Protest demanding arrest of suspended Sub Registrar held

Representatives of several social organisations led by Independent legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy on Monday organised a sit-in protest inside the office of Registration Department at Saram demanding stern action against officials involved in misdeeds. They wanted suspended Sub-Registrar R. Sriganth to be arrested and prosecuted under Prevention of Corruption Act. The representatives criticised the government for not initiating criminal proceedings against the official despite a video of him allegedly taking bribe having coming out in the public domain. Mr. Nehru said responsibility should also be fixed on District Registrar J. Dayalane who has been overseeing the affairs of the department for sometime now. He questioned the decision of the government to allow Mr. Dayalane to function as District Registrar while holding the important post of Secretary of Legislative Assembly. He is also a member of several legislative committees, the MLA said. They withdrew the protest after Special Secretary (Revenue)-cum-District Collector A. Kulothungan agreed to examine their demands.

During the incident, Anitha and her son sustained injuries and were admitted to a private hospital in Vazhapadi. The Vazhapadi police registered a case and are on the lookout for Kuppusamy. Police sources said that the accused Kuppusamy had kept the country-made gun that was used for hunting animals, hidden.
