Chandigarh: Mandatory entrepreneurship course under PU board review

Even as the Punjab government has written to all vice-chancellors of universities in the state to start a mandatory course on entrepreneurship mindset from the 2025-26 session, Panjab University (PU) will take this up with their board of studies to see how this can be implemented. Punjab government will create a multilingual digital platform for real time monitoring and execution of the course load. (HT photo for representation) An advisory has been sent out by Punjab secretary department of higher education and languages, Anindita Mitra regarding this. A working group on higher education reforms constituted by Punjab has recommended the need for this course. The group was chaired by Karamjit Singh, V-C of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and the government of Punjab has accepted this recommendation. As per the committee, the universities are advised to roll out the Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum as a mandatory course for every undergraduate student in every semester of their degree programme. Each student must work on a business or service idea in every semester, refine and execute it, and demonstrate progress against defined semester-wise benchmarks. These benchmarks include parameters like viability, innovation and revenue generation. The universities will evaluate the students based on real-world performance. As a phased rollout strategy, it has been recommended that this be implemented for BTech, BCom, BBA and BVoc degrees for 2025-26 and for other UG courses in the next academic session. Punjab government will create a multilingual digital platform for real time monitoring and execution of the course load. As per the working group report, a semester wise breakdown on the course includes defining your niche and understanding marketing through content creation for the first semester. Other semesters will include earning from content, ads and collaboration, expanding clientele and using AI for content ideas, writing and posting. The group noted that to understand business, the students will have to actually do the business. In the first semester, they will be expected to generate a revenue of ₹10,000 which will rise upto ₹8 lakh by semester six. PU officials however noted that they will ask for clarity regarding where this money will come from and what the students will do about this. An official present for the Punjab government meeting said that former Delhi minister Manish Sisodia was also present here and had given examples of how Delhi government had tried to start this in schools, encouraging school children to start their own businesses and the innovations that the children came up with. They said that this Delhi model will now be tried on a university level in Punjab. However more clarity is needed regarding the financial aspect of this course. V-C Renu Vig said that they have received the mail and will go through it. 'It might be difficult to implement it now as it is already too late and the new session is about to start. I have asked the board of studies to see what can be done,' she added. Meanwhile, she said that PU already offers courses on entrepreneurship as electives and skill enhancement courses.

PU to draft rollout plan for ‘entrepreneurship curriculum' across 200+ Punjab colleges

Chandigarh: From defining their niche to earning up to Rs 8 lakh by the final semester, students in over 200 Panjab University-affiliated colleges in Punjab may soon be learning entrepreneurship not just in theory but by actually making money. With the Punjab government mandating a credit-based 'Entrepreneurship Mindset' curriculum from the 2025–26 academic session, PU is now working on the academic roadmap to roll it out across more than 200 colleges in the state, starting with arts and commerce courses. The university's Board of Studies will anchor the exercise, starting with undergraduate programmes in arts and commerce- BBA, BTech, BVoc and BCom. PU vice-chancellor Prof Renu Vig said the university was committed to executing the reform in a way that meaningfully engages students and faculty. "We support this progressive step by the Punjab Government. Our Board of Studies will evolve a structured plan to integrate the curriculum within the academic framework of our colleges. This shift will help students gain confidence, adaptability and enterprise skills for the real world," she said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The reform stems from a formal notification issued by the Punjab higher education department on May 22, which constituted the working group on higher education reforms for an entrepreneurial Punjab. The group was tasked with designing a credit-based curriculum suitable for multidisciplinary adoption, proposing integration strategies into existing degree programmes, recommending tech-based mentorship platforms, including AI-enabled tools and fostering institutional partnerships for venture support. The working group is chaired by Dr Karamjit Singh, vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), Amritsar. Other members include top officials and academic leaders such as Dr. Susheel Mittal (VC, IKGPTU), Dr. Dharamjit Singh (VC, Sant Baba Bhag Singh University), Dr. Rameshwar Singh (VC, Guru Kashi University), Pratham Mittal (CEO, Masters' Union), and senior IAS officers from the Higher and Technical Education departments. Startup Punjab CEO Surabhi Malik and Punjab Development Commission member Anurag Kundu are also part of the group. The curriculum recommended by the group is designed to break away from rote-based learning and instead foster skills in problem-solving, leadership, communication, financial literacy and resilience. The government document highlights a student-centred approach using storytelling by real entrepreneurs, team projects, field visits, and hands-on local challenges. It is not limited to business training but aims to instil an entrepreneurial outlook across disciplines. Importantly, the evaluation will not be limited to classroom learning. The official framework allocates 30% weightage to actual revenue and audience growth targets achieved, with the rest divided among weekly deliverables (40%), reflection journals (15%), and a final pitch presentation (15%). The programme encourages students to earn while they learn, focusing on content creation, freelancing, and other digital-first entrepreneurial models Panjab University officials said faculty capacity-building, content contextualisation, and flexible delivery formats will form part of the university's plan. Detailed deliberations and coordination with colleges will begin in the upcoming meetings of the Board of Studies. As part of the rollout, PU-affiliated colleges across Punjab, including those in smaller towns and rural belts, will implement the curriculum, potentially impacting thousands of undergraduate students. The initiative aligns with national education goals of skill development and multidisciplinary learning, while placing PU in a pivotal position in Punjab's higher education reforms.
