Tension near Srivilliputtur due to stone-pelting incident
Two persons, including Special Sub-Inspector of Police Karuppasamy, were injured in a stone-pelting incident between two groups at Achamthavizhthan near here on Tuesday night.
The police said that the SSI suffered bleeding injury on his nose and the woman Shenbagavalli, 35, sustained head injuries.
They have been admitted to different private hospitals.
Police picketing has been posted in the area to prevent any further untoward incident.
The police said that a group of people belonging to a Scheduled Caste community had gone to offer worship at a local Kaliamman temple on Tuesday night.
People belonging to a caste Hindu community had objected to it.
A wordy quarrel erupted between the two groups and it suddenly turned worse with both sides pelting stones at a each other in which the duo were injured.
Vanniyampatti police have booked cases against 17 persons each on both sides.
They have been booked for rioting, wrongful restraint, attempt to murder and using foul language.
While the police have booked the caste Hindus under the provisions of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), the people from other group have been booked under the provisions of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act, 2025.
