Train services partially restored in parts of NE after 5-day disruption
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said that the Agartala-SMVT Bengaluru Humsafar Express and Silchar–Guwahati special train are being run for the benefit of stranded passengers. He said that trains running in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section have been disrupted due to the falling of huge earth, muck, boulders, etc, in huge quantities from the adjoining hills over the railway track between Mupa-Dihakho stations of Lumding Division.
Due to ongoing restoration work in Assam's mountainous Dima Hasao district, train movements are being regulated on this section. Though the clearance of landslides and restoration of railway tracks was underway on a war footing manner, the Railway officials have not yet confirmed when normal train services would be restored in the region.
According to NFR CPRO, train operations on the single line railway track have been suspended until full clearance of debris to ensure safety. Northeast Frontier Railway officials and senior engineers are continuously supervising the restoration work at the site and machines and adequate manpower were mobilised for the early restoration of train services, he said.
Help desks have been opened to facilitate passengers at Guwahati, Lumding, Silchar, Badarpur and Agartala stations. Since June 23, the railway network of southern Assam comprising Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi districts, along with Dima Hasao district, Tripura, Manipur, and Mizoram has been cut off from the rest of the country for the third time, due to landslides.
After a week of disruption due to landslides in the same Lumding-Badarpur hill section, regular train services between Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and the rest of the country via Guwahati fully resumed on June 30. Vital train services in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section of the Lumding division have been disrupted since June 23 after landslides hit the railway track in the same mountainous areas.
Again, after a day's disruption due to landslides, normal train services in the region resumed on July 4. During the monsoon period from June to September every year, several northeastern states, especially Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur and southern Assam, remain cut off from the rest of the country for weeks because of landslides, waterlogging and damage to railway tracks, leading to severe hardship for the people of the region.

Vande Bharat Express Stranded For 7 Hours In Odisha As Rains Flood Tracks
Torrential rains in Odisha's Keonjhar district on Saturday brought life to a standstill and severely disrupted railway services, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded aboard the Vande Bharat Express for nearly seven hours. The high-speed train, which was en route from Tatanagar to Berhampur, came to a halt around 7 PM at Guhalidiihi station after heavy waterlogging submerged the railway tracks. Nearly three feet of water was reportedly flowing over the tracks, making it unsafe for the train to proceed. Passengers were forced to remain inside the stationary train for hours. No serious health issues or injuries were reported. Railway authorities said that the safety of passengers was their top priority and assured that no untoward incident occurred during the ordeal. With no immediate improvement in the waterlogged tracks, the railway department eventually dispatched a rescue engine to tow the train to Kendujhargarh station. The Vande Bharat Express finally resumed its journey late at night, over seven hours behind schedule. The administration has been urged to improve response mechanisms during extreme weather events, especially as rainfall continues to affect multiple districts in Odisha. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several parts of the state including Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar, forecasting extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the next 24 hours due to a low-pressure area formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha. A yellow alert is in place for 17 other districts, predicting heavy rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds. In the Northeastern part of the country, train services connecting South Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, and the rest of India via Guwahati were restored on July 4 after being disrupted by a landslide in Assam's Dima Hasao district. The Lumding-Badarpur Hill Section had been blocked by boulders and debris between Dihakho and Mupa stations. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) carried out overnight restoration work, with the Agartala-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express being the first train to pass through the cleared section.

Bairabi-Sairang line: Decade-long endeavour to connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to rail network
Once operational, people can travel to Aizawl via Silchar by train, enjoying the natural beauty, cultural diversity, rolling hills and dense forests of the state, known as the 'Land of the Hill People'. 'The line is ready with the approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CSR) and very soon, it will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi,' a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official said. New Delhi, Jun 28 (PTI) The completion of the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang rail line, which is set to connect Mizoram's capital Aizawl to the country's rail network, involved overcoming immense geographical and logistical challenges. Officials said the line establishes Mizoram as the fourth northeastern state with its capital city linked to the national railway network. According to the NFR, the line has 48 tunnels covering 12.853 km, 55 major and 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges and nine road underbridges, with one of the bridges numbered at 196 boasting of a height of 104 metres — 42 metres taller than the Qutub Minar. 'The new line will not only bring benefits to the people of Mizoram through improved transportation and accessibility, but also enhance regional mobility, along with boosting local tourism,' the NFR said. 'The path-breaking operation will also stimulate commercial activities, economic development and strengthen train connectivity across the northeastern states, generating employment opportunities and promoting small-business growth near stations and goods sheds,' it added. Talking about the commencement of the project, a senior official said Modi remotely unveiled the plaque for the new rail line from Bairabi to Sairang at a ceremony held at the Maligaon Railway Stadium on November 29, 2014. He added that the complete rail line was commissioned in four phases — Bairabi-Hortoki (16.72 km) commissioned in July 2024, Hortoki-Kawnpui (9.71 km) in June 2025, Kawnpui-Mualkhang (12.11 km) in June 2025 and Mualkhang-Sairang (12.84 km) in June 2025. 'The final stretch of the Bairabi-Sairang new line railway project, from Hortoki to Sairang, was thoroughly inspected by the CRS, Northeast Frontier Circle, between June 6 and June 10. This marks a significant milestone as it completes the entire 57.38-km rail line, paving the way for direct rail connectivity to Aizawl for the very first time,' another official said. The CRS authorised the operation of freight and passenger trains on the newly-laid broad gauge line between Bairabi and Hortoki on August 22, 2024. 'The revised sanctioned cost of the project is approximately Rs 5,021.45 crore,' the official said. PTI JP RC This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
