Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario

Dak Prescott Named In Another Ridiculous Trade Scenario

Many wondered about Dak Prescott's future this time a year ago when the Dallas Cowboys had not yet committed an extension to their franchise quarterback. Their intentions were never truly in doubt though the deal did not get done until hours before the regular season kicked off.

Coming off an injury that cut his campaign short, Prescott is set to enter the first year of that massive extension. However, people are still convinced the Cowboys want to trade their franchise quarterback.
Bleacher Report's Alex Kay warned that the Cowboys could be major sellers ahead of the trade deadline this fall if they start to sputter early in the season. Such a scenario would mean the team moving on from Prescott altogether.
"Given how desperate ownership is to make it back to the biggest stage—it's been three decades since Dallas reached the NFC Championship Game, let alone represented the conference on Super Bowl Sunday—and a potential replacement for Prescott waiting in the wings with the recently acquired Joe Milton III, it may not be long before the Cowboys elect to initiate a roster overhaul," Alex Kay wrote.
"If Dallas stumbles out of the gate and is well out of contention by mid-October, expect this once-proud organization to start selling off pieces and load up on assets to retool with in the 2026 off-season under another coaching regime."

For one, it would take an extraordinary failure across the board for the Cowboys to move on entirely from this core and coaching staff after 2025. Writing off Brian Schottenheimer and this group before one game is just plain silly.
More importantly, the Cowboys have no plans to move on from Prescott. Despite the huge contract extension and the moves to strengthen this offense, those outside The Star continue to toss this idea around.
The Cowboys want to break through and get back to the conference championship and eventually a Super Bowl. Many continue to miss the point that Prescott is their investment to achieve those goals, whether it pays off or not.
A trade for Joe Milton does not change that nor should a rough start change that (for now).

Despite the wish-casting for Dallas to abandon an arguable top-10 quarterback, it's not happening. Prescott remains the center of the franchise moving forward and there is no challenge to status with the team.

Dallas Mavericks sign No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg to rookie contract

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks have signed No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg to his four-year rookie contract. The team didn't disclose details in announcing the deal Wednesday. The total value of the contract for the top pick on the 2025-26 rookie wage scale is in the range of $62.7 million, with a first-year salary of about $13.8 million, according to Spotrac. Those numbers can fluctuate slightly. There are team options in the third and fourth seasons of rookie deals. Flagg said during his introductory news conference last week that he intends to play in the Summer League in Las Vegas later this month. The Mavericks' Summer League opener against the Los Angeles Lakers and Bronny James is set to be nationally televised on July 10. Flagg was taken with the top pick after Dallas converted just a 1.8% chance to win the draft lottery. The 18-year-old from Duke became the fourth freshman to win The Associated Press national player of the year honors in the 64-year history of the award. Flagg led the Blue Devils to the Final Four in his only season. The 6-foot-9 forward joins a frontcourt that should include 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis and promising young center Dereck Lively II, Flagg's fellow Duke alum. The Mavs shocked the NBA by sending 25-year-old superstar Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Davis in February. Dallas guard Kyrie Irving is another former Duke player to go first overall in the draft, in 2011. He will be out, probably until at least midseason, while recovering from a torn ACL. Irving was injured in March. ___ AP NBA:

Browns quarterback Sanders on Toronto Argonauts 45-man negotiation list

TORONTO - He's currently vying for a roster spot with the Cleveland Browns, but if that doesn't pan out, then Canada could be an option for quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Sanders is one of 45 players on the Toronto Argonauts' negotiation list. On Wednesday, the CFL unveiled the full negotiation lists of its nine teams for the first time, which will be updated every 24 hours. Previously, teams would reveal 10 of their negotiation list players twice a year. Cleveland selected Sanders in the fifth round of the NFL draft in April. The former Colorado Buffalo — who had been rated as a first-round prospect — is part of a crowded Browns quarterback room that also includes veterans Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, along with rookie Dillon Gabriel, a 2025 third-round selection. CFL teams can have up to 45 players on their negotiation lists. Those players can also be playing in another pro league, still attending college or be current free agents. That gives the Canadian clubs exclusive negotiating rights to those players should they decide to play north of the border. Players can be added or removed at a team's discretion on a first-come, first-served basis. Clubs own exclusive rights to those players so long as they're on a negotiation list. Negotiation-list players are often a crapshoot, as most never set foot in Canada. But the lists can bear fruit as Hamilton rookie quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa — the younger brother of Miami Dolphins star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — signed with the Tiger-Cats last year after being placed on their negotiation list but was released before the start of training camp in May. And in 2018, Hamilton signed Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel after placing him on its negotiation list. Also on Toronto's list is Sydney Brown, of London, Ont., a defensive back currently with the Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles. Brown is one of two Canadians on a CFL neg list, the other being receiver Chase Claypool, of Abbotsford, B.C., an NFL free agent currently on Saskatchewan's list. Quarterback Max Duggan, who led TCU to the U.S. college football championship game in 2023, is also on Toronto's list. Also on the Riders' negotiation list is quarterback Trey Lance, who signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers in April. Lance was selected third overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers, who dealt him to the Dallas Cowboys in August 2023. On May 1, 2024, Dallas declined the fifth-year option on Lance's contract, making him a free agent after the 2024 season. Ian Book, the winningest quarterback at Notre Dame, is on Winnipeg's negotiation list. Book was with Philadelphia last season. Also on the Bombers list is former Baylor receiver Denzel Mims, a 2020 second-round pick of the New York Jets. Edmonton's list features former Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham (currently a receiver with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens) and Kansas receiver Luke Grimm (NFL's Los Angeles Chargers). Quarterback Tommy Mellott, of Montana State, is on Calgary's list. Mellott was a 2025 sixth-round pick of the Las Vegas Raiders and will attempt to make the NFL team's roster as a receiver. And receiver Efton Chism III, who broke Cooper Kupp's all-time receptions record at Eastern Washington, is on the B.C. Lions' list. Chism III signed with the New England Patriots after being bypassed in the NFL draft. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 2, 2025. Error! Clayton Kershaw eyes 3,000th strikeout milestone in front of home fans at Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — Clayton Kershaw takes the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night needing three strikeouts to reach 3,000 for the only team he's played for during his 18-year career. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is expected to achieve the milestone in front of his home fans at Dodger Stadium — where he has 1,627 Ks — when he faces the Chicago White Sox. Kershaw will become the 20th pitcher in major league history to reach the vaunted mark. He'll join Justin Verlander of San Francisco (3,468) and Max Scherzer of Toronto (3,412) as the only active pitchers with that many. Kershaw will be just the fourth left-hander in the club. Teammate Freddie Freeman has been reminding Kershaw daily how many Ks he needs to reach the milestone even as Kershaw remains focused on trying to give the team chances to win. The White Sox have the eighth-most strikeouts in baseball with 707, and average about nine per game. Kershaw is making history at a time when he's provided much-needed stability for the Dodgers' pitching staff, which has been decimated by injuries this season. The NL West-leading Dodgers have won his past five starts. He is 4-0 with a 3.03 ERA going into his ninth start — two more than he made in an injury-shortened 2024 season — of the year. Kershaw faces the White Sox seeking his 217th career victory, which would break a tie with Scherzer for second among active players behind Verlander's 262. The 37-year-old left-hander struggled in his first start of the season when he allowed five runs over four innings in his first start after returning from knee and foot surgeries last offseason. Since then, he has held opposing batters to a .222 average. Age and less dominant stuff has changed the way Kershaw does his job. He knows his consistency isn't the same but with the depth of the team's staff, he doesn't need to be perfect every outing. Kershaw no longer overpowers hitters the way he did during the height of his career, but he remains stubbornly determined and possesses a craftiness honed over 18 seasons as well as a slider that can still fool. In his prime from 2010 to 2015, he led the National League in ERA five times, in strikeouts three times and wins twice. Kershaw had one of the best seasons ever in 2014, when he finished with a 21-3 record, 1.77 ERA and 233 strikeouts to win both the Cy Young and Most Valuable Player in the National League. This season, the Texas-born Kershaw tied the franchise record for most seasons in Dodger blue, joining outfielder Zack Wheat and shortstop Bill Russell. Kershaw's wife, Ellen, and their children Cali, Charley, Cooper and Chance will be on hand. The couple recently announced she is expecting their fifth child.
