Farmers' raise concerns over renovation works disrupting cultivation in Thoothukudi
The meeting held at the district collectorate was chaired by Thoothukdi Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting, the collector addressed various grievances submitted by the farmers.
At the meeting the farmers requested to organise an agricultural exhibition in Thoothukudi district. They also urged the immediate release of funds for crop damage caused by December 2024 floods and compensation for chillies and shallots, which were damaged during the 2023 floods. They noted that Vilathikulam and Sivagnanapuram region farmers still await the compensation.
The farmers further highlighted the integrated plan to control weed in rainfed areas. They demanded an increase in the procurement price of milk and to hike the salaries of the milk cooperative society employees. In addition, they called for uninterrupted supply of quality seeds and fertilizers, and urged the withdrawal of requiring a CIBIL score for issuing agricultural loans.
A request was also made for the establishment of a storage facility at Melachekkarakudi for storing black gram, green gram and maize. Framers suggested that government-subsidised hybrid coconut saplings, which are said to yield higher income, should be demonstrated on fertile lands with farmers taken for exposure visits.
Addressing the grievances Mr. Elambahavath said that agricultural exhibitions are conducted at zonal level. This year, it is scheduled to be held in Tirunelveli, and farmers from Thoothukudi district will be invited to participate.
The assessment of the December 2024 flood related crop damage has been completed and a proposal sent to the government, which includes ₹59 crore for agricultural crops, ₹14.6 crore for horticultural crops and compensation for banana crops damaged by gale in the last April. Relief for crop damage during the 2023 floods is still pending and is expected shortly.
He added that assessment will be conducted to control weeds in rainfed areas and things such as milk procurement price, reducing rental charges of agricultural equipment are under government policy decisions. If special schemes are introduced, efforts will be made to offer concessions to farmers.
The Collector further noted that the delay in water release at some places was due to essential renovation works and has advised the PWD officials to plan such activities. Measures will be taken in the future to prevent such delays and ensure that any infrastructure work disrupt any farming activities.
Officials from Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Horticulture Department, Public Works Department were amongst those present.

Farmers urge government to revoke order linking credit score to crop loans: Report
Pointing to hardships in securing crop loans ahead of the cultivation season, a section of farmers in Erode has urged the State Government to withdraw the order requiring the use of credit scores for granting agricultural loans. Members of the Keel Bhavani Murai Neer Pasana Vivasayigal Kootamaippu and the Keel Bhavani Ayacut Nila Urimaiyalargal Sangam submitted a petition to Minister for Housing, Prohibition, and Excise, S. Muthusamy, at his office on July 18, reported The Hindu. The petition pointed out that farmers are already struggling due to poor pricing for their produce and erratic weather conditions. While low-interest and interest-free farm loans have helped reduce financial burden, a recent circular from the State Registrar of Cooperative Societies (RCS) has caused concern. The circular mandates verification of farmers' CIBIL scores before sanctioning agricultural crop loans. Additionally, another directive requires farmers to obtain a no-objection certificate (NOC) from service area bank branches before availing loans from cooperative societies. 'Obtaining an NOC costs between ₹ 600 and ₹ 1,000, placing an unnecessary financial burden on farmers,' the petition stated. The petition strongly opposed the linking of CIBIL scores and the NOC requirement, calling both measures 'burdensome' and demanding their immediate revocation. The Minister assured the farmers that the matter would be brought to the attention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. With water release from the Bhavanisagar Dam into the Lower Bhavani Project canal expected on August 15, 2025, farmers have urged the government to act swiftly and roll back the new directives. Association president S. Periyasamy, secretary K.V. Ponnaiyan, federation secretary R. Eswaramoorthy and other office-bearers were also present. JDA yet to complete ROB, railway plans new project
1 2 Jaipur: At a time when the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) is yet to complete the construction of barely 700 metre long Civil Lines Railway Overbridge (ROB), there are plans to construct another ROB connecting Bani Park and Hasanpura sides of the railway station. Although experts are apprehensive about major chaos along the railway station if both constructions continue simultaneously on both sides of the Ajmer Road Puliya, JDA officials have claimed that they are trying their best to complete the construction of the Civil Lines RoB before the construction work for the proposed RoB starts. "We set a revised deadline of Dec this year to complete the construction of Civil Lines ROB. Even if we miss the deadline, we are hopeful to complete the Civil Lines ROB before railways start the construction work for the proposed ROB. It would take a few more months to commence the construction of the proposed ROB," stated a JDA official. Officials of the civic body made it clear that North Western Railway (NWR) would construct this proposed ROB connecting Ram Mandir on Bani Park side and Jal Mahal Chouraha in Hasanpura. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo JDA and PWD would only help the railways to allocate lands on the Bani Park side near the Ram Mandir. On the Hasanpura side, railways would utilise lands of its own colony. Recently, during a Projects Work Committee meeting of JDA, the civic body sanctioned the GAD (General Arrangement Drawing) of the project, giving its approval to railways to construct the ROB. "Earlier, there were plans to construct an underpass jointly by the railways and the public works department (PWD). But in the feasibility report, it was mentioned that an underpass is not viable. So, now it has been decided to construct a ROB instead," said an official. This would be the fifth means to cross the railway line within a stretch of around 4km between the Bais Godam and Bani Park Ram Mandir. Out of the remaining four, the Civil Lines flyover, the Ajmer Road Puliya and the Railway Station Puliya (connecting the ITC Rajputana Hotel and Jal Mahal Chouraha) are already operational. JDA is constructing the ROB at the Civil Lines Phatak. "The Hasanpura side of the railway junction is getting a major facelift. Once the renovation work is over, a huge footfall of passengers is expected on the Hasanpura side of the railway station. This proposed ROB can reduce traffic pressure on the Railway Station Puliya to a great extent," said a PWD official.
