REVIEW: ‘Ballerina,' is a violent dance for revenge

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Given that its a spinoff in the world of the ever-popular John Wick franchise, 'Ballerina' lives up to expectations.
That's the review.
Rating: R – for reasons obvious to most, but just in case, strong violence and language.
Runtime: 2 hours, 4 minutes.
Still here? Well, thanks, I'll expound a little bit.
If you're a fan of John Wick, then you'll be pleased with this effort here by the spinoff.
Ana de Armas is a convincing assassin 'From the World of John Wick,' and the action set pieces structured around her character's revenge tour are well executed.
The story and character development are each as thin as a veil, but that's the standard for these movies. John Wick got back into the business after his dog was killed; Eve Macarro (Armas) becomes an assassin to avenge her father. Once the revenge plot is set in motion in these movies, they really move from point A to Z at the speed of a thumping heartbeat.
For reference, 'Ballerina' takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. Wick does appear in the film (which is revealed in the trailer), and he is as cool as usual. Keanu Reeves can probably play this character in his sleep at this point.
To say more on the action pieces, they are elaborate and ever-present. While stuntman/filmmaker Chad Stahelski did not direct 'Ballerina,' the action here gives fans what they're looking for.
Personally though, the John Wick movies aren't my thing because of how much violence they contain, combined with bare story elements that make the characters doing the violence harder to care about.

DirecTV just gave its live TV streaming service a serious upgrade

DirecTV makes our cut as one of the best live TV streaming services, but it's got a major flaw — it's expensive. To overcome this and bring in more cord-cutting customers, the cable alternative launched Genre Packs back in February. These packs offer a smaller, more affordable genre-focused channel selection, and often even include a streaming service subscription. Now, DirecTV is adding a new Genre Pack to its current offering, and including a decent amount of channels to two of its existing packs without raising prices (for now). As of yesterday (June 26), you can now sign up for MyKids, DirecTV's fifth Genre Pack. For $19.99 a month, you get 12 family-friendly channels, including Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Disney Channel. You also get a free Disney Plus Basic subscription, which is normally $9.99 just on its own. If you already have the MyEntertainment Genre Pack, there's good news for you, too. DirecTV has added BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, POP, TV Land, and VH1, all at no extra cost. MySports subscribers are also getting a boost from Paramount, with existing and new customers now getting access to CBS Sports Network and your local CBS station (local station availability in select markets only). Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Here's a full breakdown of the five Genre Packs that DirecTV now offers: Additionally, all Genre Pack subscribers get access to the DirecTV app, unlimited DVR recording and MyFree DirecTV, the company's free streaming service. If you just want a narrow selection of channels, it's a reasonable deal, and we're even considering reviewing the Genre Pack experience separately from DirecTV (formerly DirecTV Stream) because of the increased value these provide. Definitely consider it as an option if you're looking to cut the cord. Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. Tom Cruise Walked Out on First Wife ‘Overnight,' Claim ‘Sources'

Tom Cruise reportedly ended his marriage to his first wife, Mimi Rogers, abruptly. As reported by RadarOnline, a 'source' told them that the 'Top Gun' star created animosity between him and Rogers due to his obsession with 'purity and discipline.' The news came in the middle of the dating rumors between Cruise and the 'Blonde' actor, Ana de Armas. Tom Cruise allegedly had an obsession with 'purity', which created a lot of disagreement and strain in his married life with his first wife and actor Mimi Rogers. Per RadarOnline, a 'source' claimed that the 'Mission: Impossible' actor 'doesn't talk about Mimi – ever.' The person continued, 'But anyone who knew him back then knows she was the one who changed everything.' His first marriage reportedly still has a massive impact on his life and love life at present. As reported by the news outlet, Tom Cruise and Mimi Rogers met each other at first at a party. 'The Rapture' actor was quite established in Hollywood at the time. Meanwhile, Cruise was allegedly an up-and-coming actor in the industry. Per 'insiders', the two felt an instant and 'intense' connection between them. A former agent told the news outlet, 'She had this magnetic, almost spiritual pull on him.' The person continued, 'Mimi had the brains, the looks, and the belief system – Tom was hooked.' In the meantime, a Hollywood executive who used to work with the former couple claimed that Tom Cruise 'was obsessed with purity and discipline – that drove a wedge between them.' According to the friends of the star, Mimi Rogers was 'blindsided' by their separation in 1990. An 'insider' said, 'He basically walked out on her overnight.' The person further explained, 'It wasn't about another woman at that point.' 'It was about control, image, and the Church,' they added. Teaser Trailer for Ron Howard's Survival Thriller EDEN with Sydney Sweeney, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and More — GeekTyrant

Here's a new teaser trailer for director Ron Howard's upcoming film Eden , which is a survival thriller that comes with an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, and Daniel Brühl. The movie is based on an unsolved mystery that unfolded on a remote island in the Galapagos, and it charts the lengths humans will go in pursuit of happiness. It's inspired by two different accounts of the same true story, and the film is described as 'a darkly comic tale of murder and survival, set around a group of eclectic characters who abandon civilization for the Galapagos. They are all searching for the answer to that ever-pressing question that plagues us all: what is the meaning of life.' In the film, 'Dr. Friedrich Ritter (Law) and his partner Dora Strauch (Kirby) flee their native Germany in 1929, repudiating the bourgeois values they believe are corroding mankind's true nature. On the Galapagos isle named Floreana, Friedrich can focus on writing his manifesto, while Dora resolves to cure her multiple sclerosis through meditation. 'Their hard-won solitude, however, is short lived. They're joined by Margaret (Sweeney) and Heinz Wittmer (Brühl), who also prove to be earnest, capable settlers. Next comes Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn (Armas) a self-described Baroness and the 'embodiment of perfection,' who arrives with two devoted lovers, an Ecuadorian servant, a wardrobe full of evening gowns, and plans to erect a luxury hotel. 'Between inclement weather, unruly wildlife, and a total lack of amenities, all three groups find life on Floreana arduous. But nothing will test their mettle more than the challenge of coexisting with desperate neighbours capable of theft, deception... and worse.' This is a very different kind of film from Howard, who previously helmed Splash, Cocoon, Willow, Backdraft, The Paper, Apollo 13, Ransom, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, Rush, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Hillbilly Elegy , and Thirteen Lives most recently. The screenplay is written by Noah Park ( The Show , Tetris ). The film will hit theaters on August 22, 2025.
