Hong Kong university student found guilty of insulting national anthem during World Cup qualifier

A Hong Kong university student has been found guilty of insulting the national anthem during a World Cup qualifier football match between the city's team and Iran in June last year. Lau Pun-hei, a 19-year-old student in politics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was convicted on Wednesday for turning his back to the pitch while the Chinese national anthem, 'March of the Volunteers,' played ahead of the match at the Hong Kong Stadium on June 6, 2024. Magistrate Kestrel Lam of the Eastern Magistrates' Courts said the playing of the anthem before a match 'represented national pride, unity and identity.' 'That the defendant chose to turn his back to the pitch was obviously improper and disrespectful,' Lam said in Cantonese. The magistrate noted that Lau had turned his back to the pitch only during the Chinese anthem and that the student faced the pitch and clapped during the Iranian anthem. Lam found that it was a deliberate act to demonstrate Lau's dissatisfaction with, or contempt for, the national anthem. 'Different people may have different feelings towards the nation and its anthem. Supporters may sing along. Meanwhile, people who don't support the country should allow the anthem to be played solemnly,' the magistrate said. Lam rejected the defence's argument that some other people in the stadium, including the police officers who filmed the spectators while the national anthem was being played, also had their backs facing the pitch. The police officers were carrying out their duties, Lam said, but the student had no reason to do the same. Whether an act constitutes an insult to the national anthem must be based on the facts and the circumstances in the case, the magistrate added. He also rejected the defence's argument that the law was vague and could infringe upon one's freedom of expression. Steven Kwan, Lau's lawyer, told the court that the student was a keen supporter of Hong Kong and a staunch advocate of an eco-friendly lifestyle, showing his care for the world. Lau's offence was of a 'minor nature,' Kwan said, as his act was 'quiet, peaceful, and did not involve any violence.' Kwan urged the court to adopt a non-custodial sentence given the defendant's young age. Lam scheduled sentencing for August 13 to allow the court to receive a report on the defendant's background. Lau was given bail pending sentencing. Hong Kong passed the National Anthem Ordinance in 2020, which criminalises 'insulting behaviour' towards the anthem. Under the law, one must 'stand solemnly' and 'not behave in a way disrespectful to the national anthem.' Offenders may be punished by up to three years in prison and a fine of HK$50,000.

Bandar Kuching MP calls for temporary halt to ART works in Taman Stutong Indah

Lam assisted and mediated discussions between the residents, Sarawak Metro, and the ART contractors, resulting in several immediate measures being agreed upon to address the residents' concerns. KUCHING (July 30): Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii has called on Sarawak Metro to temporarily halt all Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) works in Taman Stutong Indah until a stakeholder dialogue can be convened and the residents' concerns have been fully addressed. Dr Yii said his office will send a formal letter requesting a meeting with Sarawak Metro and the project's designer‑consultant to review the ART track's alignment and design in full transparency. 'It is vital for all stakeholders to be involved so that every concern is addressed constructively,' he said in the statement today. Meanwhile, Dr Yii said his special assistant, George Lam, has successfully assisted and mediated discussions between the residents, Sarawak Metro, and the ART contractors, resulting in several immediate measures being agreed upon to address the residents' concerns. 'Sarawak Metro and the contractors have agreed to instal metal hoardings to prevent dust and debris from spreading to the surrounding residential area during construction. 'They have also committed to improving traffic management in the area and to issuing prior notices to residents if any closures or diversions could affect road access to the housing estate. 'To maintain the cleanliness of the surrounding area, the contractors have instructed their workers to properly dispose of all construction waste and rubbish. 'Furthermore, the contractors will direct their workers to avoid parking their vehicles directly in front of residential units in order to ensure better accessibility and privacy for the residents in the area,' he said. Dr Yii stressed that while the ART project promises long-term benefits for Kuching, its implementation must not compromise the well-being of neighbouring communities. 'As MP, I believe it is my duty to act as a bridge between the people and the authorities, ensuring that development projects are implemented responsibly with minimal disruption to the surrounding community,' he said. Dr Yii said his office will continue to follow up on these measures, maintain open communication among all parties, and convene further dialogue sessions as necessary for the good of the people.

#SHOWBIZ: HK actress Rosina Lam, husband celebrate 10th wedding anniversary in Malaysia

HONG KONG: Actress Rosina Lam and her husband, finance executive Jason Mok, recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in Malaysia. On July 27, Lam, 38, shared a group photo on social media featuring her husband and several celebrity friends, including popular actors Joel Chan, Charmaine Sheh, Shaun Tam, and Toby Leung. In the photo, Lam, who was born in mainland China, was seen giving a thumbs-up while her husband leaned affectionately against her, holding her arm in a sweet display of affection. The couple tied the knot on July 25, 2015, in a private ceremony at a mansion in Hong Kong's prestigious Victoria Peak, where property prices reportedly reach HK$1.5 billion (RM810 million). "Happy 10th wedding anniversary! Let's stay together through thick and thin! Thank you, brothers and sisters, for your company," the TVB star captioned her post. Despite persistent rumours since May suggesting Lam is involved in a bankruptcy petition, the award-winning actress remains unfazed and in good spirits in her latest social media updates. She previously addressed the speculation on May 30, explaining that while her husband's rental property company is involved in a legal dispute and is appealing the case, it doesn't affect her personally. "I'm not bankrupt. Please stop spreading rumours. The matter has been handed over to our lawyer," she said at the time. The case is reportedly scheduled for a hearing on Aug 26.

ART: Tmn Stutong Indah residents claim KUTS contractors sought use of home electricity for construction activities

Taman Stutong Indah residents voice their grievances to Lam (right) during his visit. KUCHING (July 29): The Kuching Urban Transformation System's (KUTS) contractors undertaking the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project at Taman Stutong Indah here had allegedly requested to use electricity from a resident's home to support construction activities, said George Lam. The Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak secretary said this was brought to his attention by the residents concerned, prompting him to visit the site. 'This is highly unprofessional and unacceptable,' he said in a statement issued yesterday following the visit. Lam said according to the residents at Taman Stutong Indah, they were not given any prior notice about the construction works. 'There was no official communication regarding the timeline, alignment, and expected disturbances. 'The residents are experiencing ongoing disturbances including noise from machinery and dust. These disruptions are affecting their daily lives and privacy.' He added that based on his observations during the visit, the construction area was not properly secured, while heavy machinery were operating 'very close to the residential area without clear barriers or warning signs to protect the public'. In addition, Lam said large construction lorries were crossing the main road regularly without proper traffic control, creating a dangerous environment for road users in the area. 'At a point of the construction, there was a sudden road blockage without any prior notification, creating confusion and inconvenience. 'As such, I urge the KUTS project undertaker, Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd, to temporarily halt this construction until a mutual consent is achieved between the residents and the responsible parties,' he said.
