Subaru Launches Its Uncharted EV With a 290-Mile Range, Should Hyundai and Kia Worry?
Subaru has revealed its new Uncharted electric vehicle (EV) in person for the first time, and the compact SUV is bound to put some pressure on the electric variants of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro. The all-new Uncharted Sport and GT trims offer up to 338 horsepower, translating to a 0-60 mph time of less than 5 seconds, and an estimated 290-mile range. This horsepower stems from dual electric motors on the front and rear axles, and standard all-wheel drive (AWD) on two of the three variants. The Uncharted's complete trim lineup includes Premium FWD, Sport, and GT levels. Drivers receive over 300 miles of range on the front-wheel drive (FWD) trim, but lower horsepower at 221. Fast-charging each grade's 74.7-kWh, high-capacity lithium-ion battery from 0% to 80% takes about thirty minutes, and selectable drive modes include Snow, Mud, and Dirt. Off-roading is enhanced by the model's lightweight and rigid high-strength steel, structural support from its underfloor batteries, aerodynamic enhancements, and specifically tuned suspension components. While this compact model is almost seven inches shorter than Subaru's new Solterra electric SUV, it features 1.2 cubic feet of additional storage behind the second row for a total of 25 cubic feet. There's seating for up to five passengers, and design touches, such as orange accents and soft-touch materials, characterize the cabin. Subaru StarTex interior upholstery is available on the Uncharted GT and Sport, and the GT trim also receives standard heated outboard rear seats. On the technology front, drivers receive a 14-inch touchscreen, dual wireless smartphone chargers, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Dual USB-C chargers are present in the rear, and a battery preconditioning system helps achieve the 30-minute charge time from 0% to 80%, even under challenging conditions such as cold weather. The digital gauge cluster is positioned above the dashboard, which contains a sleek LED ambient lighting strip. A panoramic glass roof paired with two-tone coloring helps form the Uncharted's contemporary appearance, and trims like the GT feature ventilated front seats and 20-inch wheels. The other wheel option measures 18 inches, and AWD models contain low-profile roof rails. The Subaru Uncharted beats both the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV in both power and range. The 2026 Hyundai Kona Electric boasts between 133 and 215 horsepower, while the Kia Niro EV offers 201 horsepower. The Kona Electric can take drivers between 200 and 260 miles on a single charge, versus the Niro EV's 253-mile range. The Uncharted is also more off-road focused than its Hyundai and Kia counterparts, and features more cargo space behind its second row than the Niro, while falling short of the Kona Electric by just 0.5 cubic feet. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted will give the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV a run for their money with its sharp exterior styling, impressive range, off-road capability, and interior that doesn't cut corners on tech. During the global in-person reveal of the Uncharted in New York, I noticed several standout elements that distinguished this Subaru from its competition, including rear door handles on the C-pillar, a striking headlight signature, and an interior that felt clean and straightforward, yet not dull. The 2026 Subaru Uncharted is expected to go on sale in early 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to its release. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

'I've only had an EV for a month but biggest downsides were clear straight away'
Driving instructor Chloe has candidly shared her experience of electric vehicle (EV) ownership after just 30 days behind the wheel — including two pretty major downfalls A driving instructor has laid bare the reality of owning an electric vehicle (EV) just one month on from making the switch. While TikToker Chloe, who goes by the handle @drivewithchloe, lists many merits to driving the Kia Niro EV, two major pitfalls became painfully apparent to her in no time. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) approved driving instructor from West Yorkshire shared her 'personal pros and cons' online - and revealed exactly how much she is saving after ditching her petrol car. The first thing Chloe noticed was the sound — or rather, lack of it. "So my first one is a pro and a con, and that's the sound," she said. "I love how silent it is, it's really relaxing, you don't get that sort of dull noise in the background from the engine or any of that." But this peace and quiet comes with a bit of a downside: "People do not look before they cross the street," Chloe explained. "They rely on their ears, and they step out in front of this thing multiple times a day." Chloe found the cost savings, which she expects to go up, to be undeniable, having 'saved over £100' in her fuel bill during the first month of EV ownership, even though she was public charging. She added: "When I'm privately charging at home, that's gonna shoot up even more." Even with the premium often associated with public chargers, EV drivers typically spend far less on energy than on those with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles that run on petrol or diesel, with home charging slashing costs even further. Chloe was also impressed by the technology in her EV, hailing: "I can preprogram the climate and say what time I want it to be at what temperature for the next day. "Before I even set foot outside the house it's cooled down in the car." However, she also notes: "The downside to this — battery range. As soon as you use that, the range is going down." Another downside in her daily routine also became apparent — charging time. Chloe says: "A con is my charge time, because I'm still public charging. I'm waiting for my home installation, so once that arrives it'll be a great pro, because I can plug it in overnight and go to bed. But at the moment I'm parking up for 20 minutes a night." Public charging, while increasingly accessible, can be a hassle — especially when compared with the convenience of home charging. Depending on the charger, topping up an EV in public can take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours. Until her home charger is installed, Chloe's nightly detour is a reminder that using the UK's public charging infrastructure, while growing, isn't always as easy as filling up with petrol. So for Chloe, the biggest downsides were clear straight away — charging logistics and range anxiety, particularly when using the EV's impressive climate control tech. But despite this, in the caption for her video Chloe adds: "I have no regrets about my car choice, I think some people thought my last video was me complaining, that's not the case at all! Just spelling out how it is in my eyes for anyone considering going EV… It's perfect for me but it's not for everyone and that's okay!" So while EVs may not be for everybody, Chloe feels no remorse about her decision. Her warnings about range and charging are just intended to help her followers and viewers make an informed decision on the switchover to electric — one that is the best possible choice for them.

Car Deal of the Day: Get EV3-style for less with a Kia Niro EV for £238 per month
285 mile-range; easy to drive Just £237.50 a month Nearly £100 a month cheaper than EV3 The new EV3 may be the Kia that's (rightly) in the spotlight right now, but don't forget the other electric car that has helped Kia to become a leading EV maker – the Niro EV. It may not have the EV3's new factor, but the Niro EV is still an excellent electric family hatchback – especially if you're new to the world of EV motoring. Add in the fact that the Niro costs around £100 less a month on lease than its glitzier sister, and it's a winner in our book. Advertisement - Article continues below First Vehicle Leasing is offering the Niro EV for just £237.50 a month right now, after an initial payment of £3,200.04. This 36-month agreement has a 5,000-miles-a-year cap, but this can be revised up to 8,000 for an extra £17.16 a month. This deal gets you a Niro EV in 2 spec. It's the lowest of the two-trim line-up, with the higher being – you guessed it – 3. The range has recently been rationalised and you can thank the EV3's arrival for that, probably. Still, 2 gets you 17-inch alloys, a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, and a plethora of safety kit. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below The Niro also gets a 64.8kWh battery pack that's good for a claimed 285 miles. In our testing we've found 250 miles to be the most likely range you can get, which is still pretty good. The interior is well finished and has a design that's very similar to that of its EV6 big brother. It's roomy, too, with plenty of space for a couple of six-footers in the back, while the boot is huge at 475 litres. Fold down the back seats and this rises to nearly 1,400 litres, plus there are plenty of clever storage places such as a handy 'frunk' under the bonnet. The Best Used SUVs You Can Score for Under $30,000
You can't go more than a few seconds down the road without seeing one. SUVs have become commonplace on the roads today, with Hedges Company revealing they make up 12% of the total vehicles in the United States. However, if you're considering buying one, you might want to skip the new price tag in favor of a used, cheaper SUV. But which used SUVs stand out above all the rest? You'd be surprised at how many options you have if you're looking for one on somewhat of a budget. It's all about doing the necessary footwork before you sign the line on your new car. To bring you this list, we searched for the top-rated SUVs under $30,000 on various automotive websites like Autotrader, and Edmunds. We stuck with those with 75,000 miles or less and found several that hit the mark and can be found at dealerships. Best of all, these SUVs aren't ancient. Many are just a few years old, but the cost savings are astronomical. The Kia Telluride is designed with space in mind, with three rows of seating and ample cargo room. It was lauded as Edmunds' top-rated SUV for two years with an overall 4.1 rating by owners. Our search turned up a number of the 2020 and 2021 Tellurides for sale in the mid-$20,000s. Most had fewer than 50,000 miles on them, and some even had the original warranty in place. The Honda CR-V debuted in 1997, but has remained one of the consistent top sellers for the manufacturer. The 2022 model has an overall 4.5 rating and can be picked up for around $25,000, depending on your locale. It's well touted for its safety features and roominess, as well as the driver assist features included in all trims. This is probably one of the bigger SUVs on our list, but it has plenty of room, even if it only offers two rows of seating. Our search turned up several 2022 models in the $25,000 range, many with 50,000 or fewer miles. The NHTSA has ranked the two models available, the Front-Wheel Drive and All Wheel Drive, as five stars in terms of safety. If you're looking for something more compact but with enough room and off-road capabilities, the 2023 Mazda CX-50 is a good bet to find in dealerships for around $25,000 to $27,000. It has a combined 27 MPG, making it quite fuel-efficient for an SUV. It has an 8.1 overall rating with Edmunds, and a 4.1 customer satisfaction rating. If you want to take a walk on the electric side, the 2022 Kia Niro EV is one used SUV you can find for a decent price. We found several in the low $20,000 range with low mileage. In a road test, Edmunds found the Niro EV could do 285 miles on a full charge, making it an efficient option for zipping around town. It received an 8.3 overall rating from Edmunds and 4.2 from consumers. Chevrolet has a few different SUVs in its lineup, and the Trailblazer is one of the newest. While listed as a small SUV, it has plenty of room inside to fit five people comfortably, from personal experience. You can find them on sale for under $30,000 and sometimes, even under $20,000 with minimal miles, depending on the features and trim. Customers seem to really like the 2022 Trailblazer, as reviews give it a 4.1 overall satisfaction rating. Edmunds has rated it an 8. The 2022 Honda Passport is a midsize SUV that gives you more space for either people or cargo, with the spacious backseat holding three people comfortably. It's designed with fuel efficiency in mind, with 22 MPG combined, and has a powerful V6 engine. The Passport has been Edmunds tested with an 8.1 rating and 4.6 overall customer rating, meaning many owners have been happy with this SUV. Toyota has several SUVs ranging from small to large, and the 2021 Toyota Highlander falls in the middle. Yet, it can seat up to eight passengers, which is wild for a midsize SUV. The gas mileage isn't bad either, with a combined 23 MPG. Customers rate it a 4 out of 5 for reliability, while Edmunds rates the vehicle a solid 7.8. It might be weird to see a Tesla on here, but the 2022 Model Y is one SUV you can get for under $30,000, actually. This all-electric car might seem small on the outside, but it's quite spacious on the inside; it almost seems like your mind's playing tricks on you. Our search turned up several Model Ys in the mid-$20,000s, many with under 50,000 miles on them, so you can expect to get a lot of life out of them yet. Speaking of life, you can expect to drive close to 300 miles on a full charge. The Tesla Model Y comes with an enormous warranty of eight years or 120,000 miles for its powertrain. If you like the Passport, but want something even bigger, the 2022 Pilot comes with an extra row of seating for those rowdy sports teams or family road trips. It's designed with comfort in mind with reclining second-row seats and built-in support. The Pilot ranks slightly higher than the Passport, with Edmunds giving it an 8.2 rating. Plus, you can find various trims for sale in the $20,000 range. If you have $30,000 burning a hole in your pocket and you're in the market for an SUV, you'll find plenty of options at dealerships nationwide with SUVs to check out. Many are prior trade-ins, but if you pick certified pre-owned SUVs, you'll have some degree of protection, for at least a short period. Best of all, these listings tend to be young with fewer miles, so you'll feel better knowing they'll last for a bit.
