March for statehood: J&K Congress president among others detained, later released
The march was organised under the banner 'Hamari Riyasat Hamara Haq' which was foiled by police for the second time in the past two days.
On Saturday, a Congress march to Raj Bhawan in Kashmir was stopped by police in Srinagar town.
In Jammu, Congress workers led by Karra and other senior leaders took out the march to submit a memorandum at Raj Bhawan on Sunday. However, they were first stopped near their party headquarters at Shaheedi Chowk.
After a brief exchange of words and minor scuffle with police, they continued their march, only to be intercepted again on the Residency Road. They were detained and taken to district police lines in buses, but were released after some time.
Criticising the authorities, Karra said that their action shows their frustration and their mentality that they do not believe in a democratic system and have no respect for people's voice.
He said that the workers were not on the roads to spread unrest, but to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Lieutenant Governor championing people's demand for statehood.
Pointing out that the Congress will not be cowed down, Karra said the party will go ahead with its 'Delhi challo' programme on Monday to 'ghareo' Parliament on the Monsoon Session's first day.
The INDIA bloc MPs support the demand for Jammu and Kashmir's statehood, he said.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of SC hearing on special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls, opposition INDIA bloc on Sunday alleged it is an "exercise of exclusion", questioning data released by Election Commission after SIR's first phase that 66 lakh people might be excluded on grounds such as "deceased, permanently shifted or untraceable. "Recent pressers of EC and refusal to accept Aadhaar, EPIC, and ration card as valid documents clearly point towards the fact that the entire SIR process is a citizenship verification process," he alleged. EC responded by asking why opposition parties are trying to create "an impression that the draft list is the final list, which it is not, as per SIR order. " It said it is not able to understand the big fuss now, when a full one month period from Aug 1-Sept 1 is available to point out wrongful inclusion or wrongful exclusion of any name. "Why don't the parties ask their not 1.6 lakh booth level agents to submit claims and objections from Aug 1-Sept 1 ?" it asked. Gearing up to step up the protests both inside and outside Parliament, Congress, RJD, CPM and CPI (ML)-Liberation leaders at a presser expressed fear that many more people will be excluded from rolls during the verification process ahead due to lack of documents like birth, caste and domicile certificates. RJD MP Manoj Jha said the whole SIR process is based on presumptions. "Clearly, opacity has become the hallmark of EC functioning," Jha said. "There is no time or option for the right to appeal for people who will be excluded in the whole process. There are also numerous reports of people found alive who are included in the dead list," he alleged. On the number of deceased, CPI (ML)-Liberation Dipankar Bhattacharya said, "Does this mean that in just six months, around 22 lakh people have passed away? So, does this mean the EC's January 2025 summary revision was a flop?"

Muslim hawker assaulted in Meerut; attempt to create fear, says opposition
After a Muslim cloth peddler was brutally assaulted at Fatehpur Narayan village, under Kithor police station limits, in Meerut district, opposition parties alleged on Sunday that the incident was a targeted attack designed to create fear. While villagers and police claimed Arif was mistaken for a thief, the victim's wife alleged that they were being forced to modify the complaint by the police. 'We have submitted a petition; the case is yet to be registered. My husband, who was selling clothes, was beaten, and now we are being pressured to change the petition by the Sub-Inspector,' said Tausima, the victim's wife, in a viral video. The Hindu reached out to the Meerut police, including the Circle Officer, but failed to get any response. Mob attack The incident happened on July 26. The victim, along with one companion, was selling clothes in the village when 10-15 people gathered and began calling him a thief, demanded his Aadhar card, and proceeded to beat him up. He was taken to Meerut Medical College for treatment. 'This incident shows that there is a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. No one has the right to take the law into their hands; some people emboldened by the dispensation are attempting to create a Jangal Raj kind of situation in U.P.; it is a lynching attempt that aims to create fear,' said Imran Masood, Lok Sabha MP and a senior Congress leader. Lok Sabha MP from Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari, said, 'I condemn this incident, it is clear that the accused have no fear of the administration and rule of law. They know no proper action will be taken, and this encourages them to attack poor Muslims.'

Abhishek to head to Delhi as TMC intensifies SIR stir
Kolkata: national general secretary is expected to reach Delhi this week as the party intensifies its stir in Parliament, demanding an assurance from the Centre "on the floor of the House" that the special intensive revision (SIR) in Bihar will be discussed. The party has said SIR requirements mirror Section 3 of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which makes the exercise "NRC in disguise." Over the last week, the party has been hamstrung by the absence of its floor leaders in Lok Sabha. Trinamool's leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopadhyay and senior MP Saugata Roy are not in Delhi due to health reasons. The party's chief whip in Lok Sabha, Kalyan Banerjee, is representing Bengal govt in cases and shuttling between Supreme Court and Calcutta High Court. On Friday, the party's deputy Lok Sabha leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar attended the all-party meeting convened by Speaker Om Birla. Banerjee is likely to remain in Delhi and work on party strategy. The Diamond Harbour MP, who was part of Centre's outreach abroad after Pahalgam attack, is also likely to be a keynote speaker if Operation Sindoor discussions take place in Parliament. A senior MP said: "Trinamool is not opposed to discussions on Operation Sindoor. In fact, we want some answers. But this cannot be at the expense of SIR. Here we are talking of mass disenfranchisement of people who had voted in the 2024 Lok Sabha, based on arbitrary reasoning. We want a clear assurance from the Centre on the floor of the house that SIR will be discussed threadbare in Parliament."
