Rahul Gandhi to sponsor education of 22 children orphaned during Operation Sindoor, says Congress

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will sponsor the education of 22 children who lost either both their parents or the family's primary earning member due to Pakistani shelling along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch, reported PTI on Tuesday. The party's Jammu and Kashmir unit chief, Tariq Hamid Karra, told reporters on Monday that the first instalment of the financial aid will be released on Wednesday, according to The Indian Express. 'The assistance will continue till these children graduate,' added Karra. Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad had escalated on May 7 when the Indian military carried out strikes – codenamed Operation Sindoor – on what it claimed were terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes were in response to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, which killed 26 persons on April 22. The Pakistan Army retaliated to Indian strikes by repeatedly shelling Indian villages along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. At least 22 Indian civilians and seven defence personnel were killed. The highest number of casualties was reported from the Jammu region of the Union Territory. Fifteen persons died in Poonch district, which came under heavy artillery firing from the Pakistan Army. On May 10, India and Pakistan reached an 'understanding' to halt firing following a four-day conflict. Gandhi had visited Poonch on May 24. According to Karra, the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha had directed party leaders in the region to compile a list of children who were orphaned during Operation Sindoor, reported PTI. 'The list was also cross-checked with the administration,' Congress chief spokesperson in Jammu and Kashmir, Ravindra Sharma, was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express.

Rahul Gandhi To Help Educate 22 Children Who Lost Parents In Pak Shelling During Op Sindoor

Rajouri/Jammu: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will sponsor the education of 22 children who lost either one or both parents in the Pakistani shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Sindoor, a party leader has said. Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra also refuted any differences with the pre-poll alliance partner National Conference (NC) but said his party is waiting for formation of coordination committee with the ruling party for the past nine months. "A lot of civilian casualties and damage to properties took place in Poonch and Rajouri (between May 7 and 10) in Pakistani shelling. Rahul Gandhi visited Poonch in the aftermath of the devastating shelling and visited the bereaved families. He asked us to prepare a list of school-going children who lost one or both parents, especially the breadwinners, and accordingly we submitted the list to him," Mr Karra, who reached Rajouri on a three-day tour of the region, told reporters late Monday. He said the party has a list of 22 such children in the Poonch district alone, and more such children might be included at the end of the three-day visit. Poonch district alone accounted for 13 civilian deaths among 28 fatalities in the Pakistani shelling and drone attacks in Jammu and Kashmir after the Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border under Operation Sindoor in May in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 persons, mostly tourists, dead. Mr Karra said he is visiting Poonch on Tuesday to handover the financial aid sent by the leader of opposition for the affected children for their education. "This is an initiative aimed at extending a helping hand to the children so that their studies are not impacted," he said.

March for statehood: J&K Congress president among others detained, later released

Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hamid Karra among many, including sitting legislators and senior party leaders, was detained on Sunday by police during their march demanding restoration of statehood to J&K. The march was organised under the banner 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq' which was foiled by police for the second time in the past two days. On Saturday, a Congress march to Raj Bhawan in Kashmir was stopped by police in Srinagar town. In Jammu, Congress workers led by Karra and other senior leaders took out the march to submit a memorandum at Raj Bhawan on Sunday. However, they were first stopped near their party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk. After a brief exchange of words and minor scuffle with police, they continued their march, only to be intercepted again on the Residency Road. They were detained and taken to district police lines in buses, but were released after some time. Criticising the authorities, Karra said that their action shows their frustration and their mentality that they do not believe in a democratic system and have no respect for people's voice. He said that the workers were not on the roads to spread unrest, but to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Lieutenant Governor championing people's demand for statehood. Pointing out that the Congress will not be cowed down, Karra said the party will go ahead with its 'Delhi challo' programme on Monday to 'ghareo' Parliament on the Monsoon Session's first day. The INDIA bloc MPs support the demand for Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, he said.
