Indian phonemakers dial up fight for volume control

New Delhi: Contract manufacturers in India are competing vigorously in the high-volume smartphone assembly segment, hoping to capture more orders from Chinese brands looking to expand their manufacturing footprint in the country amid geopolitical shifts. As Chinese brands grow volumes in India, some even starting exports from the country, they are diversifying their supply chains to stay cost competitive instead of relying on a sole Indian supplier as the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for smartphones nears completion. Lenovo-owned Motorola, which was solely sourcing smartphones from Dixon Technologies , has started routing some volumes to Dixon's rival Karbonn, which is also eligible to receive PLI benefits. Motorola is also Dixon's largest customer, accounting for 12 million units in FY25. Dixon has been the sole Indian company to claim benefits for the first few years of the PLI scheme as others failed to get clients. The scenario, however, changed in the last few years with companies like Karbonn, Micromax, and Lava, also becoming beneficiaries of the PLI scheme. These companies may also claim government benefits along with Dixon if they achieve the required targets. Dixon's second-largest customer, Chinese ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) Longcheer, contributing 7 million of Dixon's production volume in FY25, has also started routing around 2% volume to Karbonn from Dixon in line with its expansion in India from May. In a June 24 report, PhillipCapital said Karbonn handled about 5% of Motorola's total production volume in January and February, surging to 25% in April and May. Motorola's supply chain diversification tracks a sharp growth in sales and exports from India to the US after the Donald Trump administration levied steep tariffs on China. "Motorola's monthly run rate has increased from '2,400 crore (which was previously fully handled by Dixon) to '3,000 crore. The entire increment of '600 crore has been allocated to Karbonn," an industry analyst told ET. Longcheer too is expanding its presence in India to hedge from future action against Chinese exports. Longcheer's volumes could quickly increase in the coming months, reaching at least 15% of its total volume in India, as the ODM did not have an exclusive agreement with Dixon, said the analyst cite above. Dixon's volumes are also being poached by Bhagwati Products (Micromax) which has a JV with Huaqin, another Chinese ODM, among the world's largest. The JV also restricts Dixon's potential earnings from its strategic ownership of Vivo's manufacturing unit in India, PhillipCapital said. "(Dixon's) Management expects the JV to handle two-thirds of Vivo India's mobile phone volumes. Assuming a proportional volume-to-value ratio conversion, the JV would generate a top line of '160 billion at optimal utilisation, of which Dixon's share would be '80 billion," the report said. Industry executives said the Bhagwati-Huaqin JV has ramped up volumes to 1.6 million smartphones per month, starting afresh from the second half of 2024. "Bhagwati is one of the fastest-growing EMS players in India. They are projected to close June at 1.6 million units per month, and are aiming for more market share. This rapid ramp-up has occurred within a year, primarily from Oppo and Vivo under the partnership with Huaqin," said an industry executive. Dixon, Karbonn, Longcheer, Motorola, and Bhagwati did not respond to email queries. Both Longcheer and Huaqin manufacture entry-level smartphones for major Chinese brands. Longcheer currently manufactures phones for Vivo and Realme through Dixon, and Vivo and Oppo from Karbonn, while Huaqin relies on Bhagwati for Vivo and Oppo models, and DBG for Xiaomi's volumes, the analyst said. However, with the Indian smartphone market stagnant at 150-160 million units annually, escalating competition is expected to limit growth of local firms, with Dixon facing the highest risk of losing volumes to rivals, market trackers said. Excluding Apple and Samsung, which have their own supply chains in India, the addressable market for contract manufacturers is 80-90 million units per year, which is expected to be split between three-four major manufacturers eventually. "I foresee the market having space for at least 3-4 players in the coming years, instead of just one. The volumes will be commanded by players which can offer the desired quality of service. Cost comes secondary," one of the executives said.

More Android phones sail to foreign shores via India

New Delhi: Not just Apple's iPhones, shipments of Android phones from India to the US are also witnessing strong growth, driven by the Trump administration's tariff policies as well as the Indian government's export push. Lenovo-owned Motorola exported 1.6 million smartphones that run on the Android operating system from India in the first five months of 2025, with 99% of those going to the US, according to data sourced from market research firm Canalys. It had exported 1 million units in 2024. Motorola, which makes phones through Indian contract manufacturer Dixon Technologies , historically catered to the US market almost entirely from China, which has since April been hit by a 55% US tariff compared with 26% levied on India, said industry experts. Smartphones, though, have been temporarily excluded from the so-called reciprocal tariffs, but uncertainty on the US policy persists. The US levies a 46% tariff on Vietnam, Samsung's main export hub for the American market. The tariffs are currently on a 90-day pause as Vietnam negotiates a trade agreement. Live Events While both Samsung and Motorola have increased exports to the US as well as other markets from India, Apple is by far the largest exporter of smartphones in general - and to the US - from India. Boost from PLI Scheme Motorola and Samsung didn't respond to ET's request for comment. 'We're expanding capacity by 50% from our current levels for our anchor customer (Motorola) to meet their increased order book, a large part of it will be on account of exports to North America (US) in light of the evolving geopolitical scenario,' Dixon Technologies managing director Atul Lall said on a recent earnings call. Smartphone brands are also ramping up exports from India to Africa and the UAE amid the government's push to transform the country into a global manufacturing hub for smartphones, triggered by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Dixon, Samsung and Apple's manufacturing partners Foxconn and Tata Electronics receive incentives under this scheme. Smartphone exports from India crossed 35 million units in the January-May period, according to Canalys. Apple accounted for 20.5 million of these units, 80% of which went to the US. Brands had exported about 60 million units in 2024, with Apple accounting for half of those. Samsung and Motorola were the other major exporters. An industry expert said the likes of Samsung, Motorola, Transsion, and HMD Global (which manufactures for the Nokia brand) are increasingly exporting smartphones from India, boosted by the PLI scheme that make them globally competitive on costs and allow them to export to markets which offer enough capacities. Canalys said Samsung, which makes on its own and through contract manufacturer Dixon, is on track to meet, or even exceed, its 2024 export volumes, having nearly hit the mid-way mark by May 2025. The company exported 25.3 million smartphones in 2024 and by May 2025, the company has already exported 11.4 million handsets. Samsung still leads in exports (among Android brands), but its growth is becoming flat as destination markets shift due to tariff uncertainties, Canalys analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said. 'Motorola is emerging as a surprise mover, nearly doubling its US-bound exports.' Transsion brands Infinix, Tecno and iTel have also ramped up exports. Dixon acquired a majority stake in Transsion's manufacturing business in May last year. Lall of Dixon said it has a strong export order book to African markets where Transsion has an over 80% market share. The company is now also considering exports of Google Pixel phones, which it manufactures in India. India's smartphone market leader, Chinese brand Vivo, too has been exporting small volumes from India. The company exported around 350,000 handsets in 2024, and has already shipped 250,000 handsets till May this year, mainly to Thailand and Malaysia. Vivo, which moved to a bigger production facility following a strategic manufacturing partnership with Dixon, is likely to scale up exports further from this year. Emails to the brands went unanswered. China disadvantage Some market trackers feel the opportunity for Chinese brands to export from India remains much lower compared with Apple and Samsung. 'Chinese brands do not have access to the US markets, and India is actually their largest market outside China. They also get more incentives and better costs when exporting from China. It does not make much economic sense for them to export from India,' an analyst told ET asking not to be named. He added that general margins in mobile phone manufacturing is around 2-3% in India, but because of export incentives in China, the margins are much higher for Chinese brands.

Is Apple closer to launching a foldable iPhone? This analyst thinks so

Apple plans to launch a foldable iPhone as early as next year, joining other major smartphone makers such as Samsung, Motorola, and Google. The information comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who on Thursday shared the update on Apple's potential plans to launch a foldable iPhone. Kuo is often considered reliable when it comes to past predictions about Apple products. According to Kuo, Apple's first foldable phone could feature a display made by Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, which is reportedly planning to produce 8 million panels for a device expected to launch next year. However, Apple has yet to finalise other components of its debut foldable phone, including the device's hinge. In a post on the social media platform X, Kuo noted that Apple's plans for a foldable phone are not yet finalised and remain subject to change. He added that if Apple does launch a foldable phone next year, it will likely be priced on the 'premium' side. For Apple, its iPhone business remains extremely profitable, accounting for half of the company's revenue. In the last quarter alone, the iPhone generated $46.84 billion in revenue, highlighting how lucrative the iPhone is to Apple's overall business. However, iPhone sales have remained relatively flat in recent years. With a foldable iPhone, Apple could attract new consumers, and a more expensive foldable model could potentially increase the device's average selling price (ASP), bringing in more revenue. Apple remains the only mainstream smartphone maker that doesn't offer a foldable phone, while its competitors—including Samsung, Lenovo-owned Motorola, and even Google—already offer devices that fold in half. Meanwhile, companies like Huawei have introduced trifold phones, which feature two folding points and can display content across a single, double, or triple screen. Regular foldable devices from Samsung and Google fold once in half, either vertically or horizontally. Samsung and Motorola remain the biggest makers of foldable phones in the market. According to research firm TrendForce, only 1.5% of all smartphones sold last year were foldable. It remains to be seen whether Apple's first foldable phone will be a flip-style device or one that opens like a book with a large, tablet-like screen inside. Foldable phones have become more durable over the years, though their user interfaces remain somewhat unpolished. Rumours of Apple making a foldable phone aren't new. In fact, multiple reports claim that Apple is also working on a foldable iPad and a MacBook hybrid. The rumours first began to surface when DSCC analyst Ross Young published a report in 2022 stating that Apple had been discussing a 20-inch foldable computing device with suppliers. For this year, however, Apple's lineup includes a 'slim' iPhone 17 Air—a thinner version of its flagship device that is expected to replace the iPhone Plus model – alongside the mainline iPhone 17 series, including the higher-end iPhone 17 Pro Max. The next iPhone launch is expected in September, when Apple typically holds its fall media event. The mid-range Motorola Edge (2025) has a US release date and price tag attached to its name at last

The moment many of Motorola's cash-strapped US-based fans have been waiting for so long has finally arrived. After releasing no less than five different Edge 60 series smartphones across Europe and Asia over the last few months, the Lenovo-owned brand is (just about) ready to start taking your order for a single new Edge model stateside. Unimaginatively dubbed the Motorola Edge (2025), this unsurprisingly follows in the footsteps of the mid-range US-centric Edge (2024) with a middling set of specs and features of its own largely inspired by the "regular" Edge 60 rather than the higher-end Edge 60 Pro. 6.7-inch Super HD p-OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate technology and up to 4500 nits brightness; MediaTek Dimensity 7400 processor; Android 15 ; ; 8GB RAM; 256GB internal storage space; 50MP primary rear-facing camera with Sony LYTIA 700C sensor; 50MP ultra-wide-angle lens with built-in Macro Vision technology; 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and 30x Super Zoom; 50MP front-facing camera with autofocus; 5,200mAh battery; 68W TurboPower wired charging support; 15W wireless charging capabilities; Corning Gorilla Glass 7i screen protection; IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance; MIL-STD-810H certification; Under-display fingerprint sensor; Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos technology and Hi-Res certified sound; Side-mounted AI Key; Next Move, Catch Me Up, Pay Attention, Remember This AI features; 161.19 x 73.06 x 7.99mm dimensions; 181 grams weight; Vegan leather finish; Pantone Deep Forest color. If you want a state-of-the-art alternative to the likes of Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra or Google's Pixel 9 Pro XL, you're going to have to look elsewhere. As budget 5G phones go, however, this is a pretty compelling value proposition at a recommended US price of $549.99 (with no strings attached, of course). The Edge 2025 looks familiar but decidedly snazzy in its lone US color option. | Image Credit -- Motorola Compared to the Motorola Edge (2024), which also started at $550 around this time last year, the Edge (2025) comes with an extra rear-facing snapper, a slightly larger but curiously enough slightly less smooth screen, an evidently improved selfie camera, a bit more battery juice, a more robust construction, and an added physical button. Oh, and of course, a different processor, although Motorola has chosen the MediaTek route instead of the more popular Qualcomm path this time around. All in all, this certainly qualifies as a satisfactory list of upgrades, which doesn't make it any less painful for Android power users to see Motorola "forget" about an Edge+ flagship yet again. After establishing what devices Motorola's new US mid-range soldier should not be compared with, let's talk about this bad boy's actual rivals for a bit. First up, there's Google's $499 Pixel 9a. That's clearly the better choice from a long-term software support standpoint, but its 6.3-inch display might prove a little... cramped for some of you fine bargain hunters out there. Which brings me to Samsung's 6.7-inch Galaxy S24 FE. Now that's an expansive budget-friendly flagship, but if you're not lucky to find it at a discount, its $650 starting price (with only 128GB storage) could feel a little steep for most prospective Motorola Edge (2025) buyers. Speaking of discounts, history suggests Motorola might have some launch surprises up its sleeve, so be sure to watch out for those and maybe not rush to pay the full 550 bucks as soon as the Edge (2025) goes on sale in the US on June 5. That release date is good for unlocked units available directly from the handset's manufacturer, as well as major third-party retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. As far as carriers go, T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile , Total Wireless, Visible, Spectrum, and Xfinity Mobile are the only ones officially confirmed to pick up the phone "in the coming months."
