The Remarkable Story Of An IndyCar Team Overcoming A Transporter Fire

IndyCar Team Owner Ricardo Juncos The IndyCar Paddock fiercely fights each other on the race track in the heat of battle. But when a team experiences misfortunate away from the track, IndyCar teams and the series rally each other to help those that are impacted. That was the case this week involving Juncos-Hollinger Racing. On the way back from last weekend's IndyCar doubleheader at Iowa Speedway, the transporter carrying Sting Ray Robb's car and equipment caught on fire. According to Chevrolet and the team, here are the details of what happened with a timeline as the team's crew, their competitors, their partners and the series to come together to help them make the race this weekend. Sunday evening at 7 pm: The transporter carrying Sting Ray Robb's No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet, suffered a fire on the trip back from the Iowa Speedway to the team's shop in downtown Speedway, Indiana, which caused fire, smoke and water damage to the equipment and cars. Sunday, starting at midnight through Monday: Between friends and the team, three trailers were dispatched to begin bringing back damaged items, which the non-competition team members set out on tables to dry and start assessing what was salvageable. Monday - The crews for the No. 76 and No. 77 joined together to rebuild the No. 76, while they assessed the damage to Robb's car. Tuesday - Both crews' attention turned to the No. 77, rebuilding the car, which suffered crash damage in the second race at Iowa Speedway. Wednesday - The transporters, including the Juncos Hollinger Racing INDY NXT by Firestone trailer, began the trip north to Toronto. 'We had the situation with the trailer on fire, and it was a huge amount of work overload for everyone at the team,' Juncos Hollinger team owner Ricardo Juncos said. 'But we knew that we needed to work, with no options and things like that could happen. 'So, it actually was good to see the whole team spirit with that moment, when things like that happen. I'm really, really happy with them because what I saw as a team owner, it was mega. Mega! The chemistry, everybody helping each other, at that time was just one team pushing forward, and it was amazing to see. So, that's one side 'On the other side, is all the support from IndyCar. Every single team called us, called me right away, offering trailers, equipment, and whatever. 'From Roger Penske to the last team owner, then the series itself, Dallara, Chevy, I mean, you name it. Even, a lot of fans as well, and that was really, really good to see as a team owner.' String Ray Robb was back in action for Friday's IndyCar practice session on the streets of Toronto as he prepares for this Sunday's Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto. 'I'm appreciative (of the crew), but I'm more impressed, honestly, from what I've seen when these kinds of things happen and it knocks its team out completely,' Robb said. 'But they showed up Monday morning at 8.m. and they were there until about midnight, putting everything back the way it should be. My car still smells like a smoke bomb went off in it, but everything is as it should be. 'Largely in part to the fire department doing their job when they got the call and the state trooper doing his job to call the fire department ahead of time and everyone that was involved, I think they're the reason that we're here today. 'So, to the first responders, thank you and then to the team, thank you.' Conor Daly at Toronto. Teammate Conor Daly also spoke about how the whole team was impacted by the fire, especially coming during a crucial five-races-in-four-weekends schedule. 'Honestly it certainly is not helpful for us,' Daly said. 'I think you know mainly for just the crews that have been already working non-stop every weekend and showing up no matter what and showing up when the hours are added to the schedule to clean out a fire. 'That's crazy so we appreciate them. 'There's no easy way to go about it. We are at a tough spot, and we are just going to try our best to bounce back and get through it.'

Juncos Racing truck catches fire on the way back from Iowa Speedway

After a race day that didn't end as the team had hoped — with a late caution denying what could have been a top-five finish for the No. 76 car of Conor Daly — Juncos Hollinger Racing encountered an even bigger issue on the return trip to their headquarters in Indianapolis. The team, led by Ricardo Juncos, was traveling on Interstate 74 when the hauler carrying both cars and all of Sting Ray Robb's equipment caught fire. Advertisement The incident, which fortunately caused no injuries, started in the truck's rear axle for reasons still under investigation by the team, has learned. The vehicle, which came to a stop about four hours from Indianapolis, will be thoroughly inspected upon its return to the JHR shop to assess the damage. However, there are concerns it may no longer be usable. The incident comes at arguably the worst time of the season. Following two consecutive race weekends in Mid-Ohio and Iowa Speedway, the IndyCar Series shows no signs of slowing down, with the next round taking place this weekend in Toronto, Canada, followed immediately by Laguna Seca and Portland. Advertisement To meet its upcoming championship commitments, Juncos Hollinger Racing will use a hauler provided by Andretti Global. The team is now working tirelessly to ensure everything is ready for departure to Toronto on Wednesday. "A tough end to our Iowa weekend, both on and off the track," said the team in an official press release. "After an early retirement for the #77 car, our hauler caught fire on I-74 while heading back to the shop. It was a scary moment for the team, but thankfully, everyone is safe, and that's what matters most. "We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, messages, and well wishes from fans, fellow teams, IndyCar officials, and the entire racing community. It's a reminder of the incredible family we have in this sport. Advertisement "We are assessing the damage and will be working hard to get back on track. Thank you again for everything. Your support fuels our determination!" Sting Ray Robb's trailer catches fire on interstate after Iowa doubleheader. What we know

Sting Ray Robb crashed out of the second race at Iowa Speedway during IndyCar's doubleheader weekend. And his hauler caught fire on the way home, the team announced. It was a tough IndyCar weekend for Sting Ray Robb and his No. 77 Juncos Hollinger Racing team at Iowa Speedway, and it continued on the drive back to the team's shop. A video surfaced on social media Sunday evening of the Juncos Hollinger trailer stopped with firetrucks behind it. The team confirmed Monday that the trailer caught fire. "Our hauler caught fire on I-74 while heading back to the shop," the statement read. "It was a scary moment for the team, but, thankfully everyone is safe, and that's what matters most. "We've been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, messages, and well wishes from fans, fellow teams, IndyCar officials, and the entire racing community. It's a reminder of the incredible family we have in the sport." The team said it did not yet know the damage, seemingly leaving the possibility it may not be ready for on-track action Friday in Toronto. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. "We're assessing the damage and will be working hard to get back on track," the team said. Robb finished 22nd in Saturday's Synk 275 to start the doubleheader weekend after he qualified 24th (178.885 mph). He then finished 23rd in Sunday's Farm to Finish 275 after crashing on Lap 50. He also qualified 24th (177.683 mph).

NEWTON, Iowa — In the wake of three consecutive DNFs, including four of his last five (two on ovals), Josef Newgarden snatched pole for IndyCar's first race of a doubleheader weekend at Iowa Speedway on Saturday afternoon, at a track where he's won six times in his career and where Team Penske has won eight of the series' last nine visits. Newgarden's 19th career IndyCar pole award — his first since Race No. 1 at the Milwaukee Mile last season — made him the ninth different polesitter this season in IndyCar. Alex Palou, who nabbed pole for Sunday's Race No. 2, is the only driver in the series to have claimed more than one pole in 2025, Sunday's being his fourth of the year and the 10th of his IndyCar career. The 27-car field completed qualifying for both the weekend's races at one time Saturday, making two-lap runs with Lap 1 slotting the field for Race 1 and Lap 2 for Race 2. The session's biggest moment came as Newgarden's Team Penske teammate Scott McLaughlin crashed just moments after taking the green flag for the first lap of his run, sliding through Turns 1 and 2 and eventually backing it into the outside wall. By virtue of not completing a lap and being the only car to crash in the session, McLaughlin, who won in Race 1 of IndyCar's doubleheader at Iowa Speedway last year, will start last (27th) for both races. Newgarden and Palou will swap spots for the weekend's race's, as both will start on the outside of Row 2 (fourth) for the race in which they don't start on pole. Meyer Shank Racing's Felix Rosenqvist will also start on the first two rows for both races (third for Race 1, second for Race 2), having sat on provisional pole for Race 2 until the closing moments of qualifying when Palou laid down the top lap of the session to take the top spot. Juncos Hollinger Racing driver Conor Daly, who sat on pole at Iowa Speedway in 2020 while racing for Carlin, joins Newgarden on the front row for Race 1 as he continues to search for his first career IndyCar win, having registered his second career IndyCar podium e a year ago on a the Milwaukee short oval and run up near the front in both IndyCar oval races in 2025. He'll start Race 2 seventh. Other drivers starting in the top 10 for both races this weekend at Iowa Speedway include Pato O'Ward (fifth for Race 1, ninth for Race 2), Scott Dixon (sixth for Race 1, eighth for Race 2), Will Power (seventh for Race 1, sixth for Race 2), Nolan Siegel (eighth for Race 1, fifth for Race 2) and David Malukas (10th for Race 1, third for Race 2). Follow live: IndyCar Synk 275 at Iowa Speedway Race 1 live results, crashes: Josef Newgarden on pole Outside McLaughlin's crash and Newgarden's resurgent pole, perhaps the most surprising storyline from qualifying on Saturday came with the relatively lackluster pace across the board from Andretti Global, who won two of IndyCar's last three oval races with Colton Herta (last year's race at Nashville Superspeedway) and Kyle Kirkwood (World Wide Technology Raceway last month). Marcus Ericsson (15th for Race 1, 14th for Race 2) will pace the team for both races, with Kirkwood (18th for Race 1, 21st for Race 2) and Herta (23rd for Race 2, 19th for Race 2) both starting outside the top 20 once this weekend. Here are the starting grids for each race. 'You feel that intensity.' Will IndyCar return to Iowa Speedway? Pivotal weekend may decide future Race 1 at Iowa begins at 5 p.m. ET. 1.
