Initial reacts to College Football 26, plus CFB's hardest rivalry to rank

Until Saturday Newsletter 🏈 | This is The Athletic's college football newsletter. Sign up here to receive Until Saturday directly in your inbox. Today in college football news, this week's audio fixation is 'To Someone Else' by Kacy Hill. Last night at 1 a.m., my daughter was semi-sarcastically cheering her heart out for a two-star center from Hawaii to finally agree to take his talents to the University of Delaware for the next 10 months or so. Why was she so invested? Because his name is 'Junior Mama.' We simply couldn't miss on a guy with that name. Advertisement And why just 10 months or so? Because on default settings, College Football 26's transfer portal is absolutely merciless toward small schools — making Dynasty mode feel like a Dark Souls-ass challenge for the first time in series history, pleasing those of us who want roster management to deliver fighting-for-my-life panic sweats. (You can tone down the max number of players who can leave each school per season.) My other favorite stuff so far in the game that releases on Thursday: And the stuff I hope can be fixed, in this life or the next: Overall, this game made a thousand little improvements, and for now, I'd end this mini-review by giving it a A-. Oh right, that includes the gameplay itself. The actual football parts are noticeably better in just about every way, from having much fuller control over substitutions to RECEIVERS ACTUALLY COMING BACK TO THE BALL 🍾🙌📈. Almost forgot about those parts. This week, Scott Dochterman took on the difficult challenge — both in terms of the studying required beforehand and the inevitable internet hollering afterward — of ranking college football's 100 best rivalries. I think Scott's top five is as close to indisputable as can be, with the only potential disputes in this opening cluster being the order of its middle three: It might seem odd to include that No. 5 game among the other no-doubters, considering it's been mostly skippable for a while now. But the OG interregional rivalry has altered so much CFB lore. On that note: One of the coolest things about Scott's list is how it mixes history (former Game of the Year machine Nebraska-Oklahoma at No. 6 even though they've barely met since 2010) with recency (Alabama-LSU at No. 13 despite that series being nothing special until Nick Saban coached each side). It's after that obvious top five when the fun really begins. That's when all the quibbles happen! Everybody's gonna have a few! In a followup explainer, Scott addressed both his detailed research process — and the hardest snubs, led by the frequently lopsided Michigan State-Ohio State. As for the feuds that made the cut, I had one question for him: What was the hardest rivalry to rank? 'No. 25 Bedlam, by far. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were ranked in 19 of their matchups and three times battled in the top 10. They played for 114 consecutive years. Those numbers are almost identical to Michigan-Michigan State. But Bedlam's win-loss disparity was shocking. Oklahoma owns a 71-win advantage (91-20-7) and has gone 55-10 when at least one side has been ranked.' It's true. For a long time, all Bedlam had to offer as a supposed top-shelf rivalry was a cool name (more on that name below). But then in 2023, the Cowboys won what might be the final edition, so now it's retroactively a great rivalry. Regardless, here's Scott's full list again. Now it's your turn. Proclaim your No. 1 rivalry, and list your top 10. Here's my top 10 as of today — and I think I'm mostly good with this order, too: 😡 More rivalry! Chris Vannini explains his 25 picks for the best rivalry names in all of college football. 💰 Texas Tech's lengthy NIL splurge has gone from fodder for 'yeehaw oil money' jokes to 'OK, hang on, everybody pay attention to this.' 🐏 'Travis Burgess, the 17-year-old son of a retired U.S. Army captain.' As soon as I saw those words in Bruce Feldman's profile of Bill Belichick's QB prospect, I felt pretty good about the young man's chances. 🍀 Speaking of sons, prepare to feel old: Notre Dame's list of a million sons of former players now includes a commitment from three-star WR Devin Fitzgerald, son of Larry. Oh, and there's more: 🅾️ 'Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione will retire this upcoming school year, he announced Monday, ending the longest active tenure for an AD in major college sports. It will also end the run for one of the most successful and respected administrative voices in college sports.' That's it. Email me at untilsaturday@ to tell me which new rivalry has the most potential to become great in this (currently) post-realignment era. Last week, your emails informed me Billy Napier will be this season's first head coach to be fired, and reader Lance argued the Big Ten is actually a somewhat accurate conference name, since it is indeed 'Big.' Last week's most-clicked: Seth Emerson on why Georgia Tech is good again. 📫 Love Until Saturday? Check out The Athletic's other newsletters, too.

Dark truth about loved-up Lorde pics revealed as insiders spill all to The Sun about ‘man-stealer's brutal blow'

SHE'S known for her chart-topping hits about the euphoric highs and devastating lows that come with falling in love. And Lorde's latest relationship drama should provide her with plenty of material for her next album. The singer appeared to make her new romance with music producer Jim-E Stack public at Glastonbury last weekend, with the couple spotted with their arms around each other watching The 1975 headline the Pyramid Stage on Friday night, as revealed by The Sun. The double Grammy award-winning singer had played a surprise set at Worthy Farm earlier in the day, when herself and Stack were seen getting close on stage during their performance. But the loved-up pics sparked a bitter backlash online - led by Stack's "fuming" ex-girlfriend, US singer Kacy Hill. Kanye West's former backing dancer-turned-singer took to TikTok to subtly claim her music maker ex-boyfriend ended their six-and-half-year relationship for Lorde, after the pair collaborated on her new album Virgin. Mindful of the singer's passionate fan base, Kacy, 31, resisted the temptation to give Lorde, 28, a blatant blasting on social media. Instead she posted a video which shows her slow clapping alongside the caption: 'Let's hear it for the man who ended my 6.5 year relationship while making a girl's album then started dating her,' to the soundtrack of Lorde's single Man of the Year. Meanwhile observers are suggesting that Lorde has form for dating her producers. Her romance with Stack comes eight years after the singer, who has recorded three UK Top 10 albums, struck up a rumoured romance with another producer, Jack Antonoff, who was behind her 2017 album Melodrama, while he was dating actress Lena Dunham, 39. Lorde and Stack had previously been snapped snuggling up together on a park bench in New York in October last year. According to insiders, Kacy is quietly fuming and believes Lorde broke 'girl code'. Lorde Teases Secret Glastonbury Set Amid New Album Release 12 12 A source said: 'Kacy feels let down by both Jim and Lorde. 'Six-and-a-half years is a long time and for their relationship to end in this way is hard to take, it's a real blow - especially as he's left her for another singer. 'But in regards to Lorde it's down to girl code, which she has dismantled big time. 'She doesn't seem to care about Kacy's feelings, which has been hard for her to take.' Kacy, meanwhile, has continued to reassure fans over her well-being following the break-up, posting light-hearted videos about how bagels are cheering her up, while also attempting to construct a narrative her relationship with Stack 'certainly wasn't working' when he hooked up with Lorde. Sources close to the New Zealander insist there was no crossover. But that did little to quell the rumour mill, particularly as on one of the songs on the album - Current Affairs - she sings about the emotional distress from an illicit relationship. But, as alluded to earlier, there is enough evidence to suggest Kacy would be rightfully concerned over her partner working on an album with Lorde. Lorde has only recently split from her boyfriend Justin Warren, who was 17 years her senior. I had this feeling that I had never been alone... There'd always been someone, not even necessarily a romantic partner. And often that was an older person. I was always choosing someone to be God Lorde She first met Justin in 2009, when Lorde was a teenager signed to Universal Music, where he is an executive, in her native New Zealand. In 2015 they were rumoured to be dating, and while they never spoke about their romance - in 2016 Justin labelled speculation they were dating as 'ridiculous' - he was often by her side. Lorde, real name Ella Yelich O'Connor, confirmed she went through a "painful" breakup in 2023 during an interview with Rolling Stone, admitting: "It continues to be a relationship that I cherish." She told the magazine: "I had this feeling that I had never been alone... There'd always been someone, not even necessarily a romantic partner. And often that was an older person. I was always choosing someone to be God." 12 12 Lorde is rumoured to have grown close to producer Jack Antonoff - 13 years her senior at 41 - during the making of her second album in 2017, while she was still believed to be with Justin. He had been in a relationship with Tiny Furniture star Lena, but the pair had started to drift due to the lack of the time they were spending together, as the actress was a key part of Hillary Clinton's Presidential campaign trail. There were rumours that several of the tracks on the album were about Jack and Lorde's blossoming romance, including Green Light - which Lorde said herself she was inspired to write after attending a concert with the producer. Another track which raised eyebrows was Sober, explained by the singer in this Tweet: 'I'll never forget writing the first demo it was like a trance I guided Jack to the chords almost wordlessly with my hands on his shoulders.' The rumours intensified when a fan created a PowerPoint presentation, which went viral, attempting to prove a legitimate romantic link between the two collaborators, which featured some compelling viewpoints. Jack and Lena split in the December of 2017, just months after Melodrama was released. In February 2018, Lorde and Jack were spotted looking very cosy in her hometown, Auckland, after they were snapped with her arms wrapped around him, both sporting huge grins. Lorde and Lena were once very close, even living together at one point, but in an interview with The Cut in November 2018 the Girls star revealed she hadn't spoken to the singer since her and Jack split. Lena told the publication: "I don't think anything happened between them. I can never know someone else's life. I have never spoken to Ella [Lorde] about it. We haven't talked since Jack and I broke up. "It was awful, and I couldn't do anything about it except trust that what he was saying to me was true." The pair broke their silence on the speculation, which at this time was in overdrive thanks to that PowerPoint presentation, by releasing their own statements on the alleged romance. Jack tweeted shortly after they were spotted in Auckland: 'Normally I would never address rumors but I resent having the most important friendships and working relationships in my life reduced to dumb hetero normative gossip. 'Those relationships are deeply important and sacred. With that said, I'm not seeing anyone. lol.' The following month Lorde attempted to set the record straight herself, during an Instagram Live, saying: 'Guys, Jack and I are not dating, for the last time. 'I love him, he's awesome. But we're not dating! Please!' Love song In April that year, on the Melodrama tour, Lorde sang a love song - a cover of St Vincent's New York - accompanied by Jack on guitar and the pair enjoyed flirty banter on stage during a performance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Fans remain convinced something went on between them eight years on, believing her electro-pop anthem What Was That, released in April, was her own Taylor Swift-style breakup song about Jack, mainly thanks to these lyrics: 'Yeah, I'm missin' you / And all the things we used to do. 'We kissed for hours straight, well, baby, what was that?' For the cynics out there, Lorde's new relationship with Stack was revealed just as her new album Virgin was released. Last week Stack posted a tribute to Lorde on Instagram, writing: "There's no one I'd rather be in the trenches with. Eternally grateful for the journey together. Love you forever Ella." Arguably it's all handy timing for some much needed publicity. Not that Lorde really needed it, as she garnered global attention by dropping a bombshell claim during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in May regarding her gender identity, revealing: 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man.' It's unlikely spurned singer Kacy will see that as an excuse for burning girl code. 12

Lorde's latest 'love triangle': As singer's new partner leaves his girlfriend of six years, the scandalous rumours of star's past with Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham are resurfaced by fans

From Fleetwood Mac to Eric Clapton, some of the best art has come out of messy love triangles - and Lorde, who has a new album out, is rumoured to have been embroiled in not one but two romantic feuds over the years. As the musician, 28, recently 'went public' with producer Jim E-Stack, 33, with the pair reportedly packing on the PDA at Glastonbury over the weekend, his ex Kacy Hill, 31, appeared to hint that he left their six-and-a-half-year relationship after working on the New Zealand singer's record. The savage dig was reminiscent of yet another amorous 'rivalry' between the Kiwi artist, industry mogul Jack Antonoff, 41, and his former girlfriend Lena Dunham, 39. But while all the parties have denied bizarre speculation that the Bleachers front-man cheated on Lena with Lorde, some dedicated fans are still convinced something happened - with one even creating a detailed PowerPoint to make their case. The document - which insisted that Lorde's album Meodrama (produced by Jack and recorded largely in the apartment-dash-studio he shared with Lena) offered an insight into the alleged 'affair' - went viral. In a series of rambles, it posited that Lorde and Jack got together in April 2016; just months before Jack and Lena's split in December 2017, after five years of dating. The slides also included a 'timeline', stating that Lorde and Jack met sometime around 2014 to 2015, whereas Jack and Lena are understood to have started their relationship around 2012. It summarised reports - made in January 2018, which claimed that Jack was 'seeing someone else', as per US Weekly - as well as the follow up that just one month later, he and Lorde were spotted looking cosy and hugging while strolling in her native Auckland, where his band was opening for Paramore. Speaking to The Cut in 2018, Lena praised user @buzzkillary, who was behind the project. 'Actually, I completely respect this girl, because she did a very good job and she was very funny,' she quipped - albeit admitting that 'it was so embarrassing'. 'It was awful because I felt like a weird... I don't think anything happened between them. I can never know someone else's life. I have never spoken to Ella [Lorde] about it,' she continued. 'We haven't talked since Jack and I broke up. It was awful, and I couldn't do anything about it except trust that what he was saying to me was true.' Jack and Lorde, meanwhile, have both rubbished rumours that anything romantic between them ever happened, both taking to social media that same year. 'Normally I would never address rumors but I resent having the most important friendships and working relationships in my life reduced to dumb hetero normative gossip,' the producer penned. 'Those relationships are deeply important and sacred. With that said, I'm not seeing anyone. lol.' 'Guys… Jack and I are not dating, for the last time,' Lorde also wrote on X. 'I love him, he's awesome, but we're not dating! Please!' In July 2021, Lorde went so far as to tell Ash London Live on Australia's Hit Network that she sees him as a 'platonic husband'. 'Jack's and my relationship is really deep and is like a marriage in some ways - a platonic marriage,' she explained. 'We're in it for life I think at this point. We've been very close for five or six years now. We don't seem to get sick of each other. But who knows, anything could happen.' Lorde set the record straight once again, a few months later, in an interview with The New York Times. She had hit back at the 'growing narrative' concerning her connection Jack following his involvement in her album Solar Power that year. The singer, whose real name is Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, said it was 'insulting' and 'sexist' for critics to refer to Solar Power as 'a Jack Antonoff record'. 'I haven't made a Jack Antonoff record. I've made a Lorde record and he's helped me make it and very much deferred to me on production and arrangement,' she added. 'Jack would agree with this. To give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting.' Lorde then criticised the speculation surrounding her personal relationship with Jack, as well as the idea she's part of his so-called 'stable' of female collaborators. She called the discussion around the subject - which has also included speculation about the pair's romantic and sexual life - 'retro' and 'sexist'. Needless to say all seems to be history - as Jack married actress Margaret Qualley in 2023, while Lena wed musician Luis Felber in 2021. Lorde meanwhile, looks to have confirmed romance rumours with producer Jim E-Stack over the Glastonbury weekend. According to The Sun, the Teams hitmaker was spotted 'getting close with the musician on stage' after playing a surprise set at the Woodsies stage on Friday. It was also reported that the pair were seen 'with their arms around each other while they watched The 1975' and went on 'partying until well after 4am'. MailOnline contacted Lorde's representatives for a comment at the time. Amid the blossoming romance however, Jim's ex-girlfriend Kacy Hill - an American singer - appeared to throw shade as in a TikTok she revealed that her six-and-a-half year relationship came to an end when he started working with Lorde on her single Man Of The Year. 'Let's hear it for the man who ended a 6.5 year relationship while making a girl's album then started dating her,' she quipped. A source told the publication: 'Lorde is really happy with Jim after they bonded making the album. 'But there was no overlap and she was very respectful.' The Royals singer and Jim were previously linked in October 2024 when the pair were seen making a rare public outing in New York. At the time, Lorde wasn't been pictured with her music executive boyfriend Justin Warren since March 2023. The pair began fuelling rumours they are working on a new album together after Jim-E shared a photo of Lorde to Instagram in August. Last weekend at Glasto, he singer - who previously graced The Pyramid stage in 2022 - performed all of her biggest hits from Ribs to Green Light, as well as a rendition of her new album. Wearing her jet black hair down, Lorde sported an all-white look for the occasion consisting of a pair of straight leg jeans and a plain T-shirt. While belting out her lyrics, Lorde put her abs on full display as she lifted her T-shirt up to reveal her bra. She later stripped out of the T-shirt, laying bare her impressive figure and sending thousands of supporters wild. 'Moooorning', she greeted the crowd, 'this is sick'. And it seems her performance didn't disappoint, with a host of festival-goers taking to X to praise the popstar. Supporters described the show as 'out of this world', 'utterly euphoric' and 'brilliant'.
