To fight e-fraud, Goa cops seek details of ‘high value' sr citizens
Panaji: With an increase in cases of senior citizens falling prey to cyber fraudsters, Goa police on Saturday sought details from banks of senior citizens who are high-net-worth individuals, to protect them better. Goa police are taking proactive measures to safeguard the elderly population from cybercrime by engaging directly with them and providing the necessary information and guidance. In a letter to banks, cybercrime SP Rahul Gupta said that in recent months, digital arrest frauds have shown a worrying rise, with fraudsters particularly targeting senior citizens with high net worth. 'Fraudsters posing as law enforcement or govt officials are deceiving victims into transferring large sums of money under the pretext of involvement in fabricated criminal cases,' he said. 'To proactively address this menace and initiate timely preventive awareness efforts, it is requested that your branch kindly share a list of customers who are senior citizens, maintaining bank balances exceeding Rs 10 lakh, along with their name, residential address, age, and contact number. ' Gupta said, 'This information will solely be used for the purpose of conducting a direct awareness outreach, including personal visits, official communications, and community programmes aimed at educating these vulnerable citizens about such cyber fraud tactics.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kamiq 130 Edition. Škoda Scopri di più Undo While investigating cyber fraud cases, Goa police observed that senior citizens are especially susceptible to cybercrimes because generally their digital literacy is limited, they have a trusting nature, they are lonely although financially stable, and they lack immediate support. Over the past nine months, 36 senior citizens were defrauded by cybercriminals. Police said that with the increasing digitisation of banking, communication, and day-to-day services, senior citizens have become soft targets for cybercriminals. 'In Goa, a sizable number of senior citizens have become victims of cybercrimes. From Sep 2024 to date, a total of 36 senior citizens were cheated by fraudsters, and of them, 15 victims faced the trauma of the digital arrest scam ,' Gupta told TOI . Last month, Goa police arrested a Karnataka resident in alleged connection with a major cyber fraud case involving an amount of over Rs 1 crore. The case was registered at the cybercrime police station based on a complaint lodged by a resident of Old Goa. In Nov last year, Kumar Utlasar, 50, a Bengaluru resident, was arrested by the cybercrime cell of Goa police in connection with an alleged high-value investment fraud worth Rs 2.3 crore. A complaint in this case was filed by a resident of Valpoi, Sattari. Goa police on Friday busted an interstate gang for allegedly targeting senior citizens under the pretext of helping them at ATMs to withdraw cash. Police said that the gang members, on the pretext of assisting the ATM users to withdraw cash, took their original cards and handed them fake ones. The criminals then used the original cards at different ATMs to withdraw cash.

Sharad Pawar: Why insist that celebs have voice on Hindi imposition
Kolhapur: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said celebrities such as cricketer Sachin Tendulkar should not be insisted upon to express their views on making Hindi a must in Maharashtra school curriculum through National Education Policy 2020. "Ask Sachin about cricket; don't force him to take a stand on Hindi imposition," the veteran politician said in Kolhapur on Friday. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray announced a march in Mumbai on July 5 against Hindi as a compulsory language for students in state schools from Class 1. Although NCP (SP) has declared support to the July 5 Mumbai protest march, Raj Thackeray said he wanted to see who — especially Marathi artists and sportspersons — turn up and who do not for the march. "I don't know what Raj Thackeray meant by that. Why should one insist that Sachin Tendulkar puts his views across (on the issue of Hindi imposition)? I can understand if he is asked to share his views about cricket. Don't ask such personalities about issues not related to them. The issue of imposition of Hindi is important for us. Someone seeking their views and saying 'will see who comes for the protest and who does not' is not good," Pawar said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kamiq 130 Edition. Škoda Scopri di più Undo At the receiving end of criticism after issuing a govt resolution on a three-language policy from Std I last week, state govt in a partial rollback on Thursday said the third language would be taught orally, in Stds I and II, with no textbooks given to students and tests or exams. The NCP (SP) chief added, "Teach Hindi in state schools from Std V. Ignoring Hindi is also not good, as around 55% of people in the country speak the language."

Jeff Bezos educational qualification and career path: How this Princeton graduate built Amazon and flew to space
Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez As billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos's marriage to journalist Lauren Sánchez unfolds today in Venice, attention is once again drawn to the staggering journey of the man who transformed the way the world shops, reads, and even thinks about space. The ceremony, which had to be relocated due to protests over overtourism, now takes place in the historic Arsenale complex in Venice's Castello district, as reported by The Guardian . Bezos's rise is inextricably tied not only to his staggering wealth and business empire but also to a formative academic foundation, one that laid the blueprint for an audacious career that redefined e-commerce, cloud computing, and private space exploration. Early curiosity and academic brilliance marked his childhood Born Jeffrey Preston Jorgensen on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bezos was raised by a teenage mother and, later, by his adoptive Cuban-American father, Mike Bezos. His childhood was defined by curiosity, mechanical inventiveness, and time spent on his grandfather's Texas ranch, where he learned the value of self-reliance. He displayed a strong aptitude for science and technology early on — once installing an electric alarm to keep his siblings out of his room. While attending Miami Palmetto High School, Bezos worked at McDonald's and earned accolades including being a National Merit Scholar and a Silver Knight Award winner, according to The Miami Herald . by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kamiq 130 Edition. Pensato con quello che desideri, di serie. Škoda Scopri di più Undo He also attended the Student Science Training Program at the University of Florida. In his valedictorian speech, Bezos proclaimed his dream of colonizing space and turning Earth into a "national park" — a quote that would later mirror his ambitions with Blue Origin, his aerospace company. Princeton University shaped his tech-first mindset After high school, Bezos enrolled at Princeton University in 1982. He initially majored in physics but later switched to electrical engineering and computer science — a pivotal decision that steered him toward the digital revolution. As he later admitted during a 2018 talk at the Economic Club of Washington, D.C., he abandoned his physicist dreams after being bested in a math problem by a fellow student. Bezos graduated summa cum laude in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi, and served as president of the Princeton chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS). He was also a member of the Quadrangle Club and graduated with a reported GPA of 4.2. Wall Street to a garage: Bezos's unconventional career launch Post-Princeton, Bezos was courted by major firms like Intel and Bell Labs but began his career at Fitel, a fintech firm, before moving into banking at Bankers Trust. He eventually landed at hedge fund D.E. Shaw & Co., where he rose to senior vice-president by age 30. But it was a road trip from New York to Seattle in 1994 that changed everything. Armed with a business plan written in the car, Bezos founded Amazon in a garage — originally a humble online bookstore. Supported by a $300,000 investment from his parents, Amazon grew into the world's largest e-commerce and cloud computing empire, spawning entire industries and altering consumer behavior globally. A space pioneer with a 1982 dream realized In 2000, Bezos founded Blue Origin, citing the same passion for space travel he voiced in high school. By 2015, the company's New Shepard rocket had reached space and landed back on Earth successfully. On July 20, 2021, Bezos himself flew into space aboard NS-16, a milestone that made his childhood vision real. As reported by CNBC , Bezos has sold billions in Amazon stock to fund Blue Origin's ambitions, vowing to move industry off Earth and protect its natural environment.
