Maratha youths gherao minister Sarnaik over Kunbi certificate delay
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Tension gripped the district rest house in Dharashiv on Friday after angry Maratha youths gheraoed Maharashtra's transport minister and Dharashiv district's guardian minister, Pratap Sarnaik, demanding an immediate resolution of issues related to the issuance of Kunbi caste and validity certificates. These certificates pave the way for the Maratha community youths to be recognised as OBCs. The youths, agitated over what they called deliberate delays despite submitting valid documentary evidence, blocked Sarnaik's path outside the rest house, insisting he address their concerns before proceeding. For nearly 10-15 minutes, the protesters stood firm, forcing the minister, who was accompanied by district collector Keerthi Kiran Pujar, to engage in a heated exchange. The youths alleged even after Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil's successful movement, which led to a policy decision allowing eligible Marathas to be issued Kunbi certificates based on documentary proof, the caste validity committees continued to refuse issuing certificates. While Kunbi certificates are being issued to some applicants, the activists said the caste validity certificates — required for availing reservation benefits — were being withheld by the social justice department, led by minister Sanjay Shirsat. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo This delay, they claimed, caused students to miss out on educational opportunities and other welfare schemes. Sarnaik, in the presence of the protestors, dialled a call to an official from the caste validity committee and said, "You were given instructions twice earlier, yet nothing has moved. If you are in charge and still not acting as per rules, then you are responsible for the trouble faced by both govt and public." Taking strong note of the grievances, Sarnaik ordered the immediate issuance of validity certificates to eligible applicants who furnished the necessary documents. "Act immediately and ensure due process is followed," he told the officer. Following the confrontation, Sarnaik was seen discussing the issue with the district collector and directing him to ensure appropriate steps are taken for the issuance of caste certificates to the Maratha community youths.

HC calls out sarpanch for fake caste certificate, imposes ₹5 lakh penalty
Jun 24, 2025 08:28 AM IST MUMBAI: The Bombay high court imposed a ₹ 5 lakh penalty on Ashish Savant, sarpanch of a Nandgaon village in Raigad, for having a fraudulent caste certificate, which came to light after a complaint filed against him during the gram panchayat elections in 2024. The court said that using a fraudulent caste certificate was a constitutional fraud. The court said that such actions went against the purpose of affirmative action and dismissed Sawant's plea and asked him to pay ₹ 5 lakh (Shutterstock) Savant's opponent in the election, Jalindar Khaire, had filed a complaint with the Raigad District Caste Scrutiny Committee questioning Savant's Kunbi caste status after losing the election to him. The scrutiny committee, after a detailed inquiry, passed an order calling his caste certificate fraudulent and invalidating his caste claim. Savant then approached the high court claiming he hadn't been heard and his documents hadn't been properly checked. Advocate Ramesh Dube Patil, representing the scrutiny committee, said that Sawant had used a fake school leaving certificate issued in the name of his father in June 1982, to claim that he belonged to the Kunbi caste, a sub-caste in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category . However, a report from the headmaster of the Raigad Zilla Parishad School in Vithalwadi, confirmed by the police vigilance cell, said the certificate was not issued by them, and Sawant's father did not appear in their records. Patil added that Sawant had tried to hide an admission register and a report by the Raigad Zilla Parishad School in Nandgaon in November 2023 which recorded Sawant's caste as a Hindu Maratha. Patil added that Sawant had three opportunities to be heard but failed to appear before the scrutiny committee. A division bench of justices Ajey Gadkari and Kamal Khata said that Sawant had attempted to take undue advantage of a caste certificate obtained through fraudulent means. They said that such actions went against the purpose of affirmative action and dismissed Sawant's plea and asked him to pay ₹ 5 lakh.

Gear up for Aug 29 march to Mumbai, Jarange to supporters
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange has called upon his supporters to prepare for the planned Mumbai march on Aug 29, advocating for Maratha quota rights. On Sunday, Jarange conducted a gathering with supporters from 123 villages located along the Godavari river in Jalna's Ankush Nagar. During the meeting, Jarange described the Maratha reservation as "amrut", urging the community to secure it without fail. "The reservation is not a favour by anybody. It is our just right. Don't remain silent, don't be careless," he said. During his speech, Jarange criticised chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. "Fadnavis is responsible for the Marathas not getting caste validity documents for Kunbi certificates. He has asked authorities to deliberately find flaws in our certificates," he said. Jarange revealed that senior govt officials told him about the CM's alleged involvement in instigating conflicts between the Maratha and OBC communities. Addressing the appointment of NCP politician Chhagan Bhujbal as cabinet minister, Jarange said Fadnavis was utilising Bhujbal to create discord between Marathas and OBCs.
