Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill Reunite for "Highlander" Reboot
Yara Sameh Russell Crowe is set to reunite with his "Man of Steel" co-star Henry Cavill for the remake of 'Highlander.' The Oscar-winner is set to play Cavill's mentor in a variation on the part played by Sean Connery in the 1986 original film. 'John Wick' director Chad Stahelski will helm the remake from a script by Michael Finch ('John Wick: Chapter 4'). 'Highlander' is backed by Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists, which is run by former Netflix film chief Scott Stuber. The film will open theatrically. Crowe was one of the biggest stars of the late '90s and 00s, appearing in action-heavy roles in the likes of 'Gladiator' and 'Master & Commander,' and earning critical raves for more dramatic work in 'The Insider,' 'A Beautiful Mind,' and 'L.A. Confidential.' In recent years, he's taken on more character parts in the likes of 'Kraven the Hunter' or starred in lower-budgeted movies such as 'The Pope's Exorcist' and 'Sleeping Dogs.' Crowe is next slated to play Hermann Göring, one of Hitler's most trusted allies, in James Vanderbilt's 'Nuremberg,' which Sony Pictures Classics will release in November. He also recently wrapped work on Netflix's 'Unabom,' which looks at the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski, as well as the Cold War thriller 'Billion Dollar Spy' and the action thriller 'Bear Country.' Stuber and Nick Nesbitt will produce 'Highlander' for United Artists alongside Neal H. Moritz, 87Eleven Entertainment, Stahelski's production banner, Josh Davis of Davis Panzer Productions, and Louise Rosner. United Artists has secured full rights to the 1986 original, which Lionsgate developed, with the potential to also develop a new series. The original film starred Christopher Lambert and centered on a group of nearly invincible, ageless warriors. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks Videos & Features Video: Trending Lifestyle TikToker Valeria Márquez Shot Dead during Live Stream News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan Technology 50-Year Soviet Spacecraft 'Kosmos 482' Crashes into Indian Ocean News 3 Killed in Shooting Attack in Thailand

Ballerina's Chad Stahelski Says The John Wick Franchise Could Keep Working Without Keanu Reeves, But He Has One Concern I Agree With
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In the new John Wick spinoff Ballerina, the presence of Keanu Reeves feels like a security blanket of sorts. Without a guarantee that audiences would buy into a new movie within the canon following a new protagonist, the filmmaker/studio included plenty of the legendary Baba Yaga to make the project appear more connected to the continuity/enticing. But what does that potentially say about the franchise as a whole as it continues to expand with a variety of projects? It's an interesting conundrum for John Wick series director/Ballerina producer Chad Stahelski that the filmmaker recently addressed The question of whether or not the John Wick canon can expand without leaning directly on the star power power of Keanu Reeves is one that was posed directly to Stahelski during a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, and the short answer to the matter is "yes" (and it's apparently something he has discussed with the actor personally). That being said, he also recognizes that there is a need to not spread the material too thin with too much too fast. Said the Ballerina producer, Keanu and I actually just talked about this. Look, it's always tricky. I think the world can be supported as long as you don't go crazy and carpet bomb. What we're doing now are stories we really want to tell that feel organic. So what does that mean in his eyes? Chad Stahelski constructed a metaphor by imagining a multi-series Alice In Wonderland franchise. He continued, You've seen Alice in Wonderland. Now what about the Rabbit? What about the Cheshire Cat? Also, sometimes in your own franchise, you get so far up your own ass with the mythology that by the 10th movie you don't know what's going on. I don't ever want to get that way with Wick. I want each one to be able to stand alone. As of right now, with Ballerina now playing in theaters, there are three projects that have been lined up for the future of the John Wick franchise: A Caine Spinoff: A live-action from John Wick: Chapter 4 centered around the blind assassin played by Donnie Yen (Yen is also attached to direct). John Wick's Impossible Task Prequel: An animated movie that will tell the story of how John Wick managed to win his freedom from the High Council so that he could live a life of peace with his wife, Helen John Wick: Chapter 5: While recent comments from Chad Stahelski have suggested that the sequel isn't guaranteed, another sequel centered around the world's most dangerous assassin following the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 is in development. From that list, the Caine project will presumably be the big test for the strength of the John Wick franchise – assuming that the story doesn't find a way to incorporate some kind of Keanu Reeves appearance. It will be fascinating to see how things develop following the release of Ballerina, and we here at CinemaBlend will continue to keep you apprised of the latest developments within the canon.

REVIEW: ‘Ballerina,' is a violent dance for revenge
Opinions are the author's alone and not endorsed by 2 NEWS and/or Nexstar Media Group. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Given that its a spinoff in the world of the ever-popular John Wick franchise, 'Ballerina' lives up to expectations. That's the review. Rating: R – for reasons obvious to most, but just in case, strong violence and language. Runtime: 2 hours, 4 minutes. Still here? Well, thanks, I'll expound a little bit. If you're a fan of John Wick, then you'll be pleased with this effort here by the spinoff. Ana de Armas is a convincing assassin 'From the World of John Wick,' and the action set pieces structured around her character's revenge tour are well executed. The story and character development are each as thin as a veil, but that's the standard for these movies. John Wick got back into the business after his dog was killed; Eve Macarro (Armas) becomes an assassin to avenge her father. Once the revenge plot is set in motion in these movies, they really move from point A to Z at the speed of a thumping heartbeat. For reference, 'Ballerina' takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. Wick does appear in the film (which is revealed in the trailer), and he is as cool as usual. Keanu Reeves can probably play this character in his sleep at this point. To say more on the action pieces, they are elaborate and ever-present. While stuntman/filmmaker Chad Stahelski did not direct 'Ballerina,' the action here gives fans what they're looking for. Personally though, the John Wick movies aren't my thing because of how much violence they contain, combined with bare story elements that make the characters doing the violence harder to care about. Ballerina X Reviews: Action-Packed John Wick Spin-Off Gets A Thumbs Up
Last Updated: Directed by Len Wiseman, the movie recently had its premiere, and the early reviews have been positive. After four exciting John Wick movies with Keanu Reeves, the creators decided to expand the story with a new show called The Continental. Now, two years later, a new spin-off titled Ballerina is ready to hit theatres. Ballerina, the first spinoff film in the franchise, takes place between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. Directed by Len Wiseman, the movie recently had its premiere, and the early reviews on X (Formerly Twitter) have been very positive. Even Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning star and de Armas's rumoured partner, Tom Cruise, praised the film. The story takes place after the third film, where Wick was last seen falling from the Continental's rooftop. In the fourth movie, he met the High Table and was believed to have died. While Reeves's character plays a cameo in Ballerina, the main focus will be on Eve Macarro, played by de Armas. She's a skilled fighter who goes on a journey to take revenge for her father's death. To prepare, she trains with the deadly Ruska Roma group. While promoting the final Mission Impossible movie last month, Tom Crusie, who saw the movie earlier, said, 'I saw the movie, it just kicks ass, it's right in that tone, it's right in that Wick world, you're gonna love it." Following the recent premiere of Ballerina, a user wrote, 'This movie is hot. Ballerina delivers the year's best action; one sequence in particular is a fist-pumping inferno. Ana de Armas fits seamlessly into this world as Eve and gives us a spin-off done right. I'm going to need more Ballerina. 'Fight like a girl'." Ana de Armas mows down nameless faces with jaw-dropping gun-fu and grenade-fueled chaos that'll leave your pulse racing. A few story-related elements fall short, but John Wick's cameo never overshadows our central heroine, whose classic revenge quest carries the right amount of intensity. This is the spin-off we didn't know we needed, and I'd love to see more." #Ballerina doesn't just earn its place in the John Wick universe… it explodes onto the scene like a perfectly timed grenade, expanding Wick's world beautifully. Fans will also see Anjelica Huston as the Director, Ian McShane as Winston Scott and the late Lance Reddick as Charon. Norman Reedus joins as Daniel Pine, and Gabriel Byrne plays the main villain, the Chancellor, who uses an entire town to try and stop Eve. The movie is scheduled to release on June 13. Does 'John Wick 5' Come Next After 'Ballerina'?
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." THE franchise is going strong. Now spanning five movies and a TV series (and counting), it's clear that this is not only a violent, unique, and action-packed world, but one with just about endless possibilities. In fact, the latest film, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina (or, as we'll refer to it to avoid that clunky title, Ballerina) is proof that the franchise can explore new ground and succeed even without the titular Mr. Wick himself. Sure, Keanu Reeves is in the movie, but the main character is Ana de Armas's Eve—and watching her kick ass in a Wick-esque manner should fill any Keanu-size holes in your heart in the meantime. It's clear that the Wick franchise will continue from here—it's just unknown in what direction. This is a series and brand that's now been making Lionsgate lots of money for over a decade, and with multiple recognizable stars in the fold, there are a bunch of ways things could go. For example, we know that we could do another John Wick movie, and now it seems more than possible that we could do another Ballerina movie. But there's also a spinoff film coming on the John Wick: Chapter 4 character Caine, played by Donnie Yen, which will also star Rina Sawayama's Akira (Yen will also direct). We've already gone down the road of a prequel; the little-watched limited series The Continental focused on the exploits of a younger Winston (Ian McShane). So that's probably not a road that will particularly be gone down, though Wick director Chad Stahelski and McShane don't think particularly highly of it. So maybe don't rule out some kind of re-do. Again: the possibilities do feel kind of endless. But we know the primary question that everyone is going to be asking after Ballerina—will we be getting John Wick 5? And at this time we do seem to have a pretty definitive answer. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. It picks up the character of "The Director," played by Angelica Huston, who was introduced in Chapter 3, and, perhaps most notably, includes Keanu Reeves as played by John Wick. This is the key part of the equation, considering John Wick dies at the end of Chapter 4. That would seem to signify a closed book, right? But as we've established, the possibilities in this world are pretty endless. Most likely. Despite the titular character's death at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate officially announced that John Wick 5 was in the works at this year's CinemaCon back in April. That being said, director Chad Stahelski is still a little apprehensive that the film will actually get made—because he wants to make sure it's as good as it can possibly be. "Look, everybody seems to want it," he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "It's a matter of whether we crack it. We're actively working on it. It's just … is it going to be satisfying?" Throughout the conversation Stahelski repeatedly suggested that while they're early in the process on John Wick 5, it's still just that—early in the process. And that he hasn't even officially brought the idea to Reeves yet. Stahelski is meticulous, and holds himself to a high standard. And so he doesn't want to proceed with something until it's actually ready to proceed. "If we go down the road of John Wick 5 and build this story and decide this isn't right, there are probably going to be 10 other things we'll discover that we'll use for other things," he says. Which implies it still could not happen. But, he says, sooner or later, it probably will. "The studio would very much will it into existence, I'm sure, at some point," he says. "Look, they've been great and they've asked us to really try and we have a really good couple of ideas and we're going to try." But still, they are very early on. And it seems like for now the Caine spinoff, which has Donnie Yen attached to star and direct, Rina Sawayama attached to reprise her Akira character, and Mattson Tomlin attached to write, is much further along in production, and will certainly come first. Now that much truly remains to be seen. But it would feel like kind of a missed opportunity if it didn't, right? Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas are both bona fide movie stars, and scenes between the two of them are action magic. Let's say Wick 5 opens up with John Wick fighting his way up from hell. Might be a little tricky for him to meet up with Eve down there, but once he gets back to the surface, it feels like a pretty good bet that we'll see these two together (and with guns at each other's throats) again.
