positions) is not great for us, and part of the hard conversations we've had is that we cannot find ourselves there (again),' Motaung told media at the club's Taung Village in Naturena, Johannesburg on Thursday during the launch of this year's Toyota Cup. Chiefs announced that they will be facing Ghana's Asante Kotoko at Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium on July 26 in a match that pits 'Africa's fallen giants' against each other. Like Chiefs, Kotoko have recently fallen on hard times and only finished third in the Ghanaian league. They too were, however, crowned Ghana's FA Cup champions, and will be going into the CAF Confederation Cup along with the Amakhosi. The two teams are not bothered by the possibility of meeting in the secondary continental inter-club competition, and are looking forward to using their clash as a way to kick-starting the upcoming campaign. Next Stay Close ✕ It would appear that part of the conversations Motaung spoke of are whether the club continue their relationship with coach Nasreddine Nabi, who was reported to be on his way out prior to leading Chiefs to that Nedbank Cup victory over defending champions Orlando Pirates. According to Motaung, though, Nabi is still their coach, and will be travelling with the club to their pre-season camp out in The Netherlands, where they will play a few matches. 'The coach is here and doing his work, so let's allow the process to unfold internally,' she responded to a question about the Tunisian technician and his relationship with Chiefs. 'There are reviews being done, and there are discussions right now about where we are going as a team. 'The vision is to ascend and take our rightful place in South African and African football, and the conversations are there about how to get there – and we will make the hard decisions to make sure we get there.' One of those hard decisions could well be to sever ties with Nabi, who is said to not be enjoying much support at the club. The other is for Chiefs to beef up their squad with quality players, and Motaung pleaded with the club's supporters to bear with them and await their official announcement on that score. 'First and foremost, we have to be fair. There are always challenges for players, and I am grateful for the players who dedicated themselves to Chiefs, from the past and present,' she said. 'Sometimes things work out, sometimes they don't. The technical team is working hard, and they have the support of the chairman. 'Every team goes through cycles and challenges. 'We are fortunate to have had years and years of success, and winning the Nedbank Cup has given us an opportunity to exhale. 'We are asking our supporters to be patient, and allow us to have our I's dotted and our T's crossed.
