Oregon wildfires: Burdoin Fire destroys 45 structures, red flag issued in S. Oregon
The Burdoin Fire has destroyed at least 45 structures on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge and hundreds of residents remain on a level 3 "go now" evacuation order near Lyle, Wash., for a blaze that's burned 11,200 acres so far and remains 13% contained. While firelines held strong through high winds on July 24, the fire is expected to stay active for at least the next day or two, according to a July 25 morning report. In southern Oregon, the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for July 25 for the city of Klamath Falls and the Fremont-Winema National Forest. In more positive news, final updates have been issued for the Cram Fire that nearly became Oregon's first megafire of the season and the Board Shanty Fire south of Grants Pass. The Butte Creek Fire remains in steady condition. Here's the latest on wildfires burning across Oregon and in the Columbia River Gorge. Community meeting to be held for the Burdoin Fire A community meeting will be held for the Burdoin Fire at 6 p.m. on July 25 at The Dalles High School Auditorium, according to Klickitat County Emergency Dispatch. The meeting will cover updates regarding current operations, evacuation levels and disaster assistance support. The Burdoin Fire has completely destroyed at least 45 structures. The blaze that has burned 11,200 acres has reached 13% containment. According to a July 24 update, dangerous weather conditions with high temperatures and sustained winds are expected to last through July 25, with continued winds on July 26. This could exacerbate fire activity and potentially raise evacuation levels. The Sheriff's office is urging residents to remain alert and have an evacuation plan. The evacuations currently affect hundreds of people, and the entire town of Lyle remains on a Level 3 "go now" warning. Another small fire broke out in Klickitat County on July 23, called the Snyder Canyon Fire. The blaze is currently at 53 acres. Due to a swift response from local units, it has not increased in size since July 24. Numerous roads remain closed for the safety of the public and first responders. Red flag warning in southern Oregon A red flag warning has been issued for July 25 across a large area in Southern Oregon, according to the National Weather Service. This includes the Fremont-Winema National Forest near Crater Lake, down to Klamath Falls and east and south of the Rogue Valley, Scattered to widespread thunderstorm activity with abundant lightning is forecasted. High winds also factor into the warning. "Gusts around 40 to 60 mph are possible with any thunderstorms that develop," the alert said. The red flag warning will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. on July 25. View the hazard area in detail at Progress continues on the Butte Creek Fire The Butte Creek Fire burning on Warm Springs Reservation land remains at 30% containment, with limited growth since July 21. Per an update from CTWS Fire Management, weather conditions on July 24 pushed the fire into an area planned for burning and it is consuming the vegetation that could have otherwise threatened containment lines. As of the evening of July 24, the containment line was holding well. Final updates issued for Cram Fire and Board Shanty Fire The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office released what it expected to be its final daily update on the Cram Fire on July 24. The fire, now at 77% containment, and firefighting resources and excess equipment were being released from the incident to support other priorities. Firefighters continue to patrol and mop up to further secure containment lines. Evacuations remain in effect for some zones around the fire. The ODF's Southwest Oregon District also issued its final update for the Board Shanty Fire south of Grants Pass. Firefighters continue to make steady progress across the incident, extinguishing lingering coals and smoking debris. Containment has now increased to 45% on the 474-acre fire. Currently, 183 personnel are assigned to the Board Shanty Fire, continuing mop-up work and containment efforts. On Thursday evening, the Josephine County Sheriff's Office canceled all remaining Level 1 – Be Ready evacuation notices. SR 14, SR 142 closures snarls travel in Columbia River Gorge as Burdoin Fire burns nearby
SR 14 and SR 142 remain closed in Klickitat County due to the Burdoin Fire, which started Friday, July 18, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. As of Friday evening, SR 14 is closed in both directions between milepost 66 near Bingen and milepost 75.8 near the junction with SR 142. WSDOT described the closure as 'extended' and said there is currently no estimated time for reopening. SR 142 is also closed in both directions from milepost 1 near Klickitat County Park to milepost 4 near Knight Creek. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Eastbound traffic may detour via the Hood River Bridge. Westbound travelers are being directed to use either the US 97 Sam Hill Memorial Bridge or the US 197 Dalles Bridge. However, WSDOT warned that US 197 is closed to commercial vehicles and any vehicles over 10,000 gross vehicle weight (GVW) between milepost 0 near the Oregon State Line and milepost 3.1 near SR 14. Burdoin Mountain Fire in Columbia River Gorge prompts Level 3 ‘Go Now' evacuations
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A wildfire has erupted in the area near the Columbia River Gorge and prompted Level 3 'Go Now' evacuations, officials said. The Burdoin Mountain Fire is burning east of Bingen, Wash. near Milepost 68, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Subscribe Now The Burdoin Fire started just before 2:30 p.m. The fire is now estimated to be 2,000 acres and growing, the State Fire Marshal said on Friday evening. Initial reports earlier in the day said the fire was 250 acres. Officials say westbound Hwy 14 is closed at Milepost 68. A map of the evacuation areas can be seen below. The Level 3 evacuations are for those east of Bingen: South Highway 14 near milepost 68, north to Forbes, east to Courtney Rd. Level 2 'Be Set evacuations are for those south at Forbes Rd to north at Bates Rd, West at Tunnel Rd, east at end of Bristol Rd. Additionally, those south at Bates Rd to north at Billette Rd, west at Sandborn Rd. and east at Acne/Crystal Rd. are under Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuation levels. In addition, an evacuation shelter has been established at Columbia High School in White Salmon, officials said. The fire has also caused closures at SR 14. 'Both directions of SR 14 near Bingen are closed between milepost 66 and Courtney Road (milepost 70), in Klickitat County due to a brush fire. There is no estimated time for reopening,' officials said. 'You talk about the fires but to actually see it in real life, and to know our state is on fire is a scary thing,' said Heather Meier, who was visiting the area when the fire broke out. Meier said she and her family had to return to their home in Kent, Washington, via taking detours through Oregon's I-84. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Burdoin Fire evacuations expand east, Lyle at Level 3 ‘Go Now'
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – After a wildfire erupted, prompting Level 3 'Go Now' evacuations in the area near the Columbia River Gorge, officials say those evacuations have expanded, now including the town of Lyle. The Burdoin Mountain Fire is burning east of Bingen, Wash. near Milepost 68, according to the U.S. Forest Service. It is located in Klickitat County near the city of White Salmon, the Washington State Fire Marshal's Office said. Cram Fire approaches megafire status, crosses 90K acres The fire started just before 2:30 p.m. Friday. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, the fire is now estimated to be 6500 acres and growing. As of Saturday morning, the fire is 0% contained, it has damaged 5 residences, destroyed 3 and is threatening 20, according to the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center. Given this, evacuation notices were expanded to the north and east on Saturday. A map of the evacuation areas can be seen below. In addition, a evacuation shelters have been established at Columbia High School in White Salmon, as well as the Dalles Middle School, officials said. The fire has also caused closures at SR 14, from the east end of Bingen to Lyle (mileposts 66-76). Further, Highway 142 is now closed from Hwy 14 to milepost 4 and Centerville Highway is also closed from Hwy 14 to milepost 5. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. JBLM resident accused of vehicular assault after passenger hurt in wreck, WSP says
A 26-year-old Joint Base Lewis-McChord resident, suspected of driving under the influence, is facing a vehicular assault charge after crashing a car and injuring a passenger, according to the Washington State Patrol. Just before 3 a.m. Friday, the man was headed west on state Route 142 at Olsen Road in Klickitat County, which is in the southeast area of the state along the Columbia River. Goldendale is the county seat. Troopers say the driver crossed Olsen Road, drove through a fence and crashed into a tree. Both driver and passenger, a 54-year-old man from Goldendale, were hurt and taken to Klickitat Valley Health in Goldendale, according to State Patrol.
