Cubs Announce Unfortunate Injury News on Jameson Taillon

Cubs Announce Unfortunate Injury News on Jameson Taillon originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs announced Friday morning, before their July 4 weekend series with the St. Louis Cardinals, that starting pitcher Jameson Taillon would be placed on the injured list. Advertisement According to Craig Counsell, Taillon is dealing with a right calf strain and will be out for some time. Counsell does not expect Taillon back for at least a month. For now, Taillon has been placed on the 15-day IL, and left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks has been recalled from Triple-A to replace Taillon. Taillon is just the latest of pitching injuries for the Cubs' starting rotation. Chicago lost their ace Justin Steele for the rest of the season back in April, and co-ace Shota Imanaga missed a significant amount of time earlier this season. Imanaga had just returned near the end of June, and now the Cubs have lost another starter in Taillon. Advertisement The Cubs were already expected to be in the market for a starting pitcher at the MLB trade deadline, and now the need becomes even greater. Taillon had been a formidable veteran starter for the Cubs in 2025 holding a 4.44 ERA across 17 starts and 95.1 innings. However, his ERA had jumped from 3.48 to 4.44 over his last three starts after allowing 15 earned runs over his last 12.2 innings pitched. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) walks to the mound to make a pitching change during the fifth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Hartline-Imagn Images With Taillon on the injured list, it leaves the Cubs with just two veteran starters in Matthew Boyd and Imanaga, who, although only in his third season, has risen to become a star on the mound. The rest of the Cubs' rotation includes rookie Cade Horton, Colin Rea, and recently called-up Jordan Wicks, who has 17 career starts over his three seasons in the MLB. Advertisement Chicago's starting pitching depth will be tested, and the need at the trade deadline just rose significantly. Cubs Fans Upset After Roster News on Friday

Cubs Fans Upset After Roster News on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jameson Taillon is a right-handed starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs, now in his tenth major-league season after carving out a reputation as a durable arm in the rotation. Advertisement Selected second overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2010 MLB Draft, he battled through Tommy John and hernia surgeries before finally making his big-league debut in June 2016. Taillon spent four seasons in Pittsburgh before being traded to the New York Yankees, where he spent two years in the Bronx. In December 2022, he agreed to a four-year, $68 million contract with Chicago that keeps him under team control through the 2026 season, after which he'll become an unrestricted free agent. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Jameson Taillon (50)David Richard-USA TODAY Sports Through 17 starts in 2025, Taillon has logged 95.1 innings, compiled a 7–6 record, struck out 74 batters and pitched to a 4.44 ERA. Advertisement On Friday, Chicago placed him on the 15-day injured list with a strained right calf—which is expected to sideline him for at least a month—and called up Jordan Wicks to fill the vacancy. Fans were upset to see another pitcher spend time on the IL. One fan wrote, "Need Jordan Wicks to step up and be a back end of the rotation piece." "Honestly, do we have anyone left after Wicks?" a fan asked in frustration. "Out of nowhere… again," said a shocked fan. A fan added, "We're cooked." "Cubs trading for a SP cannot come soon enough," wrote another. The Cubs are currently 52–35, sitting with a commanding four-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers atop the NL Central, so they'll need Taillon to get healthy to help fuel their playoff push down the stretch. Cubs starter Jameson Taillon goes on injured list, will miss more than a month with calf strain

Chicago Cubs starter Jameson Taillon may miss more than a month with a right calf strain, manager Craig Counsell said Friday after the team placed the veteran right-hander on the injured list. Taillon is 7–6 with a 4.44 ERA and a mainstay in the NL Central leaders' rotation despite some ups and downs in his ninth major league season. The 33-year-old has lost three straight games with a 10.66 ERA in that span after winning five in a row. Taillon, who had been scheduled to start Saturday, sustained the injury while running after a bullpen session on Thursday. 'He felt a grab yesterday,' Counsell said. 'He's going to miss a pretty significant amount of time.' The IL move is retroactive to Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Cubs recalled lefty Jordan Wicks from Triple-A Iowa before their game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Wicks is expected to work from the bullpen, although 11 of his 12 appearances for Iowa were starts. He was 1–3 with one save and a 4.06 ERA with the Triple-A affiliate. Wicks appeared in two games with the Cubs in April, pitching two innings and going 0–1 with a 13.50 ERA. 'He's got to come up here and attack the strike zone and get himself in favorable counts … to be effective,' Counsell said. Taillon's injury left the Cubs scrambling to plug another hole in their rotation. Left-hander Justin Steele, an All-Star in 2023 with a 16–5 record, made only four starts this season before undergoing elbow surgery that will sideline him for the rest of 2025. Lefty Shota Imanaga has won two starts since returning from a hamstring strain that kept him out for seven weeks.
