Browns coach Kevin Stefanski wants a decision 'sooner than later' as rookies Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders compete with vets at QB
Perhaps the most anticipated NFL position battle of the summer began in earnest on Wednesday as Cleveland Browns quarterbacks took the field for the first time at training camp. As of Wednesday, the competition remains a four-way race between rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders and veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. But head coach Kevin Stefanski would prefer that the competition not linger deep into training camp. "I think the big thing for me is putting our guys into position where we can evaluate them," Stefanski told reporters Wednesday. "I think they did a great job in the spring — all four of those guys. We'll continue to put them in some situations. "But ultimately, we'd like to make a decision sooner than later." Sooner than later would certainly be ideal for the Browns. But the decision — and its timeline — will be determined by the performances of the quarterbacks on the field. It remains a difficult race to gauge, and reps aren't necessarily the best indicator of where things stand. Not yet, at least. So who has the early leg up? In an interview with Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein, general manager Andrew Berry explained Cleveland's philosophy on quarterback reps as it pertained to June practice in minicamp. At that point, 17-season NFL veteran Joe Flacco was frequently seen on the sideline. 'Oftentimes, the thought in the NFL is like, 'OK, well, your starter gets 70% of the reps, your backup gets 25% of the reps and your third guy gets 5% of the reps, and the job of the backups is to be ready to play with no reps,' Berry told Yahoo Sports on June 11. 'It doesn't have to be that way — especially in the spring, when we have some flexibility because we're not necessarily preparing for games.' That said, somebody has to go first, and we got an early look at the practice rotations on Wednesday. How the Browns QB practice rotation looks early With four quarterbacks involved, the Browns are breaking up their training camp reps into two segments on two different fields for seven-on-seven drills. The rookies — Gabriel and Sanders — will practice on one field, and the veterans — Flacco and Pickett — will practice on another. It's a system that mirrors their spring practices. Per ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi, Flacco got the first set of reps over Pickett on the veteran Field. Gabriel — who was selected two rounds ahead of Sanders in April's NFL Draft — got the first set of reps on the rookie field. When it came time for individual drills, the rotation went: Pickett, Flacco, Gabriel, Sanders. So take that as you will. As Berry alluded to in June, it's probably best to not read too much into the rotations and the reps this early in the process. But the competition is officially underway. And NFL eyes will be be watching closely.

Yes, the Browns' new all-brown uniforms are just as gross as you think
Despite having one of the trickiest color palettes in all of professional sports, the Cleveland Browns have almost always managed to look better than they play on the field. But in 2025 -- a season where Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are competing for the starting quarterback role -- the franchise has opted to lean in to the groan. For the last 70-plus years, Cleveland has utilized brown, orange and white in simple, clean contrast to give the NFL one of its sharpest, most recognizable looks (2015-2020 Browns uniforms not included). The last two seasons, that's included an alternate white helmet that, while not the team's best option, still worked. This winter, however, they've opted to reflect the probable mess on the field with, uh, lots of earthen colors. That's the only logic behind a uniform reveal, sponsored by Dude Wipes (naturally), of an all-brown alternate uniform that effectively takes the balance and contrast of the team's use of white and throws it out the window. Well maybe it looks better in motion? Hmmm, nope. But if that unveiling video is accurate and my knowledge of the 1999 Kevin Smith classic film Dogma is correct, that suggests Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward and Jerry Jeudy are all Golgothans (the video in that link is NSFW, because it comes from a 1999 Kevin Smith classic). In fairness, this would explain a lot behind Garrett's general demonic presence. Anyway! These uniforms, PRESENTED BY DUDE WIPES, stink. Especially when the Browns could go out looking like this: Look at that. Zero wipes needed. Browns Could Play Role of 'Spoiler' in Best- and Worst-Case Scenarios for 2025
Browns Could Play Role of 'Spoiler' in Best- and Worst-Case Scenarios for 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns took a step backward in 2024 after a playoff appearance in 2023 behind super-sub quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco returns to the fold for 2025, but he's not been given the keys to the offense yet, and could find himself on the bench to start the season if fellow veteran Kenny Pickett or one of the draft picks in Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders impresses in training camp and preseason. While the defense is clearly the most talented unit on the team, 2025 could ride on the performance of the offense, and particularly, the quarterback position. Pro Football Network predicted each team's best- and worst-case scenarios ahead of the 2025 season, and at the very worst, the Browns could play spoiler. BEST-CASE SCENARIO 6-11 "Things don't look all that peachy for the Cleveland Browns heading into 2025. They don't know who their quarterback is going to be, and they don't have much proven offensive firepower outside of Jerry Jeudy at wide receiver. That makes it difficult to project them as a playoff contender," PFSN wrote. "That said, the Browns could still turn some heads and build momentum going into 2026. They have a talented defense with a great coordinator in Jim Schwartz, and the unit got better by drafting Mason Graham and Carson Schwesinger. "If one of the quarterbacks starts making some noise, Cleveland could play spoiler for some teams down the stretch." WORST-CASE SCENARIO 1-16 "The four-man quarterback competition should be an indication enough that 2025 figures to be a rough season for the Cleveland Browns," PFSN wrote. "None of all their options to replace the injured Deshaun Watson seem particularly inspiring as immediate answers at QB. While the Browns have some good players, their offensive firepower is severely lacking. "The defense took a slight step back in 2024, and unless that unit performs at an elite level this year, they'll likely find themselves in the basement of not just the AFC North but potentially the entire NFL." Browns QB Kenny Pickett predicted to enter training camp as QB1
The Cleveland Browns' quarterback battle is about to begin with the start of 2025 training camp on July 23rd. Rookies and veterans have officially reported to Berea, and to kick things off, Mary Kay Cabot of predicts that Kenny Pickett will have the upper hand early in camp. 'My guess is that Kenny Pickett still has a slight edge in terms of being No. 1 on the depth chart heading into training camp, but that could quickly change,' Mary Kay said in the latest edition of 'Hey Mary Kay!' She also broke down the unique circumstances surrounding the Browns' quarterback situation. With four quarterbacks competing for playing time this season, it's shaping up to be a different kind of training camp for the team: 'It might not be easy to determine where the QBs fall on the imaginary depth chart in the first two weeks of camp, because the Browns will continue two-spotting—or splitting—the four QBs on two different fields to maximize their reps,' Many fans will argue and speculate about Joe Flacco not getting starting quarterback reps in camp, but his experience in the NFL and with the team speaks louder than practice reps. Head coach Kevin Stefanski and the organization know what Flacco can provide if they choose to start him at the beginning of the regular season. There's no question that the quarterback room will be a major storyline throughout training camp. While it's unlikely that rookies Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel will start in Week 1, they'll still have plenty of opportunities behind their veteran competition on the roster.
