Walker-Peters and Lumley to leave Saints

BBC News4 days ago

Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters and goalkeeper Joe Lumley will leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of the month. Walker-Peters, who has two England caps, made 202 appearances for the Saints and scored six goals during his time at St Mary's. After initially joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, he signed a permanent contract in 2020.He played 46 league games in 2023-24 as Saints were promoted to the Premier League, and 35 last season, providing two top-flight assists.Keeper Lumley arrived from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023 and made eight appearances for Saints, with two clean sheets. He started all four of Southampton's FA Cup ties in 2023-24 and made his Premier League debut away at Brighton last term. The 30-year-old has also previously played for Queens Park Rangers and Reading. Saints announced earlier on Wednesday that Adam Lallana has decided to call time on his playing career and announced his retirement. Last season he only played five time as his side were relegated to the Championship, towards the back end of the campaign he was heavily involved in the coaching set-up at the club.
Walker-Peters 'grew as a person and player at Saints' - analysis
by BBC Radio Solent's Southampton commentator Adam Blackmore:When Kyle initially arrived at Saints on loan in 2020, he was a shy young man who needed more first-team football to gain experience, with his opportunities at Spurs limited.By the summer he'd impressed Ralph Hasenhuttl enough to become a full-time Saint, and I can't think of many players in the ensuing five years who've performed as consistently as Kyle at a high level, or who have given better service than him.I've seen him grow as a person and a player during his time at the club, he's won an England cap, and he's become a gifted versatile full-back who can operate on either side of the defence, and loves nothing more than to drive forward into dangerous areas. But more than anything I think of how well he's carried himself through all the trials and tribulations he's witnessed and been part of at Saints, he's been a credit to himself and the club. And I've never seen a player get kicked as much as Walker-Peters in the Championship two seasons ago as he played a crucial role in Saints' promotion.

Gyokeres makes Arsenal transfer decision as problem arises for Guehi alternative

The Viktor Gyokeres saga continues, with Sporting Lisbon making a decision on their want-away striker, while Arsenal continue their attempts to sign Valencia star Cristhian Mosquera Arsenal know they need a busy summer transfer window, having finished second in the Premier League for the third straight season – and things are beginning to hot up. They are working on transfers right across the positions, with back-up goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga set to join from Chelsea, midfielder Martin Zubimendi arriving from Real Sociedad and Christian Norgaard coming from Brentford. The Gunners also want a centre-back, a top-class winger and a centre-forward to bolster Mikel Arteta 's squad. ‌ The slugginess in which they are pursuing a striker has annoyed some supporters who are desperate for a big-money signing up front. The question there has been boiled down to: Benjamin Sesko or Viktor Gyokeres. ‌ That question hasn't been answered yet, but sporting director Andrea Berta continues to work on it. Meanwhile, Arsenal are also chasing a centre-back to strengthen their options at the back. Here Mirror Football brings you the latest in those areas – and more. Gyokeres stance clear Arsenal are still understood to prefer Sesko to Gyokeres, but the Portuguese press has offered a different perspective on the saga. O Jogo reports that Gyokeres has been granted permission to join up late with Sporting for pre-season. The Swedish striker has reportedly told Sporting he won't play for them again and is determined to force through a move as soon as possible. He only has eyes for Arsenal – and the Gunners know his stance. Arsenal previously had an offer of €55m (£47m) plus bonuses rejected and the report says they hope that €60m (£51m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in bonuses will be enough to land him. They have apparently agreed this with Gyokeres' agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, but Sporting president Frederico Varandas wants €80m (£68m) – and he's the one that matters. Valencia want to keep Mosquera Arsenal have already seen a bid rejected by Valencia for Cristhian Mosquera and the Spanish club ideally want to keep the young defender. He's entering the final 12 months of his current contract, meaning the time has come for a new deal or to sell. ‌ Valencia captain Jose Gaya has summed up the mood around Mosquera and his team-mates Javi Guerra and Cesar Tarrega. He told Spanish radio:"I would be delighted if all three could stay because I think they can give a lot this new season and bring a lot of joy to the fans. As of today, unless there's any breaking news, I think all three of them are still with us, and I hope it continues like this, and they continue to grow as players." Arsenal will continue the pursuit of Mosquera, who is now their primary centre-back target, with Mirror Football understanding that Liverpool are set to win the race for Marc Guehi. Partey heading for exit ‌ Thomas Partey's contract expires on June 30 and, with no sign of an agreement, he appears set to leave Arsenal as a free agent. He has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but reports in Turkey say he could be joining Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce's sporting director, Devin Ozek, has reportedly been in London to hold talks with the Ghana international's agents. Jose Mourinho has been keen to sign Partey, who is ahead of Leicester 's Wilfried Ndidi on their transfer list. Arsenal have already prepared for his departure, with Zubimendi and Norgaard arriving to fill the gaps left by Partey and Jorginho.

Chelsea boss lashes out at Club World Cup organisers after yet another weather delay

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, June 28 (Reuters) - Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca lashed out after a two-hour weather delay disrupted his team's last-16 Club World Cup victory over Benfica on Saturday, suggesting the United States was not a suitable country for the competition - a year before it is due to host the men's World Cup. Chelsea beat Benfica 4-1 in extra-time to qualify for the quarter-finals after a game that ended four hours and 39 minutes after kicking off, following a two-hour interruption due to a storm warning. It was the sixth time that a game was stopped at the 32-club tournament because of the risk of lightning. "For me personally, it's not football," Maresca told a press conference. "I think it's a joke. It's not football. "I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven or eight games, that means that probably this is not the right place to do this competition. "It's a fantastic competition. It's the Club World Cup, all the best clubs are here," he added. "But six, seven games suspended? It's not normal. In a World Cup how many have they suspended? Probably zero. In a European (championship), how many games? Zero. There is some problem." FIFA, which organised the tournament, was not immediately available for comment. Chelsea were 1-0 up when the players were asked to leave the pitch and play only resumed almost two hours later. "The game was very good for 85 minutes, then we stopped for two hours, and when we started it was a completely different game. It's not the same game because you break the tempo," Maresca said.

‘It's not football': Maresca furious after Chelsea's two-hour weather delay

A furious Enzo Maresca suggested that the US is not fit to host the Club World Cup after Chelsea's 4-1 victory over Benfica in the last 16 was delayed for almost two hours in Charlotte because of a severe weather event. Chelsea were 1-0 up and cruising towards the last eight when play was stopped with five minutes of normal left at the Bank of America Stadium after a lightning strike in the area. The teams were ordered off the pitch by the officials had to stay warm in their respective dressing rooms before play resumed after an hour and 53 minutes. There was further frustration for Chelsea when a controversial last-minute penalty allowed Benfica to force extra-time. The Premier League side eventually pushed through to win 4-1, four hours and 38 minutes after kick-off, but there was concern about off-pitch events a year before the men's World Cup is held in Canada, Mexico and the US. 'For 85 minutes we were in control of the game,' Maresca said. 'After the break, the game changed completely. For me it's not football. It's already seven, eight, nine games that they suspended. I think it's a joke to be honest, it's not football. It's not for us. You cannot be inside. I struggle to understand. I can understand that for security reasons, you suspend the game. But if you suspend seven, eight games, that means that probably [this] is not the right place to do this competition.' Storms have caused six games, all held in different cities, to be suspended during the tournament. Teams also had to deal with a heatwave covering much of the east and centre of the US. 'I'm very happy,' Maresca said. 'We are in the last eight of this fantastic competition. The team was very good. For me, one of the best performances in the last weeks and months. 'The problem is that when the game is suspended, it's not football. Guys, it's not football. You suspend the game, it's not football. It's completely something different. They [Benfica] scored because they need to chase. We are inside, we are winning. You go outside, mentally different. It's difficult. 'We had an hour and a half, two-hour stop. Then it started completely different. It's not the same game because you break the tempo. So two hours inside; people speak with the family outside, if they were good, the security. People eating, people laughing, people talking on the mobile. It's two hours. That's why I said it's not football. 'It's something that you struggle to understand. But we tried to go out, continue in the same way, knowing that it was difficult. It's not random that for 85 minutes, we didn't concede nothing. And then for five minutes, we conceded a few chances. Why? It's because it started a completely different game.' It was put to Maresca that the implementation of the protocol risked damaging the tournament's standing. 'Guys, please, don't misunderstand me, I said it's a fantastic competition,' Maresca said. 'It's top. We are happy to be in the last eight. 'But something happens, six, seven games suspended. In a World Cup, how many games are suspended? Zero, probably. In Europe, how many games? Zero. We are here, two weeks, they're already suspended six, seven games. There is some problem. We are happy to be in this competition. But it's something that is not normal.'
