Mum slams 'nightmare' Corfu hotel with 'no English food' and '€1.50 water bill'
Susan Edwards said her holiday was 'horrendous' from the minute she arrived at the Greek island of Corfu with her daughter and three other family members A fuming mum has vowed never to book with TUI again following a "nightmare" all-inclusive trip to Corfu, where she claims there was "no English food" or hotel entertainment. Susan Edwards embarked on a seven-night holiday to the Greek island on 12 May. She stayed at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel with her cousins, aged 77 and 78, her daughter, 30, and second cousin, 50. However, Susan, 69, from Westerhope, described the holiday as "horrendous from the minute [they] got there." The holidaymaker explained: "It was all-inclusive, £750 each we paid and there was no food we could eat and we couldn't have anything to drink. "I have to be careful because I have ulcerative colitis so there's certain things I can't eat. The all inclusive drinks were wine, lager, ouzo, or brandy. Yes, there were soft drinks, but we had to pay €1.50 for water." Susan and her party arrived at the hillside hotel around 2pm on 12 May, ready to enjoy some food and refreshments after their long journey. After climbing a large ramp to reach the hotel reception, Susan said she was told that pool-side food would be served at 5pm for guests, which she claims was a "one-inch square of baklava". Her dissatisfaction only got worse the next day when she discovered there was "no English food" available at the hotel. Describing the grub on offer, Susan said: "On a morning you could have toast, a hard boiled egg, or something in sauce," Chronicle Live reports. "There was no bacon. For breakfast there was mozzarella and sliced tomatoes. There was no hot bacon or sausage. "We got chips one day. One day out of the whole lot. There was fish, sardines and rice - I was sick to death of looking at rice. There was pasta and salads, none of this was marked (labelled). One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. It's the worst holiday I've ever been on." The mum says she couldn't enjoy her preferred drink during her holiday because she doesn't fancy ouzo and doesn't drink brandy. She explained that she would normally have bottled lager or one Bacardi and Coke, which she said would have cost her €9 and would have been a different brand. "By the time we paid £750 for the holiday, €70 tourist tax for me and my daughter and an extra £450 for both of our meals, I could have been to the Caribbean on that", Susan fumed. TUI's website describes holidays at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel as being "all about the laidback life" where "ping pong and pool are the liveliest activities on the agenda", aside from the occasional live music and Greek night. It also says the four-star hotel has its own private patch of beach "just steps away". However, Susan claimed there was no entertainment at the hotel which is "stuck there in the middle of nowhere". She added: "There was a private beach but it was so steep we couldn't get down to it and it was 150 yards from the hotel." "There's a ramp at the side of the hotel that you have to try and pull your case up when you arrive. My daughter was up and down, up and down, trying to pull everyone's case up for them." She also expressed her frustration over not being able to get a second key for the room she shared with her daughter. Susan explained: "I asked for a second key for my daughter because sometimes I get tired in the afternoon and rather than lying in the sun and getting burned. "But if I went up to have a sleep, my daughter wouldn't be able to get into the room. She would have to wake me up to get in. I asked for a second key but I was told 'no, too expensive'." Susan said she usually holidays in Spain with her cousins and would always fly with TUI as she felt comfortable knowing "there's a big company behind you if anything goes wrong." However, this time, her confidence in TUI has been shaken due to what she perceives as an inadequate response from the travel firm. She has been offered £100 in holiday vouchers by TUI, but she claims that other guests she met at the hotel have been offered more after complaining. Susan has declined TUI's final £100 voucher offer. "In the past I've paid more to get on a TUI flight because if anything happened I've always thought you've got a big company behind you if anything goes wrong. Not anymore. This holiday was a nightmare," Susan said. A spokesperson for TUI UK said: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. We have been in touch directly with Mrs Edwards to come to a resolution."

But the hotel boss has defended what they had on offer, branding her claims as 'false and disrespectful'. Manager Makis Triantafyllos told The Sun the food service is 'generous and diverse, offering fresh salads, fruits, hot and cold dishes daily'. He said: 'Targeting a hotel with excellent ratings (8+/10 on and 4.3/5 on Google) and many loyal, returning guests, based solely on questionable accusations, is both unfair and damaging.' Makis added Susan even complained to staff about the weather while she was there, and was 'sarcastic and dismissive'. Susan allegedly complained about not having a second key for the room she shared with her daughter, but the manager said this was taken off of her after 'it was used solely to keep the electricity running – leaving the air conditioning on 24 hours a day, even with open windows and the room unoccupied'. To be fair to Susan, the hotel's TripAdvisor page shows that she is not the only disgruntled holiday maker at the Lido Corfu Sun Hotel. In May alone, five out of the six reviews gave one-star reviews with titles like 'good luck', 'absolutely disgusting', 'don't go', and 'close this hotel down'. Among their complaints are issues about food, that it is too far from 'Corfu town', and broken toilet seats. Tui said: 'We are sorry to hear that Mrs Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday. Corfu hotel regulars hit back at 'pathetic chavs' after Brit gran moans about 'no English food'
British holidaymakers have defended a popular hotel in Corfu after a number of guests - including a furious grandmother who complained of 'no English food' - left scathing reviews online. The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel has been inundated with negative reviews on TripAdvisor throughout May, including a relentless evaluation from Susan Edwards, who recently shared her 'nightmare' experience at the all-inclusive, four-star hotel. Ms Edwards, 69, from Newcastle, paid £750 for the seven-night holiday to the Greek island, but blasted the hotel's dining options, insisting 'there was no food we could eat and we couldn't have anything to drink.' On the first morning, she recalled being offered 'toast, a hard boiled egg or something in sauce. There was no bacon,' while the following day's breakfast was 'mozzarella and sliced tomatoes,' and 'no hot bacon or sausage.' She added: 'There was fish, sardines and rice - I was sick to death of looking at rice. One night there was a Greek night and they had kebabs, I couldn't eat that. It's the worst holiday I've ever been on.' In her TripAdvisor review, the grandmother vowed to 'never visit Greece again,' and urged English visitors to 'stay away' from the hotel unless they preferred to eat 'tomatoes and olives.' The Lido Corfu Sun Hotel has dismissed Ms Edwards' claims as 'inaccurate' and 'exaggerated' - but a number of loyal guests have since clapped back at 'old crows' and 'entitled' holidaymakers who have left negative reviews concerning food. On TripAdvisor, one guest wrote: 'Don't listen to pathetic chavvy Brits and Poles who bought the cheapest "All Inclusive" package in existence and demanded type of service only the most entitled and uncouth would. 'It's a fine, charming little place. Close to water, nice food and clean facilities. Thankfully, no British food!' Another regular praised the hotel's 'clean' environment and 'fantastic' staff, along with the restaurant's 'authentic Greek' food. Taking aim at what appeared to be Susan's review, they quipped: 'This is Greece not Newcastle upon Tyne. 'There was Scottish food and it was delicious, but oh those Greeks they know how to make Greek food, could you imagine, going to Greece and there was no Greek food, wow! 'Even when old crows complain "There's no beans on Warburtons toast" "It's not authentic English" the staff smile and go out of their way to do anything they can to help. It's a shame the compo hunters descended.' One Scottish holidaymaker left a hilarious tongue-in-cheek review, writing: 'Excellent all inclusive food and drink package, they really go out their way to cater for Scottish visitors. 'We enjoyed draught Tennant's lager, Irn Bru was on tap (diet and full fat), square sausage on a roll at breakfast, scotch pies and bridies at lunchtime, and there was always a choice of haggis or mince 'n tatties at dinner.' They added: 'Tunnock's tea cakes and shortbread were available all day, along with Scottish Blend tea. The Greek dishes are also immense, which is a bonus, as Corfu is in Greece.' The hotel said: 'Our buffet is rich and diverse every single day, offering fresh salads, fruits, vegetables, cold and hot dishes that meet a variety of European and Mediterranean tastes. The idea that we served "only rice and sardines" is false. 'From the very first day of her arrival, it was evident that the guest was looking for excuses. She even complained about the weather, among other irrelevant matters.

It's a fine, charming little place. Close to water, nice food and clean facilities. Thankfully, no British food!" They, seemingly tongue in cheek, praised the offerings for Scottish guests in the critique, left hours after Ms Edwards' story emerged. The tourist wrote: "Phenomenal hotel, very comfortable and well located for a relaxing holiday, we are regular visitors. Excellent all inclusive food and drink package, they really go out their way to cater for Scottish visitors. "We enjoyed draught Tennant's lager, Irn Bru was on tap (diet and full fat), square sausage on a roll at breakfast, scotch pies and bridies at lunchtime, and there was always a choice of haggis or mince 'n tatties at dinner. Tunnock's tea cakes and shortbread were available all day, along with Scottish Blend tea. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you. The Greek dishes are also immense, which is a bonus, as Corfu is in Greece." And the majority of guests on Google Reviews rated Lido Corfu Sun Hotel as five stars out of five. Plenty of these top reviews have been published in the last few days in the wake of the criticism. One reads: "The food is delicious. The service is great. We arrived at 4am and at 8am we got a room and wristbands and we could use everything. On the day of departure after adding the key to the transfer itself we could use all the facilities and food. We sincerely recommend." It jars hugely with Ms Edwards' experience as the gran, from Westerhope, Newcastle, said her holiday was "horrendous" from the minute she, her two cousins, her second cousin and her daughter arrived. TUI offered the guests £100 in holiday vouchers, with a spokesperson saying they were "sorry to hear" about her experience. They said: "Our priority is to ensure customers have the best possible holiday experience, so we are sorry to hear that Ms Edwards felt dissatisfied with her holiday.
