Tihar jail prisoner dies by suicide inside jail
A prisoner in Tihar Jail's hospital died by suicide by hanging himself from a window, informed the Tihar Jail officials in the early hours of Monday. Karmakar was under trial, while Saquib was convicted for his involvement in the 2002 and 2003 Mumbai blasts.(PTI File) The prisoner was an under-trial inmate, namely Ramesh Karmakar, who was lodged in Jail Number 4 but was undergoing treatment at the jail hospital in Jail Number 3 since May 28. Karmakar's body was found hanging from a window late on the night of Sunday, and the jail authorities were informed on the early morning of Monday. In another such case, an accused named Saquib Nachan in connection with the terror group Islamic State (ISIS), died in Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, informed sources said on Saturday. He has been in judicial custody in Tihar Jail since 2023 and was admitted to the hospital a few days ago, they said. Saquib was convicted for his involvement in the bomb blasts in Mumbai in 2002 and 2003. In line with the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Saquib Nachan, a habitual offender in many previous terror cases, was also a self-styled Amir-e-Hind for ISIS in India. Earlier in June 2024, the National Investigative Agency (NIA) had chargesheeted Nachan along with 16 hardcore agents of a proscribed global terrorist network, in a conspiracy involving the recruitment and radicalisation of youth and the fabrication of improvised explosive devices in the Delhi-Padgha ISIS terror module case. The accused were chargesheeted under various sections of IPC, UA(P) Act, Arms Act and Explosive Substances ACt, were found to have been engaged in a massive ISISI conspirancy involving recruitment, training and propagation of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ideology among gullible youth, along with fabrication of explosives and IEDs are fund-raising for the banned outfit. Its investigation had subsequently led to the seizure of several incriminating documents and data relating to the manufacturing of explosives and the fabrication of IEDs, along with propaganda magazines like 'Voice of Hindi', 'Rumiyah', 'Khhiafat', 'Dabiq', published by IS.

Jobless after Supreme Court verdict, Bengal teacher dies amid protests
A sacked school teacher in West Bengal, affected by the fallout of the SSC recruitment scam, has died of a stroke, triggering fresh outrage among the protesters. Prabir Karmakar, 34, a former English teacher, was among those who lost his job after the Supreme Court annulled 25,753 school appointments made through the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) in who used to teach at Amuipara Udbastu Vidyapith in Murshidabad, passed away late Wednesday night at his residence in Raghunathganj. Protesters said Karmakar was battling kidney-related issues and was in severe mental distress after losing his job. They claimed the anxiety surrounding his medical treatment and uncertain future led to his protesting teachers alleged that they have been completely ignored by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, despite weeks of demonstrations. Man held after allegedly throwing acid on wife in broad daylight in Ghaziabad
A 42-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly throwing acid on his wife at the Shastri Nagar roundabout on Saturday afternoon, the police said. The woman, who is around 40 years old, sustained severe burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Police said they were alerted to the incident at approximately 12:20pm via the emergency helpline number 112. A team from Kavi Nagar police station was dispatched immediately to the scene. According to investigators, the woman had been walking along the roadside when a man approached her on a bicycle and threw acid on her. 'The woman has 40 per cent burn injuries,' said a senior police officer. She was initially rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital before being referred to Safdarjung due to the severity of her condition. The attacker, identified as Vishwajeet Karmakar, was apprehended at the scene by the public. He was reportedly beaten by bystanders before being handed over to the police. Karmakar, a jeweller and resident of Mahendra Enclave, was subsequently taken into custody. 'The man was angry after his wife returned home following a period of absence and that is why he threw acid,' said Swatantra Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kavi Nagar. Police said the couple had been married for over 16 years and have two children, a 15-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl. According to officials, the couple had been facing marital discord for several months. The woman had left Karmakar and moved to Chandigarh with their daughter. 'He feared that people would laugh at him and that he couldn't control his wife,' said the officer. The woman is not yet in a condition to record her statement. A case has been registered suo motu under Section 124 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to voluntarily causing grievous hurt using acid or similar substances.
