Man arrested in Caloocan after running amok, firing shots

A 59-year-old man, reportedly a retired Philippine marine, was arrested after running amok and firing shots at a group of youth he accused of being drug addicts. According to Sangandaan Police chief Captain Zoilo Lopez, the suspect and his friend were on their way home from a drinking session when he got into an argument with youth, asking if they were drug addicts. This was when he brought out his gun, and fired shots. 'Nadaanan niya itong mga kabataan na ito na kumakain sa isang karinderya at sinita niya ito at ang sabi niya ay napagkamalan niya raw po itong mga adik. So nasagot siya ng isang kabataan, at 'yun po ang dahilan upang bumunot ng baril itong suspect natin at bigla na lang po silang pinutukan,' he said in a report on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. (He came across these young people eating at a roadside eatery and confronted them, saying he had mistaken them for drug addicts. One of them responded to him, and that was the reason for the suspect to draw his gun and suddenly start shooting at them.) The suspect's friend, who was trying to ease the situation, sustained an injury after a bullet grazed his thigh. He was brought home, and did not file any charges against the suspect. The suspect, however, was later arrested by authorities in his residence where the firearm was also retrieved. He faces charges of attempted homicide, and alarms and scandal. 'No comment po, pasensya na po,' he said in the report. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News

NGCP says Emong-affected power lines fully restored

State grid operator National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) over the weekend said it has already restored power lines affected by the continuous rains brought about by Tropical Depression Emong (international name: Co-May). According to the NGCP, the Luzon Grid was normalized after the last affected line—the Bacnotan-Bulala 69 kilo-volt line—was restored at 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, July 26. 'NGCP assures the public that it is continuously monitoring weather disturbances and is ready to activate its OCMC (overall command and monitoring center) should there be any threat to its transmission facilities,' the NGCP said. Emong exited the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday morning, but the state weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon (Habagat) will continue to bring rains over parts of the country. — Jon Viktor D. Signal No. 1 in Batanes as Bising intensifies, may re-enter PAR

Typhoon Danas is on the verge of re-entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and again taking the mantle Bising, PAGASA said Sunday evening. In its 11 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, the state weather forecaster said that Batanes remains under Signal No. 1 due to Bising, while most of the Philippines is expected to experience rains also due to the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat. As of 10 p.m., the center of the eye of Bising was estimated to 335 km northwest of Itbayat, Batanes outside PAR. It is moving northeast at 20 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 150 kn/h near the center, gustiness of up to 185 km/h, and central pressure of 965 hPa. The Habagat and the periphery of Bising are also forecast to bring strong to gale-force gusts to the Ilocos Region, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Quezon, Occidental Mindoro, Masbate, and Romblon on Monday, "especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds," said PAGASA. Some areas have already suspended Monday classes in anticipation of the weather. As it continues northeast, Bising could re-enter the northwestern boundary of PAR Sunday night or early Monday morning, PAGASA added. It is then seen to cross the Taiwan landmass and its center will leave the northern boundary of PAR Monday morning, and eventually be 720 kilometers north northwest of Itbayat, Batanes or in the vicinity of Fujian, China on Wednesday morning. In its separate rainfall advisory, PAGASA said light to moderate rains are expected over Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, and Tarlac, which will affect Zambales and Bataan. Rainfall Advisory No. 2 #NCR_PRSD Weather System: Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) Issued at: 11:00 PM, 06 July 2025(Sunday) Light to moderate rains are expected over Pampanga, Tarlac, Bulacan and Nueva Ecija. Areas in Bukidnon, Davao Region flooded after continuous rains

Some areas in Bukidnon and in the Davao Region were flooded over the weekend due to the strong rains brought about by the southwest monsoon or Habagat, including a residential area in Davao del Sur where a wake had to be moved as waters reached waist-high. A river in Barangay Tacul in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur was recorded to have overflowed with the water spilling over to nearby houses, and forcing a wake to be moved in a nearby gymnasium, as reported by Rgil Relator on GMA's '24 Oras Weekend' on Sunday. Residents of Purok Bankerohan and Purok Kawayan who were trapped in their residences were also evacuated by authorities. Official figures regarding affected individuals have yet to be released. Floods were also recorded in Bukidnon, where zero visibility was reported along the Talaingod Bukidnon national highway. A road along Sitio Saladoc in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental was likewise impassable, due to the debris caused by the rains. The state weather bureau PAGASA said the southwest monsoon or Habagat is expected to continue to bring rains over most of the country on Sunday. — Jon Viktor D. Cabuenas/BM, GMA Integrated News
