Woman, 81, Was Last Seen Driving Home in May. Her Human Remains Were Likely Just Found, Son Says
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Jerry McConnell was last seen on May 14 in Missouri and driving to her home in Overland Park, Kan. McConnell's car was found abandoned in Cowley County, Kan., on May 20 Authorities announced that human remains during the search for McConnell were found on June 11, about 1 mile from where her vehicle was previously locatedOfficials said human remains were found during the search for a Kansas woman who went missing last month. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said in a May 17 news release that a Silver Alert was issued for Jerry McConnell, 81, of Overland Park, Kan. According to the bureau, McConnell was last seen in Harrisonville, Mo., on May 14, and driving a grey 2009 Honda Accord to her Overland Park home. Authorities also noted that she may have been near Severy, Kan., on May 15. Then on May 20, according to a news release from the Cowley County Sheriff's Office shared with PEOPLE, deputies were notified that a vehicle associated with the Silver Alert for McConnell was found abandoned on private property in a rural area near the 4000 block of 327th Road in Cowley County, Kan. Daily searches for McConnell were conducted since the discovery of the vehicle, but to no avail, authorities added. Then, on Wednesday, June 11, while searching the area of 333rd Road, authorities came across human remains about 1 mile from the location where McConnell's vehicle was earlier located, said the Cowley County Sheriff's Office. McConnell's personal belongings were also discovered. 'An autopsy is pending to confirm the identity of the remains,' the Cowley County Sheriff's Office said in its statement. 'We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all those who contributed time, resources, and support in the effort to locate Jerry over the past three weeks. Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family during this difficult time,' the department added. Rick McConnell, identified by Fox affiliate WDAF, The Kansas City Star and the Johnson County Post as the victim's son, wrote in a Facebook message that authorities informed him that a body presumed to be that of his mother was found. 'Conditions indicate Jerry likely passed not long after she abandoned her vehicle in the remote location,' Rick wrote. 'The Family wishes to express our gratitude and appreciation for the tireless efforts of both the Cowley County Sheriff's Department and the Overland Park Police Department,' Rick further added. 'Unless you have personally experienced such an unfathomable situation, you cannot comprehend the enormous efforts such an operation entails.' Garden City man gets 13 Years for racketeering, murder
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. (KSNW) — A Garden City man has been sentenced to more than 13 years in prison for leading a multi-year racketeering operation that included drug trafficking, theft, and the 2020 murder of Alexander 'AJ' Perez, whose body has never been found. On May 27, Oscar Corrales Jr. was sentenced to 156 months — or 13 years — in the Kansas Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to engaging in a pattern of racketeering activity. Judge Rebecca J. Faurot handed down the sentence as part of a plea agreement between Corrales and prosecutors. No charges for officers in shooting of Haysville man Investigators say Corrales was at the center of a criminal operation that spanned several years and counties, involving the systematic theft of cars, tools, electronics, and the distribution of methamphetamine and fentanyl. According to court records, Corrales and his associates would steal vehicles and then either switch their vehicle identification numbers using wrecked cars with clean titles or dismantle the stolen vehicles for parts. Prosecutors said Corrales murdered Perez to protect his illicit operation. He reportedly accused Perez of stealing property that Corrales had previously stolen from others. Perez was reported missing in December 2020, and authorities believe he was killed around Dec. 6 of that year. Despite an extensive investigation, his remains have never been recovered. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation continues to seek information about the location of Perez's body. Anyone with knowledge is urged to contact the KBI. Man suspected of shooting Lee's Summit police officer arrested in Kansas
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Thomas Eugene Tolbert, the man suspected of shooting a Lee's Summit police officer in Missouri, has been found and arrested in Kansas, prompting the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to cancel its Blue Alert. Download WDAF+ for Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV The alert was issued while law enforcement was searching for Tolbert, who allegedly shot a Lee's Summit officer while police were investigating a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex Sunday night. The KBI canceled the alert after Tolbert, 27, was found and arrested in Ellis, Kansas, early Tuesday morning. According to KBI, law enforcement received information Tuesday indicating that Tolbert might be inside a hotel in Ellis on Washington Street. Around 4:50 a.m., KBI agents, Ellis County Sheriff's Office deputies, and Hays Police Department officers arrived at the hotel and safely took Tolbert into custody, per KBI. Tolbert was arrested on a Missouri warrant for first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest or detention by fleeing and second-degree domestic assault. The charges were filed Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court in connection with the shooting. Lee's Summit police shooting suspect arrested at Ellis hotel
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) has now canceled the Kansas Blue Alert that was issued after law enforcement were searching for a suspect believed to have shot a Lee's Summit police officer Sunday night. The alert was canceled Tuesday morning, June 3, after Thomas Eugene Tolbert, 27, was located and apprehended in Ellis. In the early morning hours, law enforcement received information indicating that Tolbert might be inside the Days Inn hotel at 204 N. Washington St. The Ellis Police Department said witnesses reported giving Tolbert a ride from Kansas City, Missouri. The witnesses stated that they didn't know Tolbert was wanted in connection with the Blue Alert, but found the information when scrolling through social media. They immediately contacted law enforcement. Officers from the Hays Police Department, deputies from the Ellis County Sheriff's Office and KBI agents arrived at the hotel and safely took Tolbert into custody at around 4:50 a.m. Ellis police said nearby hotel rooms were evacuated during the incident. After a brief struggle and taser deployment, Tolbert was taken into custody. Wichita police search for suspect in deadly convenience store shooting He was booked on a Missouri warrant on suspicion of assault first-degree or attempted serious physical injury, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, resisting arrest or detention by fleeing, and second-degree domestic assault. He was booked into the Ellis County Sheriff's Office Jail. A Blue Alert is used to help find violent criminals who have killed or seriously injured an officer in the line of duty. Suspect in hospital after police shooting in Kansas City, Kansas
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An investigation has begun after Kansas City, Kansas police shot at a suspect early Monday morning. KCKPD said officers responded to a domestic disturbance around 3:30 Monday morning on North 78th Street. According to KCKPD, when officers were at the scene, they were involved in a shooting with a male suspect. KCKPD said the suspect was taken to a hospital where he is recovering from the shooting, and no officers were injured in the shooting.
