MUAR, July 16 (Bernama) -- The search and rescue operation for a man reported missing after the car he was driving was found submerged in Sungai Tui, Jalan Bukit Kepong, here yesterday evening, has been expanded to a 10-kilometre radius. Zone 4 chief of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department, Senior Fire Superintendent II, Norshuhada Amsari, said that the search for Tengku Nizaruddin Tengku Zainudin, 38, was resumed at 8.50 am today. She said seven firefighters from the Scuba Unit of the Muar Fire and Rescue Station, 11 from the Pagoh Fire and Rescue Station, as well as 26 policemen, are involved in the operation. 'A land search is also being carried out,' she told reporters here today. Meanwhile, the victim's friend, Muhammad Syahmi Mansur, 30, said he and nine others rushed to search for the victim, known as 'Ija', on Monday night after being informed of his disappearance, following the GPS coordinates on his last known location provided by the victim's wife. He said the search could not be carried out at the initial location because it was dark, forcing them to continue searching in other areas. 'The next day, we returned to the location, and that was when we were informed about the discovery of the car. 'I noticed a sticker from Ija's car accessories shop on the rear windshield, and both front side windows were open with the doors unlocked. However, we couldn't locate him due to the murky water,' he said. Yesterday, Muar police chief ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz confirmed the discovery of a Perodua Axia believed to belong to the victim in the river.

Fire destroys eight shops and three cars in Taman Pandan

JOHOR BAHRU: A fire that broke out at Jalan Waja 5, Taman Pandan, destroyed eight semi-permanent shop lots, including a motorcycle workshop that had been operating for 25 years. The workshop owner, who wanted to be known only as Wong, 60, was stunned as he watched his source of livelihood go up in flames in the 5.10 pm fire. 'I left the workshop around 3.30 pm. Not long after, someone called to tell me that the workshop was on fire. By the time I arrived, the flames were already raging. I couldn't save anything,' he told Bernama at the scene, adding that three motorcycles belonging to customers that were undergoing repairs at the workshop were also destroyed. 'Everything's gone. I've been running this workshop for 25 years. I'm truly heartbroken,' he said, adding that he has since contacted the affected customers to inform them of the incident. Meanwhile, the Johor Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Muhammad Syahhir Ikhwan Mohamad Shoib said five shop lots were 90 per cent destroyed, two others suffered 70 per cent damage, while one unit was 50 per cent damaged, and a Proton Wira and two Proton Sagas were destroyed. Southwest monsoon risks haze from open burning in Johor

JOHOR BAHRU: The Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has warned that uncontrolled open burning during the ongoing Southwest Monsoon could trigger haze, affecting both local and cross-border air quality. The peak of the dry season, expected between July and September, heightens risks of forest fires, water shortages, and health hazards. JBPM director Siti Rohani Nadir stated that while this year's monsoon is not extreme due to El Niño's neutral phase, prolonged dry conditions remain a concern. 'The Malaysian Meteorological Department has advised the public to stay alert to health risks like dehydration and heatstroke,' she said. She recommended limiting outdoor activities during midday, wearing appropriate clothing, and staying hydrated. From May to early June, Johor recorded 108 open burning cases, with 103 involving non-peatland areas. Bushfires made up 54.36 percent of incidents, followed by garbage fires (29.11 percent), farm fires (9.98 percent), and timber waste fires (1.89 percent). Only five peatland fires were reported, but these pose greater challenges due to prolonged smoldering. Siti Rohani urged the public to avoid open burning, emphasizing its dangers to health and air quality. She also encouraged immediate reporting of fire incidents to authorities.
