Joel's mum gets in touch in EastEnders as Ross pales in shock over her big news

Metro6 days ago
Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) receives some big news about his ex-partner in EastEnders next week.
Alongside son Joel (Max Murray) and partner Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), the trio came to Walford for her uncle Martin's (James Bye) funeral.
It soon transpired that they couldn't return to their home in Australia, as Joel had upskirted a pupil in his class, and Ross had paid her family $50,000 in exchange for their silence.
He's since enacted havoc on the residents of Albert Square, impregnating Avani Nandra-Hart (Aaliyah James) and introducing new mate Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall) to dangerous adult content online.
Later, Joel showed Tommy videos made by a disgusting influencer, who degrades women.
Joel thought this was an appropriate way to talk about the opposite sex, branding his own mum a 'slapper', talking about how she abandoned him as a child.
Fans of the BBC One soap then began to question whether his estranged mum was none other than returnee Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), which was only fuelled further when he told Vicki that she 'ain't his mother', echoing Zoe's words two decades earlier.
Unfortunately, judging by upcoming scenes, that theory seems to be dead in the water.
Next week, Ross takes Joel and Tommy to work at the timber yard on Turpin Road, hoping it will keep them out of bother during the school holidays. However, he soon becomes concerned for their welfare when he overhears some of the language used by his colleagues.
Returning home at the end of the day, he's shocked to receive a call from his ex – Joel's mum – who has revealed she's getting remarried.
The incident seems to cause Joel's behaviour to spiral, as he heads over to The Vic to hang out with Tommy and to steal some booze from the barrel store. More Trending
The lads are quickly caught in the act, and as Ross and Tommy's adoptive dad Alfie (Shane Richie) rile at them for their behaviour, Joel kicks off and dishes out some disgusting comments to landlady Kat (Jessie Wallace).

It seems he's back to square one with his shocking behaviour, with Ross and Vicki at a loose end with how to control him. The situation only worsens when something is discovered on the teen's laptop.
Ross, full of anger and confusion, destroys the device. Vicki is gobsmacked when she discovers the reason why it was smashed, and orders her boyfriend to be firm with his son before he makes his next move.

Later, in the pub, Joel delivers an apology to Kat and she allows him to hang out with Tommy again. However, as Vicki and Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) discuss parenting and their love lives, Joel becomes infuriated and shows his true colours.

‘Breathtaking' desert island movie with rare Rotten Tomatoes score is streaming for free

One of the best animated movies in years with top scores from critics has just been added to BBC iPlayer BBC iPlayer has just added a critically acclaimed animated film that is guaranteed to knock your socks off. ‌ Based on one of the most popular children's books ever written, this beloved tale of adventure and friendship has been brought to life in stunning hand-drawn animation that harkens back to classic Disney films. ‌ Following its broadcast on BBC One this afternoon (Sunday, 3rd August), this heart-racing journey of discovery will be available to stream completely free of charge for a limited time. ‌ Viewers can be assured of the film's quality as it scored an impressive 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Even better, the film's runtime clocks in at a breezy hour and 16 minutes, making it the ideal watch for a lazy afternoon. Kensuke's Kingdom, based on the acclaimed 1999 novel by Michael Morpurgo, follows the thrilling voyage of a young boy (voiced by Aaron MacGregor) at sea who eventually finds himself stranded on a desert island. ‌ Thankfully, he soon discovers he's not alone. The boy, along with his dog Stella Artois, strikes up an unlikely friendship with a Japanese man named Kensuke (Ken Watanabe) and the orangutans who have made the island their home, who help him survive. Although not able to speak much English, Kensuke slowly reveals his own tragic life story of fleeing Japan during the terrors of the Second World War. This poignant tale is perfect for families with slightly older children keen to get sucked into an epic journey of adventure, history and survival. ‌ An audience review on Rotten Tomatoes described Kensuke's Kingdom as 'a breathtakingly beautiful film that's gentle on the senses as its delicately delivered themes.' A five-star Google review agreed, writing: 'Magical and emotionally powerful film that deserves to become a family classic. 'Avoiding spoilers here is hard, but there is one drop of ink in the film that took my breath away and had my throat in knots. It's beautiful, powerful, emotional, yet comfortingly familiar. ‌ 'A film to cosy up on the sofa under a blanket with your favourite young family and rewatch every year to remember the important themes of anti-war and respect for nature that run through it. Beautiful film.' A third concurred, adding: 'Awesome movie with beautiful visuals and meaningful storytelling.' ‌ Praise continued over on Letterboxd, where one fan raved: 'Beautiful and full of heart! 'Simple, familiar concept but so well executed. It's Cast Away mixed with Avatar and shades of Planet of the Apes. 'Very good dosage between feel good and tragedy, had a smile on my face most of the time but I also had tears in my eyes twice.' ‌ Viewers were also impressed by the film's voice cast, which also includes Oppenheimer Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy and Paddington star Sally Hawkins. 'Went to the theatre to hear Cillian's voice and to have a fun time. Left sobbing uncontrollably,' one fan admitted. 'This film's message is so beautiful and moving, knowing that Cillian wanted to be part of this project makes me love him even more and I didn't even know that could be possible.' Kensuke's Kingdom is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

EastEnders' Lorraine Stanley used weight loss jabs to lose 6.5st but changed her mind

Lorraine Stanley, who played Karen Taylor in EastEnders, has opened up about her 6.5st weight loss EastEnders star Lorraine Stanley has become almost unrecognisable from her character Karen Taylor, the endearing yet perpetually scruffy mum she portrayed on the BBC soap from 2017 to 2024. ‌ The 49-year-old actress has shed an impressive six and a half stone over two years and next month will walk down the aisle after a two-year engagement to her fiancé Mark Perez, with whom she shares daughter, Nancy, nine. ‌ But transforming her body hasn't all been plain sailing. As well as expressing her excitement about her upcoming wedding, Lorraine has revealed the secrets behind her remarkable weight loss, which was aided by jabs. ‌ "I'm 50 next year and I'm feeling great," Lorraine told the Mirror. "I looked 20 years older when I was bigger. I certainly felt it anyway... I've lost 6½st. I weigh 8st now. "If you look at my little wrists and ankles, this is the weight I should have been. I should be a thin person. And I always was, until I hit my late twenties. ‌ "I'm not going to lie, nor am I promoting it, but I had weight-loss surgery two years ago. I had a gastric sleeve. I went to Harley Street. I didn't go to a clinic in Turkey or anything. "In saying that, I've had friends who've gone to Turkey and had great experiences, but I didn't trust that process. So, yeah, I went to a London clinic, paid an awful lot of money and had it done. "It's hands-down the best thing I've ever done – both for me and for my family." ‌ Lorraine said she was "missing out on so much" due to her size. She "so big" that she couldn't chase her daughter up the road or play football with her outside, until the weight loss surgery "changed everything". Lorraine said the "lightbulb moment" was when she was watching an episode of EastEnders she was in and she could "barely look at herself". ‌ "The person on screen was unrecognisable to me," she said, before explaining her experience with weight-loss injections. "I'd tried Wegovy before opting for surgery," the soap star admitted. "I have friends on different weight-loss jabs and they work for them. I'm not against them, but for whatever reason I feel like I got immune to them. "It got to the point where I was injecting myself and eating at the same time. I was thinking, 'What the hell are you doing?' So I decided that was it, time to get this surgery booked." ‌ Lorraine said she is "healthier, fitter, and [surgery has] changed her mindset for the better". "It has been hard, though," she noted. "You've got to work at your portions. You don't want to overeat as you can stretch the gastric band. And you don't want to do that as you've paid good money for it. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. "But for me – and this is totally personal – it's the best thing I could have done." On a potential return to EastEnders, she added: "Maybe – they didn't kill me off. But right now, I wouldn't. I'm enjoying Nancy. On EastEnders, I missed a lot of milestones. Now I'm like her personal taxi driver... I've gone for a few auditions. I haven't got anything yet, but I will. And if I don't, I don't mind that either. I'm so happy being a mum."
