SpiceJet receives first two overhauled engines from StandardAero

By Aman Shukla Published on July 3, 2025, 12:39 IST SpiceJet has taken a major stride in its ongoing fleet revival plan by receiving the first two overhauled engines from global MRO leader StandardAero. This includes a CFM LEAP-1B engine, which powers the Boeing 737 MAX, refurbished at StandardAero's Houston facility in the U.S., and a Q400 engine from its Singapore facility. The airline also recently brought another Boeing 737 NG aircraft back into active service after successful maintenance, signalling a steady and structured effort to restore its operational capacity. In total, SpiceJet has sent 17 engines for overhaul as part of its broader fleet restoration strategy. With the first two engines now back in service, the airline expects a consistent return of additional overhauled engines in the months ahead. Out of these, six LEAP-1B engines were sent to StandardAero's Houston unit, while seven Q400 engines were dispatched to its Singapore facility. Additionally, four engines were sent to Carlyle Aviation to support the reactivation of grounded Boeing 737 NG aircraft. This move marks a significant push by SpiceJet to enhance reliability, increase aircraft availability, and support its long-term growth plans. 'This milestone reflects Sanad's unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, technical expertise and outstanding service excellence,' said Mansoor Janahi, Managing Director and Group CEO of Sanad. 'Our expanded collaboration with GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines strengthens our long-standing partnership while advancing the UAE's ambition to be a global center for aerospace technology and industrial advancement.' 'Sanad is demonstrating its ability to deliver world-class MRO services,' said Alan Kelly, General Manager of CFM LEAP Engine Services at GE Aerospace. 'Not only will Middle Eastern carriers benefit from local capability, but the broader MRO ecosystem will also benefit from the additional capacity.' 'Sanad's work addresses rising demand for LEAP-powered aircraft and associated engine maintenance,' said Nicolas Potier, Vice President of Support & Services for Safran Aircraft Engines. 'This collaboration shows how the MRO ecosystem for LEAP engines continues to growth and mature.' To support this expansion, Sanad will invest in infrastructure, new tooling, equipment, and operational capabilities. These enhancements will be implemented within Sanad's existing MRO and test cell facilities in Abu Dhabi and are expected to create 140 new jobs, with a strong focus on Emiratization and national workforce development in line with the company's long-term goals. By 2027, Sanad will be fully equipped to perform complete overhaul and testing services for all LEAP engine offloads under this agreement, further solidifying its role as a trusted MRO partner for the global aviation industry and contributing to the UAE's broader ambitions for industrial growth and global aerospace leadership. *CFM and LEAP are trademarks of CFM International, a 50/50 joint company between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines.

Lufthansa Technik breaks ground on engine maintenance facility in Calgary

Lufthansa Technik has broken ground on a C$120m ($87m) aircraft engine maintenance and repair facility at YYC Calgary Airport in Calgary, Canada. The facility will cater to a broad range of North American carriers, focusing on near-wing and quick-turn services. Over the next two years, a 150,000ft² engine repair shop will be developed in partnership with Calgary Airports for Lufthansa Technik Canada, a subsidiary of Lufthansa Technik. The facility will primarily service CFM International LEAP-1B engines, which power the Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Additionally, it will feature Canada's first engine test cell for latest-generation aircraft engines. The project is expected to create a minimum of 160 permanent jobs at Lufthansa Technik Canada by 2030, with an additional 170 temporary jobs during the construction phase. The engine repair station and test cell are scheduled to be operational by 2027. Lufthansa Technik vice-president of commercial engine services Georg Fanta said: "The increasing number of new aircraft leads to a growing demand for maintenance capacities for their engines." Lufthansa Technik Canada is working closely with Calgary Airports (formerly the Calgary Airport Authority) to finalise the design and logistics of the facility. The airport authority is responsible for the financing, planning, construction, and deployment phases, as part of YYC AeroNex, a hub for aviation support and training services at Calgary Airport. A long-term lease agreement has been signed with Lufthansa Technik Canada. Calgary Airports president and CEO Chris Dinsdale said: "This engine repair station and test cell will boost regional economic development and reinforce Calgary's role as a gateway for aviation innovation and excellence." "Lufthansa Technik breaks ground on engine maintenance facility in Calgary" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand. 'Significant demand': Canada's aviation and aerospace industries may be short 55,000 workers by 2035

Article content Article content The University of Calgary, Mount Royal University and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology all have programs related to aerospace and aviation. Article content An Aerospace Innovation Hub — operated by the U of C with the help of several partner organizations — gives aerospace startups and entrepreneurs support and funding, while allowing them a place to test their technologies. Article content Aircraft maintenance engineers and structures technicians are among those trained at SAIT's Art Smith Aero Centre, located at the Calgary International Airport. They also provide diplomas in avionics technology and, more recently, certificates for remotely piloted aircraft (drones). Article content The institution is just shy of 400 students at its aviation campus this year, said Josh Brewster, associate dean of aviation and technology at SAIT's school of transportation. Article content Article content 'We're excited for aviation in Alberta. We think it's a great opportunity to diversify — these are excellent careers,' said Brewster. Article content High demand for positions, particularly aircraft maintenance engineers, is being driven by companies like WestJet and Lufthansa Technik, the latter of which signed an agreement with SAIT to develop new aviation training. Article content Lufthansa provides maintenance for WestJet's LEAP-1B engines on its fleet of Boeing 737's. In February, the two companies signed a long-term agreement valued up to US$3 billion, part of which involves the construction of a new engine maintenance facility at the airport. Article content Aerospace and aviation programming at the school has nearly doubled since 2019, made possible through their partnership with the Government of Alberta, according to Brewster. Article content 'Like so many industries, the aviation sector is not only growing, but it's experiencing an aging workforce and retirements. So between those two things, there's definitely a significant demand,' he said. Article content As de Havilland looks to expand its footprint in the Calgary area, the expectation is that will further add to demand, according to Brewster. Article content
