Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario
Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Many wondered about Dak Prescott's future this time a year ago when the Dallas Cowboys had not yet committed an extension to their franchise quarterback. Their intentions were never truly in doubt though the deal did not get done until hours before the regular season kicked off. Advertisement Coming off an injury that cut his campaign short, Prescott is set to enter the first year of that massive extension. However, people are still convinced the Cowboys want to trade their franchise quarterback. Bleacher Report's Alex Kay warned that the Cowboys could be major sellers ahead of the trade deadline this fall if they start to sputter early in the season. Such a scenario would mean the team moving on from Prescott altogether. "Given how desperate ownership is to make it back to the biggest stage—it's been three decades since Dallas reached the NFC Championship Game, let alone represented the conference on Super Bowl Sunday—and a potential replacement for Prescott waiting in the wings with the recently acquired Joe Milton III, it may not be long before the Cowboys elect to initiate a roster overhaul," Alex Kay wrote. "If Dallas stumbles out of the gate and is well out of contention by mid-October, expect this once-proud organization to start selling off pieces and load up on assets to retool with in the 2026 off-season under another coaching regime." Advertisement For one, it would take an extraordinary failure across the board for the Cowboys to move on entirely from this core and coaching staff after 2025. Writing off Brian Schottenheimer and this group before one game is just plain silly. More importantly, the Cowboys have no plans to move on from Prescott. Despite the huge contract extension and the moves to strengthen this offense, those outside The Star continue to toss this idea around. The Cowboys want to break through and get back to the conference championship and eventually a Super Bowl. Many continue to miss the point that Prescott is their investment to achieve those goals, whether it pays off or not. A trade for Joe Milton does not change that nor should a rough start change that (for now). Advertisement Despite the wish-casting for Dallas to abandon an arguable top-10 quarterback, it's not happening. Prescott remains the center of the franchise moving forward and there is no challenge to status with the team. Cowboys 53-man roster projection: One spot left open for player not on current roster
The Dallas Cowboys' official training camp dates are set. The team will be arriving in southern California on July 20. They will have their first practice in full pads on July 27. Their first preseason game is Aug. 9. A lot could change over the next two months, but this is a dead period in the NFL season. So what better time for a 53-man roster projection? Dallas Cowboys training camp schedule — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) June 25, 2025 Here's our way-to-early prediction coming out of the team's offseason program. There's no reason to keep more than two with all of the other areas on the roster that are going to be tight. Dak Prescott is the obvious franchise quarterback and Joe Milton III is the obvious backup. Former Dallas backup Cooper Rush is now in Baltimore and the Cowboys traded a fifth-round pick for Milton. There's really not much to debate about here. Rush was a more experienced player, but Milton has the higher upside. Advertisement Dak Prescott Joe Milton III Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders are veterans, so it makes sense why they took all of the first-team reps during organized team activities and minicamp. Dallas used a fifth-round pick on Jaydon Blue. Those three seem pretty locked in. Fullback Hunter Luepke is also a good bet because of what he brings as a runner, blocker and potential pass catcher as an extra tight end. That leaves Phil Mafah and Deuce Vaughn competing for the final running back spot. The edge goes to the recent seventh-round pick. Wide receiver KaVontae Turpin could also see more backfield work this season. Javonte Williams Miles Sanders Jaydon Blue Phil Mafah Hunter Luepke Here's a position where the Cowboys go a little light because of the need in other areas. Jake Ferguson is the clear No. 1. Luke Schoonmaker and Brevyn Spann-Ford will battle for the No. 2 spot. Princeton Fant would be next up if they keep a fourth. Luepke being able to help in this area makes it a little easier to go with only three. Jake Ferguson Luke Schoonmaker Brevyn Spann-Ford Before trading for George Pickens, it made sense to keep a sixth wide receiver, but that's not as much of a need now. It will probably take a very impressive training camp and preseason for Dallas to go with six. Next up would be Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks and Parris Campbell. Some might question why Jonathan Mingo is basically considered a lock. Regardless of how Mingo performs over the next couple months, the Cowboys gave up a fourth-round pick in November for him. It would be very surprising if he wasn't on the 53. CeeDee Lamb George Pickens Jalen Tolbert KaVontae Turpin Jonathan Mingo The starting five is set with the first five listed below. There are more questions with who will be the next five reserves. Dallas could go with only nine but also as many as 11 here. The five reserves listed would give the Cowboys depth at all five positions. If we kept 11, T.J. Bass would have been the next man up. If any shuffling was needed at one of the starting tackle spots, Tyler Smith would probably move outside. Advertisement Tyler Smith, LG Tyler Booker, RG Cooper Beebe, C Tyler Guyton, LT Terence Steele, RT Brock Hoffman, G/C Asim Richards, OT Ajani Cornelius, OT Nate Thomas, T/G Rob Jones, OG Ten seems like a good number, going with six edge rushers and four tackles. The first five edge rushers are locked in if all stay healthy. Payton Turner would probably be the odd man out if the Cowboys went with only nine here. There's not much debate with the tackles. As much as many on the outside would like to see Dallas do more at the position, it wouldn't be a surprise to see these four tackles open the season. Micah Parsons, DE Dante Fowler, DE Sam Williams, DE Marshawn Kneeland, DE Donovan Ezeiruaku, DE Payton Turner, DE Osa Odighizuwa, DT Solomon Thomas, DT Mazi Smith, DT Jay Toia, DT This prediction was made thinking that DeMarvion Overshown will start the season on injured reserve with the hopes of returning midseason. Kenneth Murray Jr. and Jack Sanborn were the first-team linebackers during OTAs and minicamp, but don't count out Marist Liufau as a Week 1 starter. Liufau and Overshown remain the future at the position. Marist Liufau Kenneth Murray Jr. Jack Sanborn Shemar James Damone Clark If the Cowboys are to make another notable roster move between now and the season opener, cornerback is the best bet. So a spot was left open at the position. That could potentially be a veteran free agent like Stephon Gilmore or someone Dallas makes a move for late in camp or during roster cuts. If they were to stick with what they have, Andrew Booth would probably be the fifth cornerback. This projection is also made with the thought that Trevon Diggs could start the season on injured reserve. If he was ready to go early in the season, another corner wouldn't be needed. Diggs, DaRon Bland and either Kaiir Elam or Shavon Revel Jr. would be the starting group. Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson are expected to remain the starting safeties. Israel Mukuamu could see time at safety and cornerback. He got some work at corner during minicamp. DaRon Bland, CB Shavon Revel Jr., CB Kaiir Elam, CB Caelen Carson, CB * Cornerback not currently on the roster Malik Hooker, S Donovan Wilson, S Markquese Bell, S Juanyeh Thomas, S Israel Mukuamu, DB It's not difficult to predict these three spots. This has been the expectation all offseason. As long as they remain healthy, this will be the group. Brandon Aubrey, K Bryan Anger, P Trent Sieg, LS

Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys
Joe Milton III Embracing His New Opportunity with Dallas Cowboys originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Joe Milton III earlier this offseason with the hope he could develop and serve as backup for franchise quarterback Dak Prescott. Advertisement So far, so good ... as Mike Fisher of reports that the 6-6 second-year prospect with the cannon arm took second-team reps this week at OTAs. As NFL fans know, Milton impressed during his one regular-season appearance with the New England Patriots as a rookie last season. In New England's Week 18 win over the Buffalo Bills this past January, Milton completed 22-of-29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. "I went in there and did what the play caller and head coach wanted me to do, and that's win the game," Milton said. "I didn't know what was going to happen. It was the last game of the season. I was just going off happy. I went out with a win in my first game ever in the NFL. That's pretty much all I was thinking about, until two months later and boom, I'm here." Advertisement While speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Florida native spoke about 'looking for a fresh start' with the Cowboys after just one season with the Patriots. "It did catch me by surprise," Milton said about the trade. "Was I surprised? Yes. I woke up around 7:00 a.m., woke up to a call and knew I was getting traded. Only thing I did at that moment was thank God. I'm blessed. Coming here was a blessing. I didn't know it was going to be here. My agent said there were multiple teams that called. I didn't know where I was going to end up. I was just thankful to go somewhere." To many in Cowboys Nation, this was less of a surprise, as Dallas' rumored interest was well known. And now that "Bazooka Joe'' is getting to know his way around The Star? He's got four reasons to view the move as a "blessing,'' as he lists 1) the warm weather, 2) an indoor stadium, 3) "It's America's Team!'' and 4) the opportunity to learn from Prescott. Advertisement With the Cowboys, Milton plans to continue honing his skills as an NFL quarterback as he embraces his new environment and teammates. ... with all parties hoping for more "blessings.'' How backup QB Joe Milton is adjusting to Cowboys' new offense
FRISCO, Texas — Players rarely complain when they are traded to the Dallas Cowboys. So, it's not a surprise to learn that Joe Milton III was just fine with the early April trade that sent him from New England to Dallas. Following Thursday's organized team activities at The Star, the second-year quarterback called the move a 'blessing' for the following reasons. Milton was selected by the Patriots with the 193rd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, a disappointing outcome for a player who had hoped to go as early as the second round. He didn't play in a regular-season game until Week 18, getting the majority of the work in an impressive showing. The last thing he was thinking at the time was that he'd be with a different team in 2025. Advertisement Milton said he was genuinely surprised to find out on April 3 that he was being traded along with a 2025 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick. New England drafted quarterback Drake Maye third overall in 2024. He's the future of the franchise. Apparently, the Patriots didn't think there would be enough opportunities for a second young arm on the roster. 'We felt like his reps were gonna be decreased as we worked through the offseason,' New England coach Mike Vrabel told reporters of the trade in April. 'And we felt just like every other decision, we're gonna try to do what's best for the team, and that's the decision that we ultimately made.' Milton's exceptional game against Buffalo, which included completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards, one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdown, was enough to create serious interest from the Cowboys. They were looking to get younger behind Prescott. Rather than draft a prospect, they traded for one that had already impressed in an NFL game. 'I went in there and did what the play caller and head coach wanted me to do, and that's win the game,' Milton said. 'I didn't know what was going to happen. It was the last game of the season. I was just going off happy. I went out with a win in my first game ever in the NFL. That's pretty much all I was thinking about, until two months later and boom, I'm here. 'After the Buffalo game, I was like, it's fun. I feel like I can keep doing this. I feel like there is more that I need to let out. I was just having fun. It's probably one of the best days of my life.' Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer on Joe Milton: 'I was excited about Joe before we got him. When you go into these deals and you're talking about making trades, we all reach out to people that you know, people that you trust, people that have been exposed to said player at… — Jon Machota (@jonmachota) May 21, 2025 Milton struggled at times last week during the first OTA practice open to reporters, throwing two interceptions during 11-on-11 team drills. On Thursday, he was much more accurate, looking confident as he threw only one incomplete pass during his reps with the second-team offense. He connected downfield on multiple big plays, including one on a seam route to tight end Princeton Fant. Advertisement 'I was excited about Joe before we got him,' Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. 'When you go into these deals and you're talking about making trades, we all reach out to people that you know, people that you trust, people that have been exposed to said player at college, different programs, friends that have been around him. And you just dig and you ask and you get different opinions and there's always an outlier, good and bad, with each of them. You try to peel those away. 'But from the time he's been here, the work ethic is incredible. He's one of the first people in the building. He's one of the last to leave. The way he's attacked the playbook and picking it up has been incredible. And it's been fun for me to watch Dak and Will (Grier), but really Dak take a mentorship role with Joe. The talent speaks for itself. You guys will see it. He made some incredible throws (last week). He's just an exciting young prospect that I think the sky's the limit for.' Milton has a unique way he learns a new offense. The traditional dry-erase board doesn't work for him. He prefers a piece of tape and poker chips. The tape is the line of scrimmage and the poker chips have letters written on them to symbolize the different skill position players. He prefers moving the chips over having to erase the board. His girlfriend has the script. She calls out a play. Milton repeats it back. He then goes to his chips and lines them up in the formation. The plan is to do that every day during the month between the end of minicamp and the start of training camp. 'It's way different,' Milton said of the Cowboys' offensive language. 'This offense here brings me back more to my college days. My last offense was more everybody get tagged on which routes. This offense here is more fast and for sure explosive. '… I feel like we're taking the right step in the right direction every day. We're paying attention to small details.' Milton envisions a great opportunity to learn from an experienced veteran like Prescott, who has started 122 NFL games. Schottenheimer believes Dallas has the ideal quarterback room for a 25-year-old Milton to grow as a player. 'It never stops,' Schottenheimer said. 'I've had young starters and veteran backups. I've had veteran starters and young backups. The quarterback position is a position that gets so much scrutiny that you're always trying to place an emphasis on: Are they getting better? Are they getting consistent? Are they doing the things they need to do? You try to piece that room together. Advertisement 'It is something you talk about, the mixing and matching and how it looks. I've heard other stories where some rooms didn't get along great and that's never a good thing. But we don't have that here. We have a great room. With Dak, Joe and Will, it's been awesome.'
