Bengaluru celebrates Bandi Devara fest with gusto

Bengaluru: The city witnessed vibrant celebrations during the historic Bengaluru Bandi Devara Utsava, held as part of the birth anniversary of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, founder of Bengaluru. The three-day festival, marked by traditional fervour and large public participation, brought a slice of rural heritage into the urban heart of the city. On the second day, a grand procession of over 20 elaborately decorated bullock carts — representing the farming communities of Bengaluru and its surrounding areas — wound its way through iconic city routes, including Hudson Circle, Cubbon Park, the High Court, and Gopal Gowda Circle, before concluding at the Kempegowda statue near Vidhana Soudha. Each cart carried idols of Kempegowda's ancestors, Kempannaswamy and Sri Veeranna Swamy, which were ritually worshipped before the march. Nearly 2,000 people joined the procession, showcasing the region's cultural pride. The festivities began with floral tributes at the Kempegowda statue within the BBMP premises, led by Paramapoojya Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji of the Adichunchanagiri Mahasansthana Mutt, who also inaugurated the day's celebrations. Addressing the gathering, Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji observed, 'This festival was once confined to villages. Seeing it revived and embraced in the city is deeply satisfying. Let us uphold and grow this tradition in the years to come.' Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who participated in the celebrations, commended the farming community for their spirited involvement. 'It is a matter of pride that Bengaluru, a city founded by Kempegowda, is preserving its cultural roots. The government has earmarked ₹100 crore for the construction of Kempegowda Bhavana, and plans are underway to open libraries in his name,' he announced. The event concluded with the distribution of sweets to attendees. Prominent attendees included Mahalakshmipuram MLA Gopalaiah, senior IRS officer and Utsava Committee Honorary President Jayaram Rayapur, Committee President Talakadu Chikkarangegowda, Secretary M. Amaresh, Vice President Nagaraj (Retd. SP), and several cultural and academic figures including Dr. B.S. Puttaswamy, Divya Rangenahalli, Prof. Jayaprakash Gowda, and members of the First Circle Organisation.

Kempegowda led a life of Vishwamanava: DKS

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has lauded Bengaluru's founder Kempegowda as a 'Vishwamanava'. Speaking at an event organised to celebrate the 516th birth anniversary of Kempegowda, he said, 'Kempegowda was born a Vokkaliga but he lived a life of a 'Vishwamanava'. He has left an indelible mark on our society.' He also laid the foundation stone for Kempegowda Bhavana and awarded Kempegowda awards. 'Bengaluru is making waves around the world, but we should not forget that Kempegowda was the one who laid the foundation for the modern Bengaluru. He spread the message of secularism by giving opportunities to all sections of the society.' 'I would like to send out a message to our community. Nobody seeks to be born in a particular community. Dharma must be part of politics, but politics has no place in dharma. Kempegowda belongs to all communities, he is an asset of the society.' 'Managing Benglauru is not an easy task. I have been trying to give the city a new shape keeping in mind the scale and size of the city. Tunnel road and elevated roads are getting ready. Projects worth over Rs one lakh are being planned for Bengaluru.' 'We are planning a new 60,000-seater stadium. A land parcel of 50 acres has been identified for the purpose. We are also fighting the garbage mafia. Our government is trying to do whatever it takes to develop the city,' he said. 'We should not forget three Ks- Kempegowda the founder of Bengaluru, Kengel Hanumanthaiah who built the Vidhana Soudha and SM Krishna who built the Vikasa Soudha,' he said. 'We got the approval of the Cabinet for five-acre land for Kempegowda Bhavana in just one week. We have allocated Rs 100 crore for the Kempegowda Bhavana, a few architects have submitted the design concepts. This will be brought to the attention of Sri Nirmalananda Swamiji,' he noted. 'When I was the Energy minister, we worked out the modalities for celebrating Kempegowda jayanthi. Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji cleared the air about the exact date of Kempegowda's birthday. This effort was the prelude to these celebrations today. I would like Kempegowda Jayanthi to be celebrated across the state,' he added.

There is no internal dispute in party: CM

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday dismissed remarks made by Minister KN Rajanna suggesting possible political changes in the state, saying it is better to ignore such statements. He clarified that Rajanna only mentioned there may be developments, not that anything specific would happen. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Siddaramaiah said, 'There is no internal dispute in the party. Minister KN Rajanna has said that there may be developments in state politics. He said that he did not say that something like this would happen. It would be better to ignore his statement.' On the 516th birth anniversary of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar garland the statue of Kempegowda. The Chief Minister called him a visionary and the founder of modern Bengaluru. Speaking after garlanding Kempegowda's statue located on the eastern side of Vidhana Soudha, the Chief Minister said, 'Kempegowda was an efficient and far-sighted administrator. The global recognition that Bengaluru enjoys today is because it laid its foundation. 'The birth anniversary is being celebrated jointly by the state government, the Kempegowda Development Authority, and the BBMP. Siddaramaiah noted that during his previous term as Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018, his government had identified the exact date of Kempegowda's birth in consultation with Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji, following which the state has been observing Kempegowda Jayanti annually. 'Kempegowda's 516th birth anniversary is being celebrated in collaboration with the government, Kempegowda Development Authority and BBMP. During 2013-18, our government discussed with Nirmala Nanda Swamiji and found out the date of birth, and since then, the government has been continuously celebrating Kempegowda Jayanti. If Bangalore is recognised internationally today, it was Kempegowda who laid the foundation for it,' he said. He added that the state government had taken significant steps to honour his legacy, and that Kempegowda's contributions remain a guiding example for governance and urban planning. 'The government has done the work of commemorating him. Kempegowda, who built towers in four parts of Bangalore, understood what Bangalore should be like and built many towns, including Nagaratpet, Chikkapet, and Balepet, during his administration based on his profession,' he added.
