Work of 2nd Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge over B'putra to start soon, tender expected next month
1 2 Guwahati: Work on the second Saraighat rail-cum-road bridge over the Brahmaputra in Guwahati will start soon, with tenders to be opened next month, followed by work allotment, officials said on Saturday. While this major infrastructure project was sanctioned during the FY 2023–24 with an estimated cost of Rs 1,473.77 crore, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday said the bridge is targeted for completion by Dec 2029. This bridge at Saraighat has been sanctioned as part of the doubling of the Agthori–Kamakhya railway line under NFR. "The geotechnical investigations have been completed for the design of the substructure and superstructure, and an EPC tender has been floated for the construction of the bridge, including approach roads, rail viaducts, earthwork, and ancillary works. The tender is expected to be finalised soon, and construction work will start immediately after that," NFR chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said. As part of the progress, he informed that detailed estimates were sanctioned by the Railway Board in Feb 2024, and the design drawing and report was finalised and duly approved by the competent authority in March 2025. The project includes the construction of a 7.062 km-long stretch from Agthori on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra to Kamakhya on the southern bank, featuring a 1.3 km-long steel composite girder bridge over the Brahmaputra. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo NFR, in a statement, said the upcoming bridge will be designed with a double-line railway track on the lower deck and a three-lane roadway with footpaths on the upper deck. "The north-end approach of 2.694 km will connect to Agthori station, while the south-end approach of 3.07 km will connect to Kamakhya station," it added. Railways is hopeful that once completed, the new bridge will significantly enhance line capacity in the section, which is poised for industrial growth. "Besides improving connectivity, the project is expected to create substantial employment opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers in the surrounding areas," read the statement. The Union cabinet in Feb last year approved six multi-tracking projects across Indian Railways to facilitate ease of travelling, minimise logistics costs, reduce oil imports, and lower CO2 emissions. The Agthori-Kamakhya section with the new rail-cum-road bridge approved at a cost of Rs 1,650.37 crore was one of them. Projects are expected to increase the existing line capacity of the sections, causing a smoothing of train operations and improved punctuality as well as wagon turnaround time. They will facilitate a reduction of congestion and an increase in rail traffic, officials said.

Train services partially restored in parts of NE after 5-day disruption
Guwahati: After five days of disruption due to landslides, the train services between south Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram and the rest of the country via Guwahati partially resumed on Friday, officials said. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the Agartala-SMVT Bengaluru Humsafar Express and Silchar–Guwahati special train are being run for the benefit of stranded passengers. He said that trains running in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section have been disrupted due to the falling of huge earth, muck, boulders, etc, in huge quantities from the adjoining hills over the railway track between Mupa-Dihakho stations of Lumding Division. Due to ongoing restoration work in Assam's mountainous Dima Hasao district, train movements are being regulated on this section. Though the clearance of landslides and restoration of railway tracks was underway on a war footing manner, the Railway officials have not yet confirmed when normal train services would be restored in the region. According to NFR CPRO, train operations on the single line railway track have been suspended until full clearance of debris to ensure safety. Northeast Frontier Railway officials and senior engineers are continuously supervising the restoration work at the site and machines and adequate manpower were mobilised for the early restoration of train services, he said. Help desks have been opened to facilitate passengers at Guwahati, Lumding, Silchar, Badarpur and Agartala stations. Since June 23, the railway network of southern Assam comprising Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi districts, along with Dima Hasao district, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram has been cut off from the rest of the country for the third time, due to landslides. After a week of disruption due to landslides in the same Lumding-Badarpur hill section, regular train services between Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and the rest of the country via Guwahati fully resumed on June 30. Vital train services in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of the Lumding division have been disrupted since June 23 after landslides hit the railway track in the same mountainous areas. Again, after a day's disruption due to landslides, normal train services in the region resumed on July 4. During the monsoon period from June to September every year, several northeastern states, especially Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam, remain cut off from the rest of the country for weeks because of landslides, waterlogging and damage to railway tracks, leading to severe hardship for the people of the region.

Northeast Frontier Railway working on war footing to restore rail connectivity in Lumding-Badarpur hill section
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 25 (ANI): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is undertaking restoration works on a war footing to reinstate train services in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section, where rail connectivity has been disrupted due to a major landslide incident. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that approximately 100 meters of track had been severely affected by the landslide, which was triggered by the failure of a slope near an adjacent road situated just 15 meters from the railway line. 'The incident occurred due to continuous heavy rainfall in the region. A high-level meeting was convened on June 24, 2025 to address the issue, attended by the Chief Secretary of Assam, General Manager of NFR, and senior officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and other concerned agencies. During the meeting, a coordinated restoration scheme was finalised, and joint operations are currently underway. More than 25 heavy machinery units, including excavators, JCBs and dumpers, along with approx 200 labourers, have been deployed to expedite the restoration process. Senior officers from the Lumding Division, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Lumding, are present at the site to monitor and ensure round-the-clock operations,' Sharma said. He further said that, despite the ongoing efforts, challenges remain. 'The slow and continuous movement of loose soil from the hillside, coupled with persistent rainfall, poses significant risks and delays. The priority is to first stabilize the hill slope, followed by the removal of around 25,000 cubic meters of muck and debris. This includes clearing the railway track section as well as the vulnerable portions of the hill above the track. Protection measures will then be implemented to guarantee long-term safety and slope stability. Until restoration is completed, it has been decided to cancel/partial cancel certain trains for the safety of passengers. Passengers are requested to stay updated through official railway communication channels for further information regarding train movements and restoration of services,' Sharma said. Panbazar road overbridge to be ready by July: NFR
Guwahati: Construction of the Panbazar road overbridge (ROB), which began last year, is expected to be completed by July, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) officials said. The bridge is likely to ease traffic congestion in the Paltan Bazar and Panbazar areas, two of the city's oldest cosmopolitan areas. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "As of now, concretisation work on the bridge's approaches is going on. But most of the work has been completed, including laying the foundational structures, significant fabrications, and placing the bow string girders. Advanced sub-soil strengthening through geo-cell technology has also been completed. The project is expected to be complete by July this year," said Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, chief public relations officer, NFR. The construction work of the ROB has not been progressing on a smooth note. The CPRO said the presence of the fire brigade station posed a challenge in the stacking of construction materials, limiting workspace efficiency. Approximately Rs 48 crore in cost, the project was undertaken by a Kolkata-based construction company to facilitate the smooth movement of the electric locomotives as part of the NFR's ongoing electrification process, where high-voltage lines have been installed. However, the old ROB, which was built in 1965, had turned into a 'dead wire zone'. The area under the bridge was a neutral point, and since it was not charged, it restricted the speed permanently to 15 km/h. As a result, locomotives approaching Guwahati railway station failed to maintain the required momentum, causing them to halt in that area. "Waterlogging also used to be a recurring challenge, especially during heavy rains, causing signal failures and disruptions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now With the necessary adjustments to this project, the lifted track levels will prevent waterlogging, ensuring smooth operations even during monsoons," Sharma said. He added that the new ROB will aim to address the limitations of its predecessor while introducing significant enhancements. With a span of 60 meters, it will provide improved vertical and horizontal clearance. It will also feature a three-lane wide road replacing its two-lane limitations, which will increase its capacity to handle higher volumes of road traffic as well, thus ensuring a smoother transportation system for commuters.
