Odisha police releases 25 suspected foreign nationals
Odisha police on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) released 25 persons out of 444 migrant labourers suspected to be Bangladeshi or Rohingya (Myanmar) held in Jharsuguda after ascertaining their Indian nationality. Document verification was still underway late Wednesday evening, as those detained continued to procure their papers through various means, including WhatsApp and physical submission 'Persons with valid documents are already returning or are in process of returning to their place of stay. We urge the public to refrain from speculation and trust the authorities to carry out this process transparently and fairly,' said Himanshu Lal, Inspector General of Police (Northern Range). 'We understand the concerns raised regarding the holding of individuals in Jharsuguda. However, safeguarding national interest and security remains paramount and cannot be compromised. The individuals under scrutiny lack valid documentation to establish their residency or citizenship, necessitating a thorough verification process to ascertain their identity,' said Mr. Lal. He said, 'without verifiable documents, it is imperative to cross-check records to confirm whether individuals are Indian citizens or foreign nationals. This process is critical to protect our borders and ensure the safety of our nation.' 'These individuals are being held in designated facilities with access to adequate food, water, hygiene, and medical care, in line with humanitarian standards,' said IGP According to police, the verification is being conducted meticulously by senior officials via a JIT (Joint Investigation Team), with multiple layers of scrutiny to ensure no Indian citizen is wrongfully detained or harassed. Every effort is made to uphold the rights of Indian citizens while maintaining the integrity of the process. Tankadhar Tripathy, BJP MLA from Jharsuguda, 'the present government is taking decisive action to uphold national sovereignty and safeguard security—measures that were not undertaken by previous administrations. The documents of suspected foreign nationals, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, are being verified in accordance with guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the State government.' 'Those who are able to produce valid documents are being released. The allegations of illegally detaining anyone are baseless. Suspected foreign nationals are being treated with dignity. They have been accommodated on a college premises, not in any detention centre,' said Mr. Tripathy. In May this year, MHA sent a letter to all States saying, 'India, as a matter of policy, does not support any kind of illegal migration or overstay either into its own territory or illegal migration of its citizens to foreign territories. To facilitate orderly migration and timely exit, India has a robust visa and immigration regime in place to enable lawful inward movement of persons including professionals and skilled work force, business persons, students and foreign tourists. However, illegal migration has security and socio-economic ramifications which are often well beyond law enforcement.' The Centre said people overstaying without valid passport or other travel documents or any other document of legal authority should be identified. If suspected Bangladesh I Myanmar (Rohingiyas) national claims Indian citizenship and residence of a place in any other Indian State/UT, the concerned State Government would send the report to concerned home secretary of the State where these foreign

Marco Rubio Tells India To ‘Work With Pakistan', But Govt Stands Firm On Pahalgam Retaliation

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in a call with Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, has 'encouraged India to work with Pakistan to de-escalate tensions" but it is unlikely as India is resolute in its effort to get justice for the victims of the Pahalgam terror strike, senior government officials told CNN-News18. A statement from Jaishankar on his call with Marco Rubio completely skipped the above-mentioned part of Rubio's message. Jaishankar in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said that he told Marco Rubio that 'the perpetrators, backers and planners (of the Pahalgam terrorist attack) must be brought to justice." Marco Rubio in his parallel message to Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif repeated the same message. 'He (Rubio) encouraged Pakistan to work with India to de-escalate tensions and re-establish direct communications," the US State Department readout on Thursday said. India and Pakistan have not had any direct communication since the Pathankot air base terror strike in 2016. India then had allowed a team from Pakistan to come to India and investigate matters but the findings of the same were never shared by Islamabad with New Delhi. Moreover, India has not spoken to Pakistan even as it has reached out to all other nine non-permanent members of the UN Security Council over the last few days. Pakistan is among the ten current non-permanent members of the UNSC. 'Pakistan this time is seeking an 'impartial investigation' into the Pahalgam terror strike on the same lines and is approaching all countries with this proposition. But India is unlikely to agree to any such proposition given our experience in Pathankot in the past," senior officials told CNN-News18. At that time, a Five Member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from Pakistan visited India for four days in March, 2016 to collect, review and document physical evidences and to interview key witnesses and victims, through the NIA, with regard to the Pathankot Airbase terror attack. Pakistan had constituted a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) on 25th February, 2016 under Section 19(I) of its Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, to conduct investigation into an attack on Pathankot Air Force base, in furtherance to a FIR registered at Police Station Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Gujranwala in Pakistan. The Pakistan JIT had then also assured India of their full cooperation and promised to execute the Letter Rogatory which had been received by them from India. Russia-China To Investigate Pahalgam Attack? Why India May Not Agree To Pakistans Demand
Pahalgam Terror Attack: Days after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, tensions have been escalating between India and Pakistan, with both nations downgrading their ties further. While India has alleged Pakistan's hand behind the Jammu and Kashmir terror attack, Islamabad has called for an international independent inquiry into the matter. India is yet to react to Pakistan's remark but China has said that it's closely monitoring the evolving situation. Pakistan's Investigation Call Pakistan's Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has called for an investigation team comprising experts from China or Russia, or from the Western nations, to probe India's claim of Pakistani role behind the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack. 'I think Russia or China, or even Western countries, can play a very, very positive role in this crisis, and they can even set up an investigation team that should be assigned this job to investigate whether India or Mr Modi (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is lying or he is telling the truth,' said Asif. Will India Agree - Historical Stand? India has historically been against third-party mediation or interference in the Indo-Pakistan row. In fact, the Simla Agreement of 1972 also called for mutual solutions to any dispute between the two countries. "That the two countries are resolved to settle their differences by peaceful means through bilateral negotiations or by any other peaceful means mutually agreed upon between them. Pending the final settlement of any of the problems between the two countries, neither side shall unilaterally alter the situation and both shall prevent the organisation, assistance or encouragement of any acts detrimental to the maintenance of peaceful and harmonious relations," says the Simla Agreement. When in 2016, Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists attacked the Pathankot Air Force base in Punjab, India even went to the extent of allowing a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from Pakistan to visit the attack site and collect evidence regarding the attack. Therefore, India is unlikely to allow any third-party mediation this time as well. Why Third-Party Probe Call? The call for third-party mediation is also Pakistan's trick to delay any significant action by India and buy the time to de-escalate the tension. With an international investigation, Pakistan is also trying to come out clean of the mud. With the world nations supporting India against terrorism, Pakistan is finding itself isolated on the global stage with only two countries - Turkey and China supporting it. Pakistan's socio-economic condition is already fragile and it may not afford to enter a long-term war with India. Also, the Pakistani army is facing a credibility challenge as the public as well as opposition members continue to raise their fingers on its working mechanism and interference in the government.

JIT to quiz PTI leaders over smear campaign today
Listen to article Five PTI leaders are supposed to appear today (Monday) before a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) probing a smear campaign launched on social media against state institutions. The JIT has directed Hammad Azhar, Aliya Hamza, Sheikh Waqas Akram, Muhammad Kamran and Farrukh Habib to appear in person at 11am before it. The JIT will convene its meeting at the Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cybercrime Wing Headquarters in Islamabad. According to the notices issued by JIT member and Inquiry officer Mobin Zafar on April 9, there is sufficient material available with the JIT to assume that the PTI leaders are involved or closely acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the matter at hand. "In case of non-appearance, it will be assumed that you have nothing to present or state in your defense. Non-compliance to the matter is punishable under law. Therefore, your willful non-obedience of the order will render you liable for criminal proceedings u/s 174 PPC, 1860," it added. The PML-N led federal government constituted the JIT in terms of Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca), 2016 under the convenership of the FIA Cyber Crime Wing additional director general. The JIT is investigating alleged misuse of social media "for highly intimidating contents/ tweets to create fear/ unrest among the general public and discord against state institutions".

JIT to issue arrest warrants for 20 PTI leaders
In a major development in the ongoing investigation into anti-state propaganda on social media, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has decided to issue arrest warrants for 20 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, sources confirmed on Wednesday. According to sources, the decision was made after the PTI leaders failed to cooperate with the investigation, despite receiving multiple summons from the JIT. Notices were reportedly served at the residences of all individuals concerned. Among those facing arrest are senior PTI figures including Waqas Akram, Hammad Azhar, Zulfi Bukhari, Aon Abbas, Mian Aslam, Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Taimur Saleem, and Jibran Ilyas. Warrants are also expected to be issued for Khalid Khurshid, Shahbaz Gill, Azhar Mashwani and several others. State broadcaster Radio Pakistan earlier reported that the JIT possesses solid evidence against these individuals. The JIT, which is headed by the inspector general of Islamabad, was formed under Section 30 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 to probe anti-state activities linked to social media content. Several prominent PTI figures — including party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Senate Opposition Leader Shibli Faraz, and Imran Khan's sister Aleema Khan — have already appeared before the JIT during the course of the investigation. According to sources, those summoned were questioned extensively about their social media handlers and controversial posts related to the military and state institutions. They were reportedly shown specific content and asked to clarify its origin and purpose. In addition to questions on social media activity, the probe has also delved into the party's financial matters. Barrister Gohar and others were also questioned about party's financing. PTI has submitted complete records related to party funds to the JIT. The JIT had previously warned of strict action against those who failed to appear before it.
