Widow of martyr seeks euthanasia over ongoing land dispute

1 2 Jhunjhunu: In a plea for justice, widow of an Army martyr reached Jhunjhunu collector's office Tuesday to return her honours and request permission for euthanasia. Om Kanwar, the 55-year-old widow of Naik Surendra Singh, hailing from Chinchdoli village in the district, expressed her despair over an unresolved land dispute that has persisted for eight months, leaving her feeling harassed and neglected by the local authorities. Naik Singh was a member of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, who lost his life in Sri Lanka on May 29, 1998. In her memorandum to the administration, Kanwar detailed a troubling incident that occurred on July 19, 2025, when neighbours allegedly invaded her agricultural field with the intent to seize it. Despite filing an FIR, she claimed that the police have taken her case lightly, demanding witnesses that she, living alone, cannot provide. Kanwar's situation deteriorated further when a false molestation charge was filed against her elder brother-in-law's son shortly after she protested the encroachment. In her emotional memorandum, she wrote, "I am completely broken, exhausted from running around police stations and offices in the hope of justice." She reported ongoing threats from the encroachers, who have allegedly begun constructing buildings on her land despite a stay order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Making history: These 5 timepieces set world records at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 CNA Read More Undo The widow's anguish was palpable as she highlighted the struggles faced by a lone martyr's widow against powerful adversaries. "How can I, a lone martyr's widow, fight against these people?" she lamented. She requested that if justice is not served, the school named after her martyr husband in the village should be renamed, signifying her disillusionment with the system. Additionally, Kanwar requested permission for her son, Havildar Narpat Singh, currently stationed in Gulmarg, to visit her, as well as the right to have her last rites conducted on her land. "I have been wandering for justice for eight months. Now, I see no option other than euthanasia," she stated. Jhunjhunu Superintendent of Police, Brajesh Jyoti Upadhyay acknowledged the ongoing land dispute, confirming that cases had been registered from both sides and that the matter was currently under investigation. As the situation unfolds, the plight of Kanwar raises critical questions about the support and protection afforded to the families of martyrs in the state and the efficacy of the justice system in addressing their grievances.
