Walker-Peters and Lumley to leave Saints

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters and goalkeeper Joe Lumley will leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of the month. Walker-Peters, who has two England caps, made 202 appearances for the Saints and scored six goals during his time at St Mary's. After initially joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, he signed a permanent contract in played 46 league games in 2023-24 as Saints were promoted to the Premier League, and 35 last season, providing two top-flight Lumley arrived from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023 and made eight appearances for Saints, with two clean sheets. He started all four of Southampton's FA Cup ties in 2023-24 and made his Premier League debut away at Brighton last 30-year-old has also previously played for Queens Park Rangers and Reading. Saints announced earlier on Wednesday that Adam Lallana has decided to call time on his playing career and announced his retirement. Last season he only played five time as his side were relegated to the Championship, towards the back end of the campaign he was heavily involved in the coaching set-up at the club. Walker-Peters 'grew as a person and player at Saints' - analysis by BBC Radio Solent's Southampton commentator Adam Blackmore:When Kyle initially arrived at Saints on loan in 2020, he was a shy young man who needed more first-team football to gain experience, with his opportunities at Spurs the summer he'd impressed Ralph Hasenhuttl enough to become a full-time Saint, and I can't think of many players in the ensuing five years who've performed as consistently as Kyle at a high level, or who have given better service than him.I've seen him grow as a person and a player during his time at the club, he's won an England cap, and he's become a gifted versatile full-back who can operate on either side of the defence, and loves nothing more than to drive forward into dangerous more than anything I think of how well he's carried himself through all the trials and tribulations he's witnessed and been part of at Saints, he's been a credit to himself and the I've never seen a player get kicked as much as Walker-Peters in the Championship two seasons ago as he played a crucial role in Saints' promotion.

Spurs consider surprise move for ex-defender in free transfer twist

Tottenham Weigh Up Return for Walker-Peters in Quietly Shrewd Move Spurs consider clever return for versatile full-back In a summer likely to be defined by bold moves and deeper shifts under Thomas Frank, Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly toying with a transfer that feels understated on the surface but could serve a dual purpose: cover and continuity. According to Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham, Spurs are considering bringing back Kyle Walker-Peters on a free transfer. The full-back, whose contract with Southampton expires on June 30, is set to become a free agent. Everton reportedly passed on the 28-year-old, choosing instead to pursue Fulham's Kenny Tete, leaving the door ajar for Tottenham. Photo IMAGO Advertisement Alasdair Gold noted on the podcast: 'The one I do believe they have considered for this summer is Kyle Walker-Peters… He's had a terrific career, over 200 appearances for Southampton, a Premier League regular for a lot of that.' What adds to the appeal is Walker-Peters' homegrown status and his ability to play comfortably on both flanks. That versatility matters in a Spurs squad that already boasts Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro, but could use reliable depth, especially with European football returning. Gold added: 'From my understanding I think he would love to come back to Spurs as well, they're his boyhood club.' Homegrown value could shape Spurs' transfer outlook While full-back is not Tottenham's most urgent position to strengthen, Walker-Peters' profile ticks several useful boxes. Homegrown, adaptable, experienced and available without a fee, the move would carry little financial risk. Photo: IMAGO Advertisement Over 200 games with Southampton, including 33 Premier League appearances in a difficult relegation campaign, show a player who has remained consistent under pressure. Emotional pull and strategic reasoning align Emotion also plays a part here. Walker-Peters emerged from Spurs' academy before leaving for first-team opportunities in 2020. That career arc, matched with Spurs' renewed sense of identity under Frank, makes a return feel more like a natural evolution than nostalgia. The chance to sign an experienced Premier League performer who understands the club's culture is a calculated option rather than a marquee statement. Our View – EPL Index Analysis The Walker-Peters link feels familiar – maybe too familiar. There is a quiet efficiency to it, but also an unavoidable air of conservatism. While some fans may appreciate the club-trained aspect, others will be asking why the club sold him in the first place, only to consider re-signing him four years later. Advertisement In truth, the move probably suits the club more than it electrifies the fanbase. Walker-Peters is not a game-changer. But he is stable, and for a Spurs side that collapsed in key moments last season, perhaps stability is more important than fireworks. There is a real question about ambition though. If this is a sign of the summer ahead, Spurs supporters may be left wondering whether this window is about raising standards or simply managing expectations. Still, as part of a broader squad rebuild, a free agent who brings depth and Premier League readiness is difficult to argue against, particularly with a new manager still calibrating his approach. The real challenge is ensuring this isn't the highlight of Spurs' window.

Spurs ‘Considering' Move to Re-Sign Former Defender in Smart Move

Tottenham Eye Walker-Peters Return in Potential Transfer Masterstroke Tottenham Hotspur may be set to pull off one of the savviest moves of the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting a return for Southampton full-back Kyle Walker-Peters is being considered. As revealed by TeamTalk, Spurs are exploring the possibility of bringing the 28-year-old back to north London, a development that could prove a low-risk, high-reward signing for new manager Thomas Frank. Advertisement Alasdair Gold, a respected journalist with a strong track record of inside Spurs knowledge, stated: 'The one I do believe they have considered for this summer is Kyle Walker-Peters… I think he has a couple of England caps as well.' Having racked up over 200 appearances for the Saints and remaining a consistent Premier League performer even during challenging seasons, Walker-Peters presents a compelling case for a free agent addition. His versatility is another attractive factor, with Gold noting: 'He's club-trained, he can play on both sides, and from my understanding I think he would love to come back to Spurs as well, they're his boyhood club.' Frank's Spurs Revolution Begins to Take Shape With Thomas Frank now at the helm following the departure of Ange Postecoglou, Spurs are entering a new era. Though full-back may not be an immediate area of concern thanks to the presence of Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro, the opportunity to sign a Premier League-proven player like Walker-Peters at zero cost is clearly tempting. Advertisement As TeamTalk reports: 'A new full-back isn't a top priority… However, the opportunity to re-sign Walker-Peters… could tempt Spurs into a move.' At 28, Walker-Peters still has plenty to offer, and his ability to cover both flanks would provide Frank with tactical flexibility. This versatility would also be valuable in a season where Spurs will be balancing domestic ambitions with a return to Champions League football. Homegrown Talent Brings More than Just Depth One of the underrated aspects of this potential signing is the homegrown status Walker-Peters holds. In an era of strict squad registration rules in both domestic and European competitions, securing players who meet homegrown criteria is increasingly important. Advertisement His familiarity with the club, style of play, and expectations surrounding Tottenham also means he could settle quickly and contribute from the outset. As Gold aptly put it: 'I can see it as a clever solution.' Photo: IMAGO Furthermore, Walker-Peters' desire to remain in the Premier League, after Southampton's relegation, aligns well with Tottenham's ambitions. Saints Exit Sets Stage for Premier League Return Walker-Peters is set to become a free agent when his Southampton contract expires on June 30, and despite interest from other clubs, including Everton, he remains unattached. TeamTalk writes: 'Everton… decided against a move for the twice-capped England international to focus on Fulham's Kenny Tete.' Advertisement This rejection opens the door for Spurs to step in and bring back a player who not only knows the club, but is still hungry for top-flight success. For Walker-Peters, a return to the club where it all began would represent a narrative-rich next chapter in his career. Our View – EPL Index Analysis From a Tottenham fan's perspective, this has all the hallmarks of a fantastic move. It's pragmatic, emotionally satisfying, and tactically smart. Thomas Frank has already shown at Brentford how he values players with adaptability and strong character, and Kyle Walker-Peters fits that mould perfectly. It's refreshing to see the club targeting players who want to be at Spurs. Walker-Peters was often underrated in his first stint, but his development since moving to the South Coast has been clear. He's tougher, more confident, and much more experienced now. The fact he can play on either side of defence is gold dust in a modern squad. Most importantly, Spurs supporters have grown tired of overpriced, disinterested signings. Bringing back someone who bleeds Lilywhite, someone who understands the expectations and culture, could have an immediate positive impact on squad morale. Plus, in a season where Champions League depth will be key, this is the kind of smart, calculated deal we need to be making. Let's hope Daniel Levy gets it over the line.
