'It's just so random and bizarre.' Josef Newgarden tries to make sense of painful IndyCar season
Despite a run of five DNFs in his last eight IndyCar starts — a stint that includes an Iowa Speedway doubleheader where he was undoubtedly the fastest car in both races, but could only muster second and 10th — Josef Newgarden said he feels 'just as positive as always' and stands firm that his No. 2 Chevrolet Team Penske crew has all of the necessary components to return to his championship-challenging form of his first six years at IndyCar's winningest team. Or at least he's trying to be. Whether the small ounce of doubt he shed light on when speaking to reporters at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca was a self-deprecating attempt at humor or a legitimate concern of whether he'll return to form in the series where he won championships in 2017 and 2019 and finished runner-up three consecutive years from 2020-22, only Newgarden knows. 'I don't even know how to speak to all this. I really don't,' Newgarden said ahead of the 14th round of the 2025 IndyCar season — so far a winless campaign for Newgarden and one that has coincided with the longest winless stretch of his IndyCar career since he delivered that first of 31 wins in 2015. 'I can only control what I can control. I can't imagine it stays like this forever. How could it? But maybe it does. I don't know, I'm not sure. That would be a bummer, but you know what? If it does, though, it's been a good ride. It's been a pretty good ride.' The introspection from Newgarden comes at the tail end of what's been a miserable two-month stretch since the week leading into the Indianapolis 500, where his team and series owner Roger Penske fired his entire IndyCar team leadership trio — team president and Newgarden strategist Tim Cindric, managing director Ron Ruzewski and general manager Kyle Moyer — in the wake of the cars of Newgarden and Will Power being popped by IndyCar's tech inspection team for illegally modified attenuators, the program's second major technical infraction in 14 months in the series Penske owns. After dropping out of the Fast 12 and initially expecting to start 11th, Newgarden and his two-time defending 500-winning crew were dropped to the final row with a 32nd starting spot for the infraction. And after climbing his way into the top 10 by the race's halfway point and charging toward the top 5 with a legitimate chance to make history and three-peat, Newgarden was forced to retire from the race with a mechanical failure. Following a recovery drive on the streets of Detroit to ninth, the 34-year-old who a year ago signed a multi-year extension with his IndyCar home since 2017 experienced something he'd done only once his entire IndyCar career (the other within the first five races of his rookie campaign in 2012): three consecutive DNFs. Their causes were varied: a wrong place, wrong time crash he had no fault in while running up front at World Wide Technology Raceway, an over-aggressive move of his own that turned into a spin and crash at Road America and a Lap 1 incident where he seemed to lock up his tires heading into the first corner of the race, leaving Newgarden skidding off track, ending his day, and collecting Graham Rahal in the process. Tack on back-breaking bad luck — or poor strategy management, depending on who you speak to in the paddock — at Iowa Speedway, races he could've easily swept under the right circumstances, and add another crash Sunday on the streets of Toronto when he had nowhere to go to avoid the walled car of Jacob Abel, and one of the inarguable voices and faces of the sport is left with few words to describe how his racing world has been turned upside down. How O'Ward will celebrate Iowa win: Gifting Josef Newgarden Kit-Kats: 'A lot of salt to get rid of' 'It's bizarre, so bizarre,' Newgarden said. 'I don't even know how to. Let's just take (the Indy 500) as an example. What are we going to do differently that happened race day? It's just so random and bizarre, and that's how 90% of the year's been. I don't know how you react to that. 'I'll be a broken record saying this, but I know exactly what we're capable of. It might not be glaringly obvious on the outside, but it's glaringly obvious to me.' Newgarden was asked whether there was any solace he could take knowing that even a solid multi-win season this year would've been unlikely to deliver his elusive third championship he's been fighting for now for six years and counting. 'That's so hard to answer, because things change so quickly. If we win the Indy 500 this year, I don't know what this year looks like. It's an alternate universe,' he said. 'The cascade of that, the flow of events that happens after something like that, you cannot predict what the year looks like.' From Iowa race weekend: Team Penske has fast cars but 'leave so much on the table' as upsetting season continues Newgarden said he was lucky to escape his Toronto crash a week ago without a broken hand, after the snap of the wheel on impact ricocheted off his hands — a move that often can break wrists, fingers or hands. With four races left on the calendar — all of which venues he's yet to win at in his career, culminating in a season finale hosted by his hometown track in Nashville Superspeedway — Newgarden said it's not overly pertinent for the No. 2 crew to cap the year with a victory and snap his winless streak that sits at 17 races and counting. 'I just want us to do the best job we can within our control. That's what we try to do every weekend and what we continue to do, and the rest will take care of itself,' he said. 'If we're doing that, we should all be happy, and that's what we're going to judge ourselves on. 'It just kinda is what it is at this point, and we just keep moving forward. That's all I can say. We've got a great team and a bunch of the same group that knows how to win championships and 500s, so I feel good showing up to the track with this group.'

INDYCAR Power Rankings: Iowa Winners Alex Palou, Pato O'Ward No. 1 & 2
The two winners of the Iowa Speedway doubleheader are ranked first and second in the power rankings. The driver who won for the seventh time this year is still No. 1. The driver who won for the first time this year is now No. 2. INDYCAR drivers compete on a variety of tracks and move from the relatively short Iowa oval to the final street course of the year this weekend as they head to Toronto. Here's a look at these rankings heading into Toronto: Dropped out: Colton Herta (Last Week: 7); Rinus VeeKay (Last Week: 10) On the verge: Colton Herta, Scott McLaughlin, Will Power 10. Santino Ferrucci (Last Week: 9) Ferrucci had an eighth and a 15th at Iowa, which amounts to an OK weekend for the A.J. Foyt Racing driver. The big thing is that he and Conor Daly battled without drama, as Daly edged him by a spot in the first race and Ferrucci returned the favor in the second. 9. David Malukas (Last Week: Not Ranked) Malukas had a 12th and a fourth in the two Iowa races, a strong bounce back after one top 10 in three of the four races heading into Iowa. This teammate of Ferrucci looked especially strong in the second race at Iowa. 8. Josef Newgarden (Last Week: Not Ranked) Newgarden arguably should have won both Iowa races but settled for a second and then a 10th. The Team Penske driver appeared to have a dominant car but pit road proved to be costly. First, he got beat on the final pit stop and then there the cautions that came out at inopportune times during the green-flag cycles. 7. Christian Lundgaard (Last Week: 5) After a 21st-place finish in the first race, Lundgaard placed sixth in Race 2 to salvage the weekend. The Arrow McLaren driver is likely happy to be headed to Toronto. 6. Kyle Kirkwood (Last Week: 3) After back-to-back wins, Kirkwood had finishes of fourth and eighth heading into Iowa, where he had an awful weekend as he crashed in practice, then again in the first race where he finished 26th. He finished the second race, but the Andretti driver certainly wasn't happy with an 18th. 5. Felix Rosenqvist (Last Week: 6) Rosenqvist rebounded from a 17th-place finish in the first race to finish seventh in the second. The Meyer Shank Racing driver certainly had hoped for more as he qualified in the top three for both races. 4. Marcus Armstrong (Last Week: 8) A ninth and a third at Iowa should make Armstrong feel good, considering his limited experience on ovals. The Meyer Shank Racing driver has finished ninth or better in each of the last six races. 3. Scott Dixon (Last Week: 2) Dixon finished 10th in the first race and then second in the second race at Iowa. That wasn't a bad weekend following the Chip Ganassi Racing driver's first victory of the season at Mid-Ohio. 2. Pato O'Ward (Last Week: 4) The first victory of the season for O'Ward was great for him, and he followed that up with a fifth-place finish in the second race. The Arrow McLaren driver is second in the standings but not close at all to Palou (129 points). 1. Alex Palou (Last Week: 1) Palou had a solid Iowa, with a fifth-place finish in the first race and then a victory (his seventh of the year) in the second race. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver would need an unprecedented collapse to lose the title. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. What Do Josef Newgarden, Team Penske Have To Do To Win Races?
NEWTON, Iowa — Josef Newgarden led a combined 304 laps at Iowa Speedway over the weekend. He doesn't have too much to show for it. Yes, he finished second in Saturday's race. But when a driver leads 232 of 275 laps, that driver believes that a trophy should accompany the effort. On Sunday, he still had arguably the best car but circumstances resulted in him leading 72 laps and finishing 10th. Those results show what everyone has seen all year: Penske cars do have speed but execution and other bad luck have soured their season. After a 2-3-4 finish Saturday with Newgarden, Will Power and Scott McLaughlin, they finished 10-24-26 in the second race of the weekend doubleheader. That was after Power had an engine issue for the second consecutive week and McLaughlin crashed when Devlin DeFrancesco got loose underneath him. "We just have to keep doing what you are doing," Newgarden said. "Team Penske is working incredibly hard. [Saturday] was a good day for everybody. You could see the spirits lift. "They don't need to change what they are doing. They are doing a great job. They brought a fast car here again today." It could be argued that no matter what's occurring, doing the same thing would produce the same results. Power is eighth in the standings, McLaughlin is 12th and Newgarden sits in 14th. "I have zero doubt in our process and what we do," Newgarden said earlier in the weekend after winning the pole for the Saturday race. "I've been here a long time. I've worked with the best of the best. "We have really good people. Still do. And I think the worst thing to do would be to change what our process is. To overreact would be the wrong decision. That's definitely not what we should be doing." Newgarden called this a "unique" stretch. For a proud organization like Team Penske, it certainly isn't easy. Newgarden had a slow pit stop that cost him track position Saturday and then, with another dominant car on Sunday, he had the misfortune of the yellow coming out when he was pitting. On a short track (0.894-mile) such as Iowa Speedway, he lost a lap in the sequence and then, when he got his lap back, he had to rally from the rear of the field. He regained the lead but another somewhat slow pit stop quickly followed by a caution cost him track position late in the race. Newgarden has 31 career victories and hates to lose. So even the second-place finish Saturday was not one that thrilled him. "With this [aero] package I was flat out," Newgarden said about trying to pass Pato O'Ward at the end of the race Saturday. "I couldn't do anything different. He got position, and that was that." As Newgarden was answering questions politely but not with long answers, Power needled him. "Josef loves to answer questions at the moment," Power said. "He's seething. Seething. He didn't win. He was close, man." For Power and McLaughlin, they could feel more of the same this year with good days and bad days. McLaughlin wrecked in qualifying on Saturday, meaning he had to start at the rear for both races. He worked his way from 27th to fourth in the first race, an incredible run. But his race on Sunday ended on the first lap when Devlin DeFrancesco got loose underneath him and they both wiped out. "It's the story of our year," McLaughlin said. McLaughlin could blame himself, as the crash Saturday put him in that position. Power had an engine issue that Chevrolet will look into. "These things come at such inconvenient times, but everyone goes through it," Power said. "It's just one of those things." It obviously hasn't been a smooth year for Penske, which released its three top INDYCAR executives after a technical issue during Indy 500 qualifying was the second significant violation since the start of the 2024 season. Earlier this month, the organization announced that Jonathan Diuguid had been promoted to President of the INDYCAR and sports car programs while Travis Law was named Competition Director for the programs. Both Diuguid and Law had experience in INDYCAR but had been focusing on sports car roles in recent years. The NASCAR leadership did not change. McLaughlin said Friday at Iowa that things do seem settled with the leadership in place. "I wouldn't want to be with another team in terms of when we're down in this right now," McLaughlin said. "With the resources, the people, I really think we're going to be just fine. "It's going to take some time, but I feel like this is meant to happen and we'll get going." The one thing that is important to realize, McLaughlin said, is that all three drivers, when they haven't had the speed they wanted, are fighting similar issues. So where the team is focusing on getting better is across the board of the three teams. "We've had a very good run," McLaughlin said. "It's just matter of maybe it was meant to happen, maybe this was meant to just put us through the hardest point to realize how good it is when we are going well. "That's how I'm looking at it. I'm full of positivity. ... [Other teams] are doing great jobs. We're working hard." Now they need to see the work turn into wins. "We had plenty of potential to win a race all year," Power said. "It is just a strange year." Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. An Ill-timed Caution Ended Newgarden's Chances at Iowa, Alex Palou Captures Seventh Win
Alex Palou has now won on a street course, road courses, the Indianapolis 500, and on a short oval in 2025 to win seven of the 12 IndyCar races this season. Palou started on the pole for the second Iowa race, but the win was far from promised. Penske's Josef Newgarden advanced through the field twice due to being caught on the pitting undercut when cautions came out. When Newgarden went for his second pit stop with 140 laps remaining, Marcus Ericsson hit the wall, and the rest of the field that had yet to pit benefited. He then ran through the field to the lead, and with 20 laps to go, a second Andretti, Colton Herta, hit the wall. With less than 20 laps remaining on the restart, the lapped cars were run through the pits to set up everyone on the lead lap. Newgarden would restart eighth with only 13 laps to go and get trapped away from the podium, and his win drought extended. On the restart, Palou led Marcus Armstrong, a Meyer Shank Racing driver chasing his first win. Palou's teammate, Scott Dixon, made it by for another Chip Ganassi Racing 1-2 in 2025. Saturday's winner, Pato O'Ward, finished fifth behind David Malukas, both pitted just before Newgarden and lost position due to the undercut as well. "We all got hosed by the same thing," O'Ward told IndyCar on Fox.
