'2 Dope Queens' Is on The 100 Best Podcasts of All Time

Comedy and Fiction For nearly three years in the late-2010s, BFF comedians Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams hosted 2 Dope Queens, the Webby Award-winning comedy podcast produced by WNYC Studios that tackled subjects like race, gender, and sex in hilarious ways. The unfiltered conversations the pair would have alongside guests, who ranged from comedian Michelle Buteau to former First Lady Michelle Obama, would focus, often very loosely, on a running topic like 'Hair' or 'Fifty Shades of Matthew McConaughey' or 'Hot Peen,' the title of a 2018 episode featuring Tituss Burgess in which they chatted about the men they lust after. The goal of the podcast, which grew out of their weekly live comedy show, was not only to make these thorny subjects feel less taboo, it was also to pass the mic to comedians and storytellers from marginalized groups—women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community—who did not often get the chance to appear on the late-night shows hosted by straight white men. 2 Dope Queens ' commitment to helping others feel heard resonated with listeners, who turned it into one of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of its time, spawning a series of HBO live specials, many of which were directed by frequent guest and bad advice giver Tig Notaro. By the time Robinson and Williams ended 2 Dope Queens in 2018, they had broken the podcast landscape wide open, giving way to an entire genre of shows that blend comedy, social commentary, and female friendship. Extremely dope.

‘Shrinking' star Michael Urie reacts to first Emmy nomination: ‘Wow, it was good'

Michael Urie got the best wake up call of his life. The actor was fast asleep when his phone began ringing and he soon learned he had been nominated for an Emmy for his role on Shrinking. "I was totally asleep. We had a night shoot last night. I went to bed at 4 a.m. My phone was buzzing and that's what woke me," he told Gold Derby. "I was like, 'Is it good news or is it condolences? What's happening?' And wow, it was good." More from Gold Derby Emmys 2025 nominations by the numbers: 9 surprising fun facts Kathy Bates aims to become the oldest Drama Actress winner in Emmys history, surpassing Glenn Close His nod for best supporting actor in a comedy series comes alongside the show's first-ever nomination for comedy series. Harrison Ford, who plays Paul Rhoades, a senior therapist struggling with Parkinson's disease, also earned his first Emmy Award nomination for his performance. The series garnered additional recognition, with Jason Segel nominated for Best Comedy Actor and Jessica Williams receiving a nomination for Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Urie will compete against Ford, Ike Barinholtz (The Studio), Colman Domingo, (The Four Seasons), Jeff Hiller, (Somebody Somewhere) Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear), and Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) After hearing the good news, Williams was one of the first people Urie connected with. "Jessica and I were FaceTiming and I was still in bed and I had a sleep mask," he says, adding that he is in awe of Williams' comedic timing. "Her brain has a line to God or something. She comes up with the funniest ad libs and so quickly. She's an incredibly skilled improviser and comedian." Urie says he's also learned a great deal from watching Ford on set. "He is a consummate actor. He's prepared. He always has an idea. He's always on time. He has this gruff persona, but it's not real. He's really actually a softie and he loves people and he loves talking to people. He's very curious. But the thing I've learned the most from him is how he interacts with the camera itself. He tells so many stories with his face and they're subtle," says Urie. On the show, Urie plays Brian, the funny best friend of Segel's character and he says he loves his character's imperfections the most. "He's a mess of a guy. He's lovable and has great love for people, but he's a narcissist and he is very self-centered and he knows it. He sort of rejects therapy even though he's surrounded by therapists all the time and he makes mistakes," he says. And while the show delivers plenty of laughs, it also tackles serious topics like mental health, Parkinson's disease and grief. Urie hopes by doing so, it will open up important conversations and encourages viewers to seek support when needed. "What I want people to get out of the show is the permission to ask for help—to go to those who love you or professionals if you have a problem, whether it's a medical problem or an emotional issue or just a personal problem with somebody. There are resources." Emmy On-Screen Diversity Takes A Hit With Acting & Hosting Nominations Down 18% From 2024

Twenty-eight actors and reality hosts from diverse backgrounds were recognized by the Television Academy with Emmy nominations on Tuesday, not only an 18% drop from last year's 34 but a near-low since 2019, when there were 26 non-Caucasian actors and hosts. At its highest, the most diverse year for actors and reality competition/talk show hosts was 2021 per Deadline stats with a massive 49 nominees. More from Deadline Primetime Emmy Nominations: 'Severance' Leads Field Ahead Of 'The Penguin', 'The Studio' & 'The White Lotus' – Full List 'Squid Game,' Diego Luna & Elisabeth Moss Snubbed In Emmy Nominations; Beyoncé & Martin Scorsese Among Big Surprises Jenny Slate On Emotional Journey To First Emmy Nomination For 'Dying For Sex': "I Knew Enough About Myself To Let It All Go" While there were only two categories last year devoid of nominees from diverse backgrounds (Guest Actor Comedy Series and Lead Actor in Limited Series, Anthology or Movie), this year there were three (Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Guest Actress in a Drama Series and Lead Actor in a Comedy Series). RELATED: The most diverse acting categories were Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series with Jessica Williams (Apple TV+'s Shrinking), Sheryl Lee Ralph (ABC's Abbott Elementary), Janelle James (Abbott Elementary), and Liza Colón-Zayas (The Bear) who made Emmy history last year as the first Latina to win the category. This is Colón-Zayas' second nomination. Another Emmy acting slot representing the most thespians of color was Lead Actress in a Comedy Series with Uzo Aduba (her sixth Emmy nom, for Netflix's The Residence, in a three-time Emmy-winning career), Ayo Edebiri with The Bear (who scored two Emmy noms this year in this category and comedy directing her Bear episode 'Napkins'), and Quinta Brunson for Abbott Elementary. RELATED: Had Diego Luna received a Best Actor in a Drama Series nom for Andor, it would have repped the first time two Latino actors shared the slot, the sole nominee this year in the category being Pedro Pascal for HBO's The Last of Us, his fourth career nom. Pascal is the second Latino nominee in the slot to be nominated more than once after NYPD Blue's Jimmy Smits' five-Emmy-nom streak from 1995 to 1999. Edebiri is the first Black woman to be nominated for acting and directing categories in a single year. She is also the youngest Black woman, at 29, to reach three Emmy acting noms in her career. She won best supporting actress comedy series in 2023 for her turn as Sydney Adamu on The Bear. She was nominated for a DGA Comedy Series directing award earlier this year for 'Napkins.' Abbott Elementary creator, EP and star Brunson counts 11 Primetime Emmy noms now in her career, having already won two for Outstanding Comedy Series Writing in 2022 and Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2023. She also nominated in the comedy series writing category for a third time this year, the first time a Black woman has achieved that benchmark with a single series. Brunson is tied with Stefani Robinson (Atlanta and What We Do in the Shadows) with the most writing Emmy noms by a Black woman. Brunson is also the first Black Woman to win for comedy writing. With his lead actor drama series nom for Hulu's Paradise, Sterling K. Brown ties with Don Cheadle and Andre Braugher with an overall 11 Emmy career noms across various categories. This is Brown's fifth Lead Actor in a a Drama Series nomination; he is a three-time Emmy winner, in 2016 for Limited Series Supporting Actor for FX's American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson, 2017 for Lead Actor Drama in This Is Us, and Outstanding Narrator in 2021 for Lincoln: Divided We Stand. Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang is the only AAPI standout this year among noms, the sketch player landing a supporting comedy actor nom. Yang is now the most nominated Asian American actor in the Emmy books with four. Kristen Kish receives her second Emmy nom in Outstanding Host for Reality or Reality Competition for Top Chef. The TV Academy overlooked key performances from Asian actors and actresses in The White Lotus, The Studio and Squid Game. Other shoutouts: First-time nominees include Zach Cherry and Travel Tillman both in Supporting Actor for Apple TV+'s Severance, Anthony Mackie for playing himself in the streamer's The Studio in the Best Actor Comedy slot, also Zoë Kravitz for Guest Comedy Actress on The Studio, Javier Bardem as the twisted father in Netflix's Monsters in Supporting Actor Limited Anthology, and Ashley Walters in Limited Series Anthology for Netflix's Adolescence. There's also Ruth Negga, who is already a 2017 Best Actress Oscar nominee for Loving, who lands her first Emmy nom for Apple TV+'s Presumed Innocent in the Limited Anthology Series Supporting Actress category. Rashida Jones gets her second career Emmy nom and first above-the-line acting nom in the Lead Actress Limited Series Anthology category for Black Mirror. She was previously recognized in the 2015 documentary filmmaking category for her non-fiction feature Hot Girls Wanted. Other actors from diverse backgrounds recognized in today's noms include Bryan Tyree Henry in Limited Actor Anthology Series for Apple TV+'s Dope Thief, Natasha Rothwell in Supporting Actress for HBO's The White Lotus, Colman Domingo for Supporting Actor Comedy Series for Netflix's The Four Seasons, Cynthia Erivo for Peacock's Poker Face in Guest Actress Comedy Series, Giancarlo Esposito for Prime Video's The Boys in Guest Actor Drama Series, Forest Whitaker for Disney+'s Andor in Guest Actor Drama Series, Jeffrey Wright for HBO's The Last of Us in Guest Actor Drama Series, RuPaul Charles for RuPaul's Drag Race in Reality or Reality Competition Host and Daymond John in Reality or Reality Competition Host for ABC's Shark Tank. Human remains discovered inside California fireworks facility after devastating explosion

Authorities confirmed the discovery of human remains at the site of a devastating fireworks explosion in California that rocked the small farming community of Esparto on Tuesday. Yolo County officials released a statement on Friday revealing that investigators had located the remains following the blaze at the fireworks warehouse. The explosion, which occurred at a facility operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics, has led to a widespread investigation, with seven individuals still missing. The blast not only caused significant destruction to the warehouse, but also sparked a massive fire that spread rapidly, triggering several spot fires throughout the region. In the aftermath of the explosion, nearby Fourth of July festivities were called off, and the rural community was left in shock. Yolo County's Coroner's Division was granted access to the site on Friday, and officials confirmed they are in contact with the families of the missing, The Associated Press reported. While no positive identifications of the remains have been made at this time, recovery efforts are still ongoing. 'We are working diligently to identify those involved and offer support to their families during this tragic time,' Yolo County spokeswoman, Jessica Williams, said. In addition to the missing persons, two individuals have been treated for injuries, though their conditions remain unclear. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and authorities are working with federal agencies to determine what led to the catastrophic incident. The warehouse is known for producing large-scale fireworks displays for major events in the Bay Area. The company, which has been in business for over 30 years, stated in a brief statement that it would fully cooperate with the investigation. Before its website was taken down, it was noted that Devastating Pyrotechnics focuses mainly on display fireworks for large productions, rather than retail products. Meanwhile, further south in Los Angeles, fireworks-related incidents continued to cause havoc. On Thursday night, a 'fireworks-related blaze' erupted in a neighborhood, destroying four homes. Authorities confirmed one man was found dead at the scene, while a woman was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Four other individuals were treated for smoke inhalation on-site, and several animals were reported injured in the fire. Firefighters battled the blaze through the night, with fireworks still erupting in the area when they arrived. The Los Angeles Fire Department managed to bring the situation under control, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. 'We are continuing to assess the damage and work to determine the cause of this tragic event,' Las Angeles spokesperson Lyndsey Lantz said. As investigations continue in both Northern and Southern California, local residents are grappling with the aftermath of these fireworks-related tragedies. One woman, Syanna Ruiz said her boyfriend - an expectant father - went missing during his first day working at the sprawling fireworks factory. Her boyfriend, Jesus Ramos, 18, was one of the seven people unaccounted for after the chilling explosion. Ruiz is one of those loved ones waiting in fear. She told local ABC affiliate, KSBW-TV, that she has a 'baby on the way' with Ramos. 'We have a baby on the way and I can't even risk things like that right now,' she told the outlet in tears. 'He had so much coming for him and they were saying that there was a warning beforehand but somebody is behind this. There's no way that this just happened.' She added that the explosion happened on her boyfriend's first day and that he was excited to start a new chapter. Ruiz was in attendance for a press conference, where she pressed officials on why the families impacted haven't received more information. 'We were here since yesterday and are yet to receive any information, have yet to see any efforts and yet to see anybody go, to try to find anybody at all who was stuck in the warehouse, who have tried to escape or is possibly stuck under the debris of the warehouse,' Ruiz told officials. Esparto Fire Chief Curtis Lawrence said authorities were doing the best they could with the information they had and apologized that the updates may not be what families want to hear. 'But you guys are supposed to protect us from danger, you guys are supposed to deal with the danger,' Ruiz hit back. Ruiz spoke with local news about her frustration with the lack of communication between first responders and the impacted families She told local ABC affiliate, KXTV, that Ramos joined the factory with his three brothers, who were also reported missing. 'They were all three incredible men who had so much coming for them. And I'm just praying to God that some way, somehow that they're okay,' she said. Victims' services were set up for the families of the seven people who were reported missing. Authorities haven't confirmed the identities of those who remain unaccounted for or whether they were employed with the pyrotechnics facility.
